From the presidents . . .

It is an honor, as president of Ohio Chapter 6, to welcome International Harvester enthusiasts from around the world to northwest Ohio for the 24th Annual Red Power Round-up. Dale Merkle and Doug Etzkorn plus their various committees have planned long and hard for this event, to enhance your personal enjoyment. We realize that not everything will be perfect, but the members working on this event have put in tremendous hours to get it as near that as possible. The details needing attention are not realized until a show of this magnitude is taken on. To enhance our show, I encourage all vendors and exhibitors to stay on Saturday until all scheduled events are completed. We do not want to short-change those who can only attend the event on the weekend. We hope this round-up of the red meets the goal to promote the collecting and preservation of International Harvester products for future generations and that attendees leave with a positive experience. Again, Chapter 6 welcomes you to the 24th Annual Red Power Round-up. Keep collecting. This year here in Lima, Ohio will be the 24th Red Power Round Up. The Ohio Chapter #6 are the hosts this year. I want to thank all of their members for all of there work putting on this event. This show is the result of many hours of work and planning that went on prior to the Round Up. It is the work of dedicated International Harvester Collectors Club members that make the Red Power Roundup one of the best and largest show anywhere. If you get a chance thank the members and their help for a great Round Up. In addition to the hosts we need to thank all of our great vendors and exbibitors who have spent a lot of time and expense to bring their displays and merchandise for everyone to see. Without the vendors and exhibitors there could not be a great show. I look forward to seeing and meeting many fellow International Harvester enthusiasts and having a enjoyable time here in Lima. Tom Harp
Tom and his wife Mary live in south-central Ohio (Ross Co.) between Chillicothe and Circleville. They have two children JT Harp, BSci, MBA, Milford, Michigan and Dr. Mary Beth Harp-Albright, Phd., Willard, Ohio. They have four grandchildren, Thomas Harp, Lance Harp, Lauren Albright, and Luke Albright. Tom is a former agriculture education instructor and FFA advisor having retired as a vocational school supervisor. He continues to manage the family farm along with a rental house business, while deeply involved in International Harvester collecting. Mary formerly worked as a home economics extension educator, stay at home mom, plus is a 25-year 4-H advisor and now as a department manager for the Kroger company.

Don Williams
My name is Don Williams. My wife, Judy and I live north of Wauseon, Ohio. We raised two daughters, Jill and Tara. Jill Smith lives in Plain City, Ohio and Tara Newton lives in Defiance, Ohio. We have two grandchildren, Cam and Cara Smith, who live at Plain City, Ohio. I enjoy going to RPRU events and several other shows each year. I enjoy showing my restored IH Tractors and meeting people. I am serving my second year as a director and first year as secretary of Ohio Chapter #6 IH Collectors Club. On behalf of Ohio Chapter #6, I hope everyone attending our RPRU here in 2013 Lima, enjoys our club members efforts to put on a great show.

Dale Merkle
I became interested in International Harvester as a boy living the first couple of years of my life on my Grandparents farm. Both Grandparents farmed with International Harvester. My Grandfather Wittee worked at the Scout plant in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. We also had International Travelalls. My brothers and I would fight to see who could get the back seat. I became involved with International Harvester Collectors in 2003. Oddly enough, it was not with Chapter 6. I was one of the charter members of Chapter 34 (Cub Cadets). I joined Chapter 6 in 2005 and became involved with Chapter 6 when they were planning Red Power Round Up 2006. Needless to say I helped in the Cub Cadet area of Red Power 2006. In 2008, I was elected to Director and Vice President of the Chapter and still hold those positions. I chaired the Red Power Round Up site selection committee and am currently Co-Chairing Red Power Round Up 2013. Ive been married to a wonderful gal who has put up with my tractor fixation for 31 years. Lisa and I have a daughter, Lora Dirmeyer (Rick) and a son, Steven Merkle (our own certified Kohler tech). We have 2 grandkids Ethyn and Brielle. I have been a machinist at Aeroquip for 36 years. I own 8 IH Cub Cadets plus various attachments and miscellaneous parts which according to my wife is too much stuff!! I rebuild engines, clutches and transmissions for the old Cub Cadets.

Dennis Wilson
I have always been interested in local history. I was born and raised about 15 minutes from the International Harvester Truck Plant in Springfield, Ohio which is a large part of that areas history. I moved into the old homestead in 1985 and became the 5th generation there. My grandfather had a portable hammer mill powered by a V-8 engine that he used to custom grind for area farmers in the mid to late 1930s. I pulled the mill and engine from the back of the shed and restored them. I needed a truck to mount them on and thought, what could be better than an IH? I found a 1928, 6-Speed Special and built it to mount the mill on. The mill is operational and I demonstrate it at some tractor shows. That truck was the beginning of the Red Fever which led to the purchase of another 6-speed and a F-20 to go with it, an original 1966 1200 A Pick Up and a Cub to go with it. Last year I bought a 1978 Loadstar to drag the stuff around. Im doing restoration which I hope to have done by the RPRU. I was showing the 6-Speed grain truck at a show 10 years ago when I met a IHCC, Chapter 6 member. I joined the club at that time, and have been a director for the past 4 years.

Douglas Etzkorn
Hello, my name is Douglas Etzkorn. I am 56 years old and have collected old iron and memorabilia since I was 11 or 12 years old. At that time, it was all makes of equipment and still do. I was rraised on a small farm north of Wapakoneta, Ohio where my wife Connie and I still live. We have been married for 28 years and I work at Apple Farm Service in Botkins, Ohio. When we got married, she asked what she could collect and I told her to take over the memorabilia and she has greatly expanded our IH collection, which we both enjoy. I concentrated more on the gas engines and have a prototype of L International Harvester engine. I am charter member #503 of Ohio Chapter 6, helping form the first meeting and serving as the first vice president. I have also been involved with two other clubs including Tri-State Gas Engine and Tractor Association in Portland, Indiana serving on their board for 18 years as well as being the first president of the Buckeye Farm Antiques Inc. Wapakoneta, Ohio for seven years. Thank you for attending the Ohio Red Power Round Up 2013 and have a safe journey home.

Harold E. Dailey
Harold Dailey is just completing his first 3-yr. term on the Oh-Chpt. #6 Board of Directors. Harold is born, raised and lives in Lexington, Ohio. Born on a potato farm and his father having 2 Farmall BNs, that had to be the first tractor Harold purchased. Harold retired in 08 with over 40 years in maintenance trade. Harold is a charter member of the Buckeye Iron Will Club in Mansfield and has been a part of Ohio Chpt. #6 for about 13 years. Harold, wife Alicia and two sons show, restore and participate in farm and car shows all summer. Harolds collection includes a 1944 Farmall BN, a 1952 Super C, a 1972 International truck, and about one dozen Cub Cadets, and all have been restored. Son Matt also has the collection fever and is a member of Chapter 6. Harold and Matt were very active in the 2006 RPRU at Mansfield and look forward to 2013 RPRU at Lima, Ohio.

Don Kirts
Born in Columbus, Ohio, grew up in the Pataskala area. Attended Watkins Memorial High School and OSU College of Agriculture. Vietnam veteran. Worked in sales and parts in local IHC Dealerships. 30 years 4-H advisor and lifetime member of World Society of Shephard. Currently residing on 81 acre farm in Granville, Ohio with wife Janice. Still actively involved in Purebred Sheep production.

The Lima Area Concert Band has been providing the citizens of the Lima area with excellent band music for forty-two years. Founded in the tradition of the great John Philip sousa, it is the mission of the LACB to entertain and educate with the very best in concert band music performed by area musicians. This non-profit organization of sixty-five talented musicians, led by John Hill, performs a four-concert subscription concert series in the Veterans Memorial Civic and Convention Center as well as many concerts in surrounding communities during the summer months. The LACB is known for its stirring marches but its programs are composed of a variety of music styles including patriotic selections, Broadway tunes, big band favorites and light classics. Our goal is to provide a program that will entertain everyone in the audience.

The Rocky Mountain International Harvester Rendezvous (RMIHR) is held annually in the spectacular mountains of Colorado. Hostetler Collection
This article, Hostetler Collection is a reprint of an article from the Antique Power magazine. Loren Hostetler passed way in Aug. 2012, but his wife, Mary, continues to operate the museum. by Gene Preston To escape the rat race that we face daily in Rochester, New York, my family took a vacation to the Amish farmland in Ohio. The area around Berlin, Ohio, is a fabulous place to get acquainted with this pleasant and simple lifestyle. On the way to Grapevine House Bed & Breakfast in the nearby community of Winesburg, we passed through Millersburg, a tiny rural town surrounded by beautiful farms. As we enjoyed the view along the way, my wife Pat commented on a red-and-white Farmall Drive street sign. It marked a lane running back to a handsome farmyard with large modern structures. At the Grapevine House, our hosts, Tim and Jean Hostetler, explained that Farmall Drive is where Tims parents, Loren Restoring old tractors grew into an obsession. Soon he and his son began traveling out of state of pick up parts and purchase old tractors. They have only one ground rule tractors must be Farmall or McCormick-Deering made by the International Harvester Company. Some farmers still find it hard to comprehend that the giant farm machinery company experienced hard times during the 1980s and was eventually taken over by Tenneco. This conglomerate also owned the famous Case tractor line and renamed their line Case/IH. Recently, the company purchased New Holland, which used to be the Ford tractor farm machinery line. Inside the first of two large structures, we stopped at Lorens homey little office. I first must put this Farmall hat on so I look official in your photos, he said. Neatly stacked on shelves were all the popular antique farm tractor magazines of today along with some very nice 1/16th scale toy Farmall tractors. The wall-to-wall red that greets you in the showroom is breathtaking. Row upon row of brightly painted tractors stand ready for inspection. The erect mufflers of so many tractors resemble a forest of silver trees. Tractors are arranged according to size and model with Farmall As, Super-As, 100, 130 and 140 tractors positioned together. Each tractor has a white sign telling its year and model. Lorens sharp knowledge of these old tractors is evident. He speaks with authority and can rattle off the history of each model and what it took to restore it. The oldest tractor in the collection is a 1922 International model 8-16. It is fueled with gravity-flow kerosene, meaning the engine has no fuel pump. It is started by using a hand See HOSTETLER, page 17

and Mary Hostetler, have a huge International Harvester tractor collection. In no time at all we were back at Farmall Drive, heading for the museum. Ive seen numerous tractor collections at tractor shows and museums, but this collection so impressed me that I felt compelled to share it with old-tractor lovers everywhere. It is, in my opinion, the most perfect collection of vintage International Harvester tractors in the country. This museum is advertised by word of mouth and the only sign is that small unofficial street sign which my wife noticed. After retiring from jobs as teacher and principal in 1977, Loren thought it would be fun to restore a couple of his old tractors. It was not long before he and his son Tim were purchasing other tractors. This provided to be a fine way to spend retirement since Loren could direct his energy and time at something that brought him great enjoyment and pride.

Renaissance Truck Builder

This following article, Renaissance Truck Builder originally appeared in Vintage Truck magazine April 2008. Milt Deets passed away in May 2008. Prior to his death, Mr. Deets sold his 1/2 scale Auto Wagon to Ron and Barb Koogler, Greene County, Ohio, who continue to show the vehicle. The Auto Wagon is on display here at the Red Power Round Up 2013. By Peggy Shank Like the multi-talented people who created the first trucks, Milt Deets of Kettering, Ohio, experimented with methods of transportation from an early age. When he was 10 years old, Deets, who is now 90, turned apple crates into vehicles for other kids in his neighborhood. Growing up poor on a Nebraska ranch, Deets built his own toys often tractors and trucks and he took some to school for other children to play with. This boys love of machinery on wheels increased as he traveled through life serving in the Army, going to school, teaching in vocational school, marring, raising children. His jobs of blacksmithing as a young boy, working as a machinist in the Army, and as machine shop superintendent, welder, and vocational school instructor in civilian life added to Deetss large pool of talents. He needed them all to restore fullsize tractors or to recreate tractors and vehicles sometimes starting with nothing more than a steering wheel and to build half-scale models, such as this circa 1916 International Harvester Auto Wagon. An interest in half-scale models materialized 50 years ago, when he and his sixyear-old son attended an antique tractor show. Following the show, Deets built a half-scale Rumely OilPull that his son drove in a Kettering parade the next year. His children still have the Rumely, and it still runs. Such a testimonial indicates the quality that Deets built into his projects. Building or restoring antique models requires knowledge of welding, woodworking, electrical systems, mechanics, and engineering, according to Deets. He came by the woodworking skills naturally, he said, and he learned welding at a school. Working with fire trucks and as a machinist in the Army gave him training in mechanics and electricity as they pertain to vehicles, but his engineering skills are homemade. See RENAISSANCE, page 16

Tractor Mac by Billy Steers

Billy began using his artistic talents as a child completing pictorial diaries of his daily experiences. He furthered his endeavors in college majoring in Geography with an emphasis in Cartography at the University of Utah. At that time, he also was a regular cartoonist for the student newspaper. After serving as a pilot in the United States Air Force to include participation in the invasion of Panama and the first Gulf War, he left the active duty service and began apprenticing with a wellknown childrens book author and illustrator. This experience allowed him to learn the process of writing and illustrating childrens books. During this time he contributed to over forty titles in a variety of formats as a contracted artist. Billy introduced his first book that he wrote and illustrated in April, 1999, Tractor Mac published at the time by Golden Books as a trade book, tells the story of Sibley the work horse who feels slighted when a shiny new tractor comes and takes over his chores. Sibley and Mac overcome their differences and become the best of friends. Publishers Weekly called it a bright, spirited read aloud and after only five months the book was in second printing. Billy has continued on with several more enthralling and likeable Tractor Mac stories in the series. Children love the bright detailed illustrations and absorbing stories by Billy Steers which have become bedtime favorites. To date, there are eleven books in the series. Boedickers unique finger style playing

Jim Boedicker In this age of high tech music, its sometimes nice to know that someone can still make music the old fashioned way. Jims unique finger style guitar playing appeals to a wide range of audiences. His repertoire includes many humorous songs, occasionally some trick guitar work, standards, and serious songs that can speak to and stay with his audiences. His casual style works equally well in a large concert setting or a small intimate group, and he especially enjoys performing family venues. Forty years of guitar playing has found him performing everything from rock to country and bluegrass to gospel. He established himself as a legitimate songwriter when he won second place at The Christian Artists Music Festival in Estes Park, Colorado in 1981. Since then, he has beena ctive in jingle work and performance for local radio and television as well as production, promotion, recording, consulting, and encouraging aspiring talent. His recordings enjoy regular airplay at radio stations in the northwest Ohio area. In addition to his solo performances, you will find him in a behind the scenes position for other artists and groups. He performs routinely for numerous civic groups, corporations, fairs, festivals, and numerous church and family events throughout Ohio and neighboring states. He is utilized regularly by local Christian television and has shared the stage with some of the nations most respected gospel and country artists. Tractor facts

1924-1963 Farmalls were the largest selling row crop tractors. 1939-1952 Farmall H became the #2 selling tractor of all time in North America, over 390,000 sold. (Ford 8N was #1) 1947-1979 Farmall Cub (later International Cub) remained in production the longest. The last IH tractor, a model 5488 was built at the Rock Island Illinois Farmall Works Plant on May 14, 1985. In 1951 the US Army through the Springfield Armory H contracted International Harvester to produce M1 Garand Rifles. And from 1953 to 1956 produced 337,623 rifles

in total, according to the Army Ordinance Department. International Harvester produced home appliances. The IH appliance division was originally developed to manufacture commercial grade items to the farmer, most of whom had just received electricity. Among these items were milk coolers and walk-in freezers. Later IH made kitchen refrigerators available in the latest designer styles. These products were introduced in 1947 and sold for less than 10 years. The refrigerator division was sold to Whirlpool Corporation in 1955.

Raffle Tractor Red Power Round Up 2013 Cub Cadet 123

IHC-6 has several members from Pennsylvania. One group wanted to make a contribution to the Red Power Round Up, so they took on the project of restoring a Cub Cadet 123, the first model with hydrostatic drive. There were several members involved in the project, Larry Wilson, Richard Purdy, Dave Beck, Tom Kennedy and Tom Beck. Tom Beck can be described as the man in regard to the Cub Cadet 123 raffle trctor. Tom was instrumental in securing the project, hosting the restoration in his shop, providing the up-front money and putting in the most hours getting the Cadet back to its former beauty. The groups efforts have paid off and the results are on display here at the Round Up. Take the opportunity to stop in and see the Cadet and tell those responsible good job. And if you are so inclined, get a raffle ticket on the Cadet.

A lot of trial and error went into the models, whether they were full- or half-size. He made the parts he needed, and if one didnt work, he reconfigured it and made it again. The individual parts were never much of a problem, he said, but finding the right engine was paramount in each project. The 1916 Auto Wagon is powered by a modern 8hp Briggs and Stratton engine. International Harvester slung the engine and transmission under the floor of its Auto Buggy and Auto Wagon, and they were attached transversely (as are most frontwheel-drive models today). These models were unofficially called High Wheelers because of their tall wheels, which kept the engine and working parts elevated above the dirt roadways and muck that appeared with every cloudburst. Deets Auto Wagon is identically configured. It does not have fenders, which were offered on the Auto Buggy, but not the Auto Wagon. He built the wheels for every one of his riding, working models, except the Auto Wagon, which has buggy wheels made by an Amish wheelwright. Deets decided to make the half-scale Auto Wagon following a tour of the International Truck and Engine Corp.s Springfield, Ohio, plant. He obtained a brochure about the wagon and started researching it. The Auto Wagons transmission, gear reduction differential, and brakes came from a John Deere garden tractor. Deets turned the rims for the headlights on his lathe using hardwood from trees that grew

on his property. Old fire extinguishers supplied the brass cups. Deets also made some of the tools necessary to produce his models. One of his engineering feats is a metalizing machine that he designed and built from scratch. It has turntables, vertical feeders, automatic stops, and other features necessary to fabricate parts. He has used this particular piece of equipment for 30 years, and it is still working. Success does not occur without a lot of hard work, and Deets did not hesitate to give his projects the time and energy they required. He would finish one of his models in about a year, often working on them six to eight hours a night. In all, Deets made 18 half-scale tractors, trucks, and cars and restored as many full-size tractors.

crank. The steel wheels were converted to rubber. It has no starter or lights. The newest tractor in the museum is a huge Farmall 856 diesel with dual wheels built in the late 1960s. Hostetlers experience as a teacher trained him to be a public speaker and his lectures about the history of his tractor collection are interesting even to those not familiar with farming and farm machinery. He explains how many of these tractors looked before they were repaired and repainted. Many times these old tractors have been robbed of fenders, lights, toolboxes, seats, battery boxes, name tags, wheel weights, and anything else that could be unbolted and replacing them is a challenge, Loren said. The tractors are dismantled and revived in a large basement shop where bags of sand are piled high. The sand is used with a sandblaster to clean old tractor metal in preparation for priming and painting. The floor was covered with red sand from sandblasting tractor parts.

It was complete in every way and made Loren smile as he drove it into the sunshine. Loren has also restored a two-row corn planter. Painted in its original colors of red, white and blue, the corn planter looks as if it has just been taken off a dealers delivery truck. One of the Farmall BN models on display has been modified to have two seats on it instead of one, which provides a comfortable place for Mary to ride when she wants to accompany Loren. The down-home hospitality and personal stories make this museum unforgettable. Walking between the rows featuring the models of 350, 400, 240, Super-M, BN, F-14, F-30, Regular, 460, and 560 reminded me of being in the Baseball Hall of Fame. All were heavy hitters, all were famous, and all grassroots Americana. Today the Hostetler collection represents
