The Love for the Game

Jacob Klionsky September 28, 2012 English 6 Weekly Writing 3

Feet slouched out on our couch and eyes staring at the TV. It was game day, and my dad couldnt be more focused on something than on the TV. He was wearing his favorite Quiksilver t-shirt, Oakley glasses, a Whistling Straits Golf Course hat, and a pair of checkered golf shorts. My dad used to be a huge Reds fan but since moving to San Francisco he has grown to love the Giants. It was October 23rd, 2010 Giants vs. Phillies game 6. The Giants were leading the Phillies 3 games to 2 and if the Giants won they would make it to the World Series. Come on Juan, you got this just get a single thats all we need, my dad said to the TV. Juan Uribe was up in the top of the eighth inning and two outs. Strike One! The umpire yelled as the ball zoomed by Juan. Come on Uribe smoke it, my dad yelled. Right that second Uribe did smoke it and the whole room went silent, we all watched the ball fly at what seemed to be one thousand miles per hour. The silence broke when we heard the Joe Buck (the announcer) yell. Its high, its deep and that ball is out of here! The Giants did it; they regained the lead and were now six outs away from winning the pennant. One out away my dad yelled. It was now the bottom of the ninth inning and there were two outs. Brian Wilson, the Giants elite closer, was pitching against Ryan Howard, the best hitter on the Phillies, and one of the most feared players in the league. Zzzzip the ball flew by Howard for strike one. Then the next pitch was way outside but was an impressive 99 mph. Come on B-Weezy, strike him out My dad yelled fearful of the Giants losing. The pitch went way to the right as Buster Posey dove to catch it. I looked over to my dad to see what he would say now and the only thing I heard or saw was his face, and it was clearly disgusted. The count was now 2-1 and Brian Wilson got set and

began his throwing motion. Zzzzip the ball flew threw the air and into Buster Poseys glove and a past Ryan Howards bat. Thats a swing and a miss I heard Joe Buck say almost simultaneously to when the ball hit Busters glove. Yes, Finally! My dad said after seeing Ryan Howard miss. The next pitch came and it wasnt as perfect because it nipped the outside of the strike zone. My dad and I both waited impatiently to see what the umpire called. Ball three, the umpire called, I groaned because it now would be a dreadful 3-2 count. Oh, come on. Get some eyes ump! My dad complained and was very annoyed. Brian Wilson stood on the mound and looked at Buster Posey for what seemed to be a lifetime. He set up and then finally threw the pitch, my dad and I could both tell that the pitch would be low and outside from the start. It seemed like that all the way to right before Buster caught the ball it somehow tailed left into the bottom corner of the strike zone. I took me awhile to process it but my dad yelled it out first, Yesssssss! We did it, were going back to the Word Series! Almost as if it was a symphony of yelling we heard Joe Buck yell, Strike three! Congratulations to the San Francisco Giants you have made it to the World Series! Finally it was my turn to yell in celebration, but I was still processing that my long loved Giants made it back to the World Series for the first time since 2002. I jumped from my chair ran out the door and yelled into my neighborhood. The Giants did it! Thank you soooo much Juan Uribe and Brian Wilson! Yessssssssss! My dad loves many things, but I think watching the Giants game with me is by far his favorite.
