Chairmans Award among Charger robotics highlights

Team summarizes honors to School Board
The Hamilton robotics team filled the Hamilton High School IMC room June 4 as part of a formal recognition at the School Board meeting. There are more than 70 members on the robotics team, which is formally called Charger Robotics Team 537. During the teams most recent season, Charger Robotics earned the Chairmans Award at the Lake Superior Regional and qualified for the FIRST Championship. Advisor Lori Hinytz explained the Chairmans Award is the highest honor a team can receive and is bigger than robot winning a competition. It celebrates the whole team from inception to the current members, Hinytz said. Hinytz later introduced adult mentors for the program. Team leader Alyssa Rebensburg, a four-year team member, explained there are 73 student members on the team. She added that 88 percent of the teams alumni have pursued careers in science and technology. According to Rebensburg, more than 55 companies provided sponsor support this past season and the program has served as a mentor for 13 other high school teams. During the programs history, Rebensburg said Charger robotics honors have included three regional Chairmans Awards, three Engineering Inspiration Awards, three Judges Awards, two Gracious Professionalism Awards, eight Entrepreneurship Awards and a Rockwell Innovation and Control Award.

Over the summer, the program will be participating in 26 fund raising or community outreach events. Winning chairmans helps show that what we do isnt for nothing and you can get a reward for doing something, Rebensburg said. She further explained that early in the season a display case was constructed in the Robotics garage to show the awards that have been won. Previously, many of the awards were packed away because there wasnt the room to show them in public. All we want is for others to be proud of what we have achieved over the years, Rebensburg said. She said that being allowed to display the trophies will allow the program to feel more connected to the school while allowing other students to be exposed to the program. By Thomas J. Falls HS senior honored for outstanding community service

BY NIKKI ACKERMAN STAFF WRITER
Recently recognized for her notable service to the community, Menomonee Falls High School senior Julie Schweiss is the kind of young woman who is constantly putting others firstoften to the point of overextending herself. Sometimes I take on too many causes, she admitted. Something will touch my heart and I just have to get involved. One of her most near and dear projectsplaying a key role in the organization of her high schools American Cancer Society Relay for Life eventis what brought her statewide attention earlier this year. In March, the 18-year-old was honored as one of just five Distinguished Finalists in Wisconsin by the 2013 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program, the countrys largest youth recognition program based exclusively on volunteer community service, for helping to raise nearly $20,000 by co-chairing (with classmate Alexa Morgan) a school team for the charity walk. Schweiss learned of the honor via a cell phone call from her principal Corey Golla. I was like, Why is the principal calling me? Am I in trouble? she recalled with a laugh. Then I found out about the award and I was really excited and felt so honored. It was pretty awesome. Through the high schools Key Club, Schweiss has been involved in the Relay for Life for several yearsstarting with the community-wide event and then helping with the formation of a school-specific version of the walkand last year, under her tenure, the school event went from 200 to 400 participants and from $7,500 raised to the impressive total of more than twice that amount. This new standard was achieved by setting higher goals, working harder than ever before and just being really ambitious, the teen said. We set a goal of $10,000 and we ended up surpassing it by $10,000. Calling her co-chair integral to the Relays success, Schweiss said she and Morgan and the rest of their 15-member crew made it their mission to go above and beyond where we had ever been before. Through various committees, the students raised money and awareness through the traditionalbake sales, a rummage sale and a car washand the unique. We did something called Stop the Bop for which students had to pay to get an annoying song to stop playing as they walked through the hallways between class time, Schweiss explained. It was something fun and different and it got word out about the Relay at the same time. The actual event went as well as she could have hoped, said Schweiss, noting that along with the actual relay, the day included a wide variety of activities such as Zumba, a rock-climbing wall, field games and a dunk tank. It was great, she said. We did not expect a turn out as huge as it was. It was so cool getting the community and high schoolers together for such an amazing cause, for an issue that affects everyone. Raised in the village by her parents, Jonathan and Christy (she also has a 16year-old sister, Jill), Schweisswho is sixth in her class academicallyflourishes in a variety of other areas as well. She is also a member of Student Council, the number two singles player on her schools Varsity tennis team, and involved in numerous waysas a choir member, lector, youth group participant, Vacation Bible School helper and mentorat Holy Cross Lutheran Church in the village. "Words cannot express how proud I am of Julie, said Christy Schweiss of her daughter. Her strong work ethic, kindness, and generosity towards others will open many doors for her in the future. As she gets ready to pursue a physical therapy degree at Carroll University this fall, Schweiss has confidence that the qualities mentioned by her mother will carry her into a bright future of doing what she loves mosthelping people. When I set goals for myself, I really strive for them, she said. I always want to see how I can use my talents and passions to make a difference for others.

This years Menomonee Falls High School Relay for Life honorary speaker Pat Greco (center) leads the Survivor Lap with last years honorary speaker and this years emcee, Bill Jackson (at right). Menomonee Falls High School's Relay for Life raised $19,500 and counting for the American Cancer Society May 31. Donations are still being accepted. This years honorary speaker and cancer survivor Bill Jackson served as host for the evening, and district Superintendent Dr. Patricia Greco served as this year's speaker, providing her moving story of beating breast cancer. Activities at the event included playing Save Princess Peach, large-scale Angry Birds and Jenga, and a large game of Twister. Photo courtesy of the School District of Menomonee Falls.

State Division I softball quarterfinal

Late run lifts Point past Germantown

BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR Stevens Point reversed the result against Germantown June 6, rallying to beat the Warhawks in a state quarterfinal a year after being on the losing side of a Germantown win. I think we were a little bit bitter from last year, coming into the state tournament and losing the first game against Germantown right away. We had to get it back this time, Stevens Point outfielder Heather Woyak said afterward. The Panthers won in an eight-inning game 3-2 as Kylie Hodgson score from second base on a error. Hodgson was inserted as the courtesy runner after Taylor Smola singled. Hodgson then advanced on a bunt sacrifice. Unfortunately for us Point caught a break and it hurt, Germantown Coach Kurt Raguse said afterward. They (Point) caught one more break than we did, and thats the bottom line. The teams were tied for three innings after the Panthers scored one run to make the score 2-2. Soik singled, stole stole second, and scored on a single by Megan Roth. Germantown had opportunities to take the lead, but left two runners on base in the fifth inning and one runner on base in the seventh and eighth innings. Its missed opportunities. It was kind of unusual for us, we didnt miss a lot of them this year, Raguse said. When we needed them, we usually came through. Stevens Point opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning as Smola scored, allowing Carly Lass to score from second. Germantown tied the score in the second inning as Becky Soderberg singled, allowing Alex Bechler to score from second base. The Warhawks took the lead in the third inning as Bechler singled, allowing Felicia Kons to score from second base. Both of Germantowns runs came with two outs, and Raguse said noted his team has been in it all year, they dont quit. At no time do they quit theyre not worried about two outs or no outs, they just know theyre up there to do a job and get it done. For the most part all year, they have. Germantown closed the door on several opportunities by Stevens Point to break the game open, as pitcher Amanda Witzlib recorded five strikeouts to end innings while recording 13 strikeouts over seven-plus innings. Both pitchers did a great job of that today (ending innings on strikeouts). There were opportunities on both sides to blow this open and pitchers walked away with big strikeouts, Raguse said. Amanda was phenomenal, best Ive seen her all year. The loss ended the second consecutive tournament appearance for Germantown. Raguse said he hoped the younger players paid attention to the play of the seniors in getting to the tournament. This is something we want to do year in and year out, this is our goal, we want to be back here every year, Raguse said. Now whether it happens or doesnt happens that may be another thing this is our goal.

Menomonee Falls Maddie Eikenmeyer slides safely into third base after uncorking a triple to right center in the top of the ninth inning of Falls 1-0 victory over Appleton East in the Division 1 quarterfinal softball game at Goodman Field in Madison. Eikenmeyer later scored the only run of the game on an errant pickoff throw. Photo courtesy of School District of Menomonee Falls.

Falls rallies for 1-0 win over Appleton East

Menomonee Falls won its first state softball tournament game June 6, as the Indians scored in the top of the ninth inning to beat Appleton East 1-0. With one out in the top of the ninth inning, Maddie Eikenmeyer tripled and then scored on a failed pickoff attempt. With one out in the bottom of the ninth inning, Easts Lauren Blasczyk singled to right field. Monica Guerrero then entered the game as a pinch runner for Blasczyk. But Menomonee Falls pitcher Kelly Berglund got the next East batter to hit a pop out to shortstop Clare Mohrfeld, who then threw to first base to complete the double play. Berglund allowed only two hits while recording eight strikeouts for Menomonee Falls, who advanced to state semifinal matchup against Westosha Central the next day. For Express News coverage on the state tournament, go to www.discoverhometown.com. Menomonee Falls is making its third state tournament appearance, having previously qualified for state in 2003 and 2009, losing in the quarterfinals both times. The Indians booked their trip to the state tournament with a 4-1 sectional final win over Watertown June 1.

Celebrating 25 Years of Soccer!

Germantown advanced in the Division I girls soccer playoffs with a 1-0 win at Menomonee Falls June 1. Germantown's goal came in the second half. With the win, Germantown advanced to a June 8 sectional final against North Shore Conference rival Cedarburg at Whitefish Bay. June 2 regional results: Menomonee Falls girls soccer jumped out to an early lead against Nicolet and kept the pressure up throughout the game to win the Division I regional final June 1, 3-0. Rachel Clayton got Menomonee Falls on the board at the 17th minute, sprinting past the Nicolet defense to convert a breakaway goal. Two minutes later Menomonee Falls

goalkeeper Kayla Heagney made a save to retain the Menomonee Falls lead. Jessie Barczak then scored from close range at the 23rd minute to give Menomonee Falls a 2-0 lead. Menomonee Falls kept possession on the Nicolet side of the field for most of the second half, but Heagney was pressed into making a save at the 62nd minute. Clayton then scored her second goal at the 75th minute. Two first half goals were enough for Germantown against Hamilton earlier in the day, as the Warhawks won 2-0. Germantown's goals came from Maddie Tetzke and Paige Blankenheim.

Juneteenth Day began in Texas

Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19, is the name given to emancipation day by African-Americans in Texas. On that day in 1865 Union Major-General Gordon Granger read General Orders, No.3 to the people of Galveston. It stated: "The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor. The freedmen are advised to remain quietly at their present homes and work for wages." Large celebrations on June 19 began in 1866 and continued regularly into the early 20th century. The AfricanAmericans treated this day like the Fourth of July and the celebrations contained similar events. In the early days, the celebration included a prayer service, speakKELLY SPRINGFIELD MICHELIN BRIDGESTONE FIRESTONE

ers with inspirational messages, reading of the emancipation proclamation, stories from former slaves, food, red soda water, games, rodeos and dances. The celebration of June 19 as emancipation day spread from Texas to the neighboring states of Louisiana, Arkansas and Oklahoma. It has also appeared in Alabama, Florida, and California as African-American Texans migrated. Celebration of Juneteenth declined during World War II but revived in 1950 at the Texas State Fair Grounds in Dallas. Interest and participation fell away during the late 1950's and 1960's as attention focused on expansion of freedom for African-Americans. In the 1970's Juneteenth revived in some communities. For example, in Austin the Juneteenth celebration returned in 1976 after a 25 year hiatus. The preceding information was taken form the Texas State Library and Archives Commission Web site.
