Midterm test- Nov./08/2012 Note: Finish the given questions within 80 minutes Student name:

Problem#1 (26 points): Point A is on the part (rectangular block) shown in figure below. Point A has a coordinate of (5, 5, 0). a) The part goes through the following set of transformation in the order shown below: a. 90 rotation clock wise about the X axis b. 90 rotation counter clock wise about the Z axis c. Translation along the vector (1,1,1) What is the final coordinate of point A after these translations?

A: (5, 5, 0)

B: (1, 1, 0)

b) The original part shown in the figure above is rotated 90 CCW about an axis which is parallel to the X axis and passes through point B. Then the part is transformed 5 units along the Z axis. If after these two transformations a point on the part has a final coordinate equal to (2, 0, 1), what is the original coordinate of this point before the transformation?

Problem#2 (30 points): Write a part program to mill the age of the part shown below. The dimensions are in millimeter. The bottom face of the part as well as the initial condition of the bottom face of the cutting tool has a Z coordinate of zero. The feed rate of machining is 350 mm/minute. The traverse feed rate is 950 mm/minute. The spindle rate is 717 rpm. The start point of the cutting tool is shown in figure below. The tool has already been loaded and is ready to cut the edge of the part at the location shown below. G91: Incremental dimension, G90: Absolute dimension, G71: Select metric, G01: Linear interpolation, G02: Circular interpolation, M08: Coolant on, M03: Spindle Clockwise, F: Feed rate, S: spindle rate, M02: End of program and stops everything G02 X Y I J: X and Y specify the end point of the arc with respect to the start point of the cutting tool. I and J specify the center of the arc with respect to the previous point of the cutting tool.

Problem#3 (23 points): A hole is tight fitted to a shaft. If the hole has a nominal value of 6 what are the dimension range for the hole and the shaft.

Problem#4 (21 points): Which of the following is True or flase: a) The resonance frequency of a part is independent from external loads b) By changing the boundary condition of a part the resonance frequency of the part will change c) Every continous part has infinite number of resonance frequencies For the folloing beam shown in figure below: d) If under buckling analysis the BLF is less than one then the beam will not buckle. e) If under buckling analysis the BLF is greater than 1 then it can be always concluded that there is a point in the beam where the Von-Mises stress is greater than the yield strength f) If under static stress analysis the maximum Von-Mises stress on the part is greater than the yeild stress then we can conclude that the BLF is less than one. g) For analysisng the static stress of an an assembly, all the parts should be bonded together using component contact or contact set.
