"I was really excited to learn how to really use Flash or Dreamweaver. But all we did in class was discuss different websites. We did build a blog/package that was enjoyable. But the class
was not what I expected."

"Give us more hands on assignments."

"Not much! This course was a great introduction to online news."

"I think another entire-class project would be fun."

"Teach something more than what we learned in JR200. I don't feel I was challenged at all. I learned nothing new from the course. Everything I did learn, I had to figure out on my won. But
isn't that what the course is supposed to do?"

11. What aspects of this instructor's teaching did you find most beneficial?
"All of the editing was the best part by far -- it's important to know how to produce clean copy."

"She's a good instructor that doesn't talk down to her students. She has a sense of humor and her power point presentations are always very informative. She also knows a lot about
technology and was very skilled at all the programs we learned how to do this semester."

"Organized approach, hands-on engagement, accessibility, power points."

"Willing to patiently explain things that weren't clear."

"Very hands on, great real-world experience."

"I learned the most when Michelle would conduct step-by-step class excercises using InDesign or Dreamweaver. She would always do the assignment with us, so she could help us
whenever we asked."

"She has lots of experience, is very friendly and explains things very clearly. She is easy to talk to and very reasonable with her expectations. I like her style!"

"Everything about the course was amazing! This was the best class I took at Emerson and taught me the most!"

"Michelle Johnson knows the industry inside and out. She is experience in the field of journalism and online journalism and it shows in her teaching. This helps her students understand

material better. She is also a interesting person who is always willing to show her students individual attention."

"i've had michelle so many times i've become used to the slideshows, which she does an awesome job with."

12. Please offer any suggestions about what the instructor could do to enhance the instruction in this course.
"I think we could spend a bit more time working with some of the newer systems that are being implemented in the newsroom."

"Don't teach DreamWeaver and give more in class time to work on the final project so that the class can have you there to assist if they have questions."

"I really enjoyed having Michelle Johnson as a professor and cannot think of any areas for improvement at the present time."

"One of the best journalism professors I've had at Emerson!"

"I think the course was taught well, no need for any big changes."

"Sometimes Powerpoints can be a little boring, but honestly, they are the most effective way to teach a lot of the material. But perhaps finding some other teaching methods once in a while
would be nice just for a little variety."

"Nothing, the class was great as was the professor!"

"i think she's doing pretty well."

13. Please use this space for additional comments on your experiences with this instructor.
"None"

"I look forward to taking additional classes with Michelle Johnson in the future."

"Michelle is one of the most effective professors I've ever had, and I enjoyed her class a lot. She was always more than willing to talk and help outside of class if anyone asked."

"I've had her for a few classes and I always like her."

"She is awesome and one of the best teachers at Emerson College. She taught the course with great activities and pushed her students to learn in realistic manners. One of the best classes at
Emerson and taught me useful information that I will use throughout my career. Michelle Johnson is a superstar who understands her students and can easily connect with them."

14. Please use the space below for additional comments about this course.
"Overall, I enjoyed the class. I prefered the layout aspects to the copy editing parts. The final project was extremley time consuming. It was frusturating to have to use school computers and
thus work around the schedules of the labs. The Election Day excercise, mock newsroom simulations and were also enjoyable."

"DreamWeaver should not be used anymore since most newsrooms don't use it."

"Good course. I enjoyed taking it."

"This is a very useful course, but Michelle mentioned that Dreamweaver is no longer used by any Web sites. I don't think it was necessary for us to use classtime to learn it if no employer is
ever going to care whether or not we're familiar with an out-of-date program."

11. What aspects of this instructor's teaching did you find most beneficial?
"The skills she teaches are aided heavily by the handouts passed out in class. I refer to these all the time so that I can easily get work done."

"The course was well-organized and informative. Michelle Johnson really knows the material and is able to communicate concepts effectivley and interestingly. She is very accessible and
answers all questions in a timely manner."

"Her presentations were clear and concise. I really enjoyed her use of multimedia because it was all relevant to the class."

"web labs"

"I thought it was great that she would get excited about what she was teaching us. It rubs off when someone has fun teaching you something that could be potentially boring."

"Her hands on approach to teaching Flash, Dreamweaver and other computer programs."

"The ethics briefings were very helpful as they helped us to practice what we would do in a real news room. The labs and final project were also very helpful in learning how to use such
programs as flash, moviemaker, and dreamweaver to create interactive media."

"Easy communication."

"The Ethics Briefings. The power point presentations summarizing the chapters we read. The online readings she made us read were well chosen as well as the clips we saw."

"Michelle is a very geuninely nice person, making her class enjoyable."

"I thought this was easily one of my more favorite courses so far at Emerson. You did a great job with the class, and I thought the final project was a perfect summation of everything we
learned."

"Designing the a webpage, learning the rules of news ethics, and learning the different multi-media technology."

"Very organized. The power points were very effective."

12. Please offer any suggestions about what the instructor could do to enhance the instruction in this course.
"Make the worksheets less general. Help bring other, newer ideas about the software to students minds."

"I really enjoyed having Michelle Johnson as a professor. She is best professor within the journalism department that I have had thus far."

"Can't really think of anything..."

"I think the prof should try not to trick us so much on quizzes and tests. It's mean because the answers all seem correct no matter what they are. She could also teach us how to set up the web
stuff and flash stuff on our own because we wont be able to create our own templates since she provided us templates."

"Professor Johnson was very helpful in understand the course, however, I think the set up on the labs is not beneficial. We learn quickly how to use one program and are swthced around so
much with no time to practice the programs that it is extremely difficult to complete the final project. I think that if the labs were set up some other way where students got to work with the
programs longer it would be more beneficial."

"Make class discussions more interesting."

"Nothing. She's very organized and the class is awesome!"

"More discussion of reading."

"I think there needs to be more of an emphasis on the web portion of the class."

"Nothing really, I thought you did a great job with the entire thing, especially the final project. Everything was so clearly and concisely presented, you did your best to help us succeed in any
way possible. Thank you so much again."

"Professor Johnson was always available when I needed her. She was very helpful when I didn't understand how to put the pieces together for my web project. She was respect,
knowledgable about the subject matter and allowed us to use our imagination and think critically. I am glad that I had her as a professor my first semester at Emerson."

"Nothing it was the perfect balance of hands on and lecture."

13. Please use this space for additional comments on your experiences with this instructor.

"I would reccommend her classes to anyone. I enjoyed having her as a professor."

"Overall, just a positive, easy experience!"

"It was helpful to learn about flash and dreamweaver. I just want to learn how to do this stuff from scratch than from a template."

"She was really knowleadgeable about the subject. She answered questions very well. I liked having her as my professor this semester."

"She was great."

14. Please use the space below for additional comments about this course.
"GET A NEW VIDEO PROFESSOR OR AT LEAST WATCH HER "TEACHING" OCCUR!"

"The video portion of the class was one of the most time-consuming and frusturating parts of the course for me. It is a very lengthy and time-consuming process to get on-campus film access.
As a school that is devoted to subjects such as Film and Journalism and is a school of communications and the arts, one would think that the college would be more accomodating. I also was
frusturated with having to use programs that were only avaliable on school computers meaning that I had to find times that the newsroom and 638 were open and avaliable and fit inside my
schedule. The computer labs are always booked, except for late at night and early in the morning. If it is going to be required that we use very pricey programs that are only avaliable through
the school, there should be more computers avaliable. There should be a lab with programs such as Soundslides and Dreamweaver etc. that are avaliable all the time for student access. I
also strongly dislike the way that documents are saved on the computer- local workspace, desktop, 8 day public, pages- so confusing. I would think that there would be a more streamlined
and direct way to securely save documents. Building a website was also complicated and something that I found very time-consuming and frusturating."

"It was fun. It was great for convergence journalists to know how to create websites. Now I can create my own websites."

"Fun course. I liked it. I learnt a lot about computer software. I value it very much"

"Loud enough without yelling, informed enough without derailing endlessly, LIKED what she was teaching! Allowed fragments"

"The use of multiple forms of media to present the topic was incredibly useful. It broke up the monotony of a lengthy Power Point style presentation, but still presented the student with the
material. Videos were especially useful in providing a break from the Power Point presentation."

"The different movies and other media she showed."

"She was very knowledgeable about print journalism; however, she didn't provide a lot of guidance on broadcast, and most of the class was made up of broadcast journalism majors."

"the slides were very good organized, gave me the main points to know in each class"

"She was very personable and friendly. She presented each topic with clarity and gave a clear overview of how the class would be run and how the grades would be determined. It was very
beneficial that she has a lot of knowledge about the course, as she was/is on the staff of the Boston Globe. I felt that I learned a lot about journalism."

"She had a lot of experience in the field, so I felt more confident in what she was saying because she knew what she was talking about. Also, the powerpoint were very easy to follow."

"The material was straightforward and the professor did not complicate it. Her notes were easy to follow and she made sense of all the material. I enjoyed being in class."

"The lectures were very organized and timely, and this was helpful in learning about the history of journalism. The guest speakers were also very interesting and I learned alot from listening
to their experiences and opinions."

"I found the powerpoint presentations to be very helpful and the information was presented very clearly."

"I found Professor Johnsons knowledge of journalism, including her education in boston journalism, convergence and the way that we as journalism students need to change the profession."

"Prof. Johnson was both knowledgeable and passionate about the subject matter of this course. Her Powerpoint presentations were very effective, especially since the class was so big and a
verbal discussion may have been unsuccessful by itself. The guest speakers were also a good choice."

"I really didn't like her style of teaching, and had a hard time thinking of a beneficial aspect."

"She was an experienced journalist and wasn't only very knowledgable on the subject matter, but she was very passionate about it. She loved to bring in guest speaker's that related to what
we were learning or might inspire us to puruse a certain kind of journalism."

"I liked that she outlined everything for us on powerpoint."

"The speakers that she brought in were interesting and doing the New U online was also cool."

"Her powerpoint which accompanied her lecture was amazing. She had just the right amount of words, and they were easy to follow."

"Her powerpoints made learning very easy and I loved the additional documentaries and links to outside sources that supplemented everything that we were reading."

"her use of real life examples and her ability to show us examples of media online was very useful"

"She made powerpoint presentations that made it easy to take notes and understand the material"

"The notes went by very quickly, and therefore forced me to be engaged and pay attention.I LOVED having the guest speakers discuss their journalism experiences and provide great insight
to the history of journalism and what the current career-field is like. I gained the most knowledge from these speakers.I also enjoyed the NewsU online courses because they were hands-on
and interactive. This engaged me the most, and I wish that along with our online-postings, this was a consistent element of our course."

12. Please offer any suggestions about what the instructor could do to enhance the instruction in this course.
"Maybe a little less notes. more hands on."

"the lectures get kind of long"

"Maybe add a little more excitement. Although all the notes we take are beneficial, I spaced out many times because it can get a little boring."

"less power point."

"More activities? Although the ones we had were pretty nifty[Class was kind of easy but I don't know if I'm a wunderkind]"

"The split of the class into two distinct parts, the first being the history of journalism, the second being a focus on present day journalism, is a little problematic. The first part tends to drag
the class down. I would suggest that the instructor could incorporate more present day discussions earlier on in the course."

"More enthusiasm please! It is hard to stay interested when every class is a power point presentation. More interactive exercises would be much appreciated."

"Although many students wouldn't like it, I feel as though we could have had a few more quizzes, in order to provide more chances to boost our grades."

"I thought this course was very informative and the format was perfect."

"More videos and examples of the material."

"I would suggest doing more in class activities, instead of lecturing each class period."

"Change methods of teaching other than power points more frequently, with things that make the class more interactive."

"She could try to get to know each of her students a little better, or atleast get everyone more involved in class discussions."

"She should leave slides of her presentation on the overhead long enough for people to take notes on them, and also not speak in such a mono-tone voice in order to keep students' attention."

"less powerpoints and more discussion"

"maybe she could slow down a bit so it will be easier to take notes."

"More activities to engage us on a day to day basis, make assignments more clear."

"more discussion in class would keep it from becoming a boring lecture class."

"The instructor could have provided more study time and review. Sometimes, I felt we learned too many things at once."

"The notes went by WAY too fast, and I felt like all of the information went in one ear and out the other. I didn't feel very engaged at all, and I felt like facts were merely being spit out at me,
and much of the information wasn't very memorable. I wish we had more hands-on or engaging class-time, perhaps by having the class ask questions actively. All I did in that class was take
notes! It was SO much information that was difficult to retain. This made the final hard to study for because there were WAY too many facts to remember. If our class were more interactive
in conjuction with a consolidation of note-worthy facts, I'd be able to remember more of what was taught. There were some interactive elements of our course outside of class - the online-
postings and the NewsU online courses - which I found quite engaging. I learned a lot from the online interaction and felt that this information was the most memorable."
