Commencement Speaker

ark D. Williams received a bachelors of arts in accounting and masters of science in hospitality business at Michigan State University. During his time at MSU, he has held various positions on campus such as Resident Mentor in Rather Hall, Cultural Aide in Hubbard and Campbell Halls, A Complex Coordinator for the Office of Cultural and Academic Transition and an Assistant Hall Director in Hubbard Hall. He was very active in organizations such as Black Student Alliance and the National Association of Black Accountants. Upon completing his masters, Mark worked for Deloitte and Touche in Detroit, MI. He moved back to Lansing and began working for Auto-Owners Insurance. Mark made a career change to serve students and is currently a Community Director in Hubbard Hall at MSU. His future goal is to purse a doctorate in university administration with a focus on the retention of students of color. Mark accepted his calling to ministry on February 7, 2010 and has been a youth minister at Faith Fellowship Baptist Church for the past three years. He is also the president of the East Community Action Center which serves the needs of the community on the eastside of Lansing. He is also a campus leader for Just for Christ Campus Ministry as he tries to help students stay grounded in their relationship with Christ to help them succeed in life.

And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to [his] purpose. Romans 8:28

Shunkea Ali
Davenport University
Shunkea Ali, proud parent to Cadence and granddaughter of Fannie Hutchinson, graduated from Davenport University with an associate's in business administration and a bachelor's in finance. This fall she is returning to Davenport to begin a graduate degree in finance. Shunkea is a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success and Business Professionals of America. Her plan is to become an actuary. She gives praise to God for guiding her steps.

Amber Boyd
Holt High School
Amber Boyd, daughter of Pamela Boyd and Terrel Boyd, will attend Lansing Community College (LCC) and major in performing arts. While in high school, Amber participated in the Leadership Academy, the Holt HS Step Team, and LINKS, which assists autistic children.

Victoria Carter
Sexton High School
Victoria Carter is the daughter of Lori Carter of Lansing and Larry Carter of Jackson. Victoria will attend LCC in the fall to take her core basics, after completing them she plans to transfer to a 4-year college to study education with the hopes of one day becoming a teacher. During high school, Victoria was a cheerleader, participated in The Sisterhood, 21st Century, and was a member of the Student Court.

Jalen Hayes is the son of Denon and Myra Hayes. Jalen is attending Oakland University on basketball scholarship, but is not sure of a major yet.

Sexton High School
Jawan Hayes is the son of Denon and Myra Hayes. Jawan is attending Lansing Community College on a two-year scholarship majoring in photography.

Kamara Miller
Albion College
Kamara Miller, daughter of Charles and Liz Miller, graduated from Albion College with a bachelor of arts in theatre. Kamara's passion for arts started at a very young age beginning with Easter and Christmas productions here at Lansing COGIC. She was very active in theater at Pattengil Middle School as well as Eastern High School. During her time at Albion, she performed in many productions both on stage and behind the scenes. Her future plans are to own a theatre dedicated to producing plays for and by minorities.

Mercedes Mitchell
Waverly High School

Mercedes Mitchell is the daughter of PJ Mitchell and Theoplis Mitchell ll. Mercedes has been attending The Early College program at LCC for the past two years and next year plans to transfer to Spelman College majoring in pre-med. She wants to become an obstetrician, and with the Lord as her guide she knows nothing can stop her from achieving these goals.

Korey Parker is the son of Ed and Teresa Parker.

Okemos High School
Artrease Pope is the daughter of Marl Pope. She is will attend Lansing Community College (LCC) and then transfer to a 4-year university to study fashion design. Artrease was a cheerleader for three years and currently serves as a youth nurse at LCOGIC.

Khadijah Radcliff
Everett High School
Khadijah Radcliff, daughter of Lynn Radcliff and Tracy Radcliff, will be attending Saginaw Valley State University in the fall majoring in mechanical engineering. Her passion is bowling and hopes to become a well-known bowler one day. With Christ as the head of her life, she knows nothing is impossible.

Nathaniel Saunders
Okemos High School
Nathaniel Saunders is the son of Noland and Cheryl Saunders. Nathaniel is attending LCC to complete basic studies and plans to transfer to four-year university. He participated in marching band for the past 7 years and was awarded three medals in three ensembles. He also is SW3s reigning Young Man of Valor.

Ikea Smith
Ikea Alexis Smith, is a December 2012 graduate of the University of Texas at San Antonio, Texas. She received a bachelor of science degree in educational development and community health. Upon exiting UTSA, she received a 4.0 GPA. She is currently employed by an importing/ exporting International Management Company in San Antonio, Texas. Her future plans are to pursue a career of health and research for the state of Texas or wherever the Lord directs. Ikea is the daughter of Elder Bill and Evangelist A. Nora Smith and the younger sibling of April Smith.

Xavier V. Stewart is the son of Liberty Y. McPike. Xavier has yet to decide which college he will attend, but is considering Lansing Community College.

Sade Turner
Michigan State University
Sade Turner the daughter of the late Charese Pierce and Tracey Turner but raised by my grandmother Sandra Turner. Today, June 9th is her 22nd birthday and she graduated from MSU on May 3, 2013 with a bachelors degree in media arts technology, concentration in radio/TV with a cognate in human development family studies. Sade will continue on to pursue a second bachelors, then attend graduate school. Her biggest passion is writing poetry and working with children. She hopes to become a child therapist. 2 Cor. 5:17 says "If any man be in Christ he is made a new creature." Sade is definitely a new creature allowing God to take total control of her life, and letting Him use her daily in any way He sees fit.

Andrufus Day Watkins is the son of Melissa Angell. He will attend Lansing Community College and then transfer to Michigan State University.

Everett High School
Lexis Shavonte Wells is the daughter of Tamia Armstrong. She will attend LCC and will then transfer to the University of Toledo to study psychology. Lexis participated in the SW3 Scholastic Motivation Quiz Bowl competition, loves to dance, and is a member of the LCOGIC Soul Steppers.
