2. What makes the ink molecules separate as they move up the paper? Why do some stay lower on the paper and
some go farther up the paper?

16. There has been a case of bacterial runoff at a nearby farm. Farmer Joe claims it wasnt from any of his animals,
so the CDC investigated surrounding farms that had animals. Their investigation included a pig farm, a horse
farm, and a goat farm. They found that of the three farms, two of them had direct access to the stream that ran
through Farmer Joes land. The goat farmer says it wasnt him because he used a remote watering system
(which means they dont dispose of water directly into the stream). The horse farms bacteria streak came back
negative, but the farmers use a lot of chemical fertilizer (not manure). The pigs farmer claims that all his pigs

are healthy, but he looks a little sketchy and nervous as he tells you. Which farmer is most likely the culprit?

17. Why was it unlikely that the other two farms were causing the food poisoning?

19. Mr. Brameyers son was out playing and found a puppy on the side of the road. Because he is only 2, he brought
the puppy home and wanted to keep it. Mr. B explained that he couldnt keep the puppy because it was
probably someones pet. He put out an ad for a lost puppy, but several people tried to claim it as their own (it
was a very cute puppy). To determine who the real owner was, he asked them each to bring a sample of the
puppys hair from their home, and he ran a DNA fingerprint on the samples they provided and the hair of the
puppy. The results are shown on the gel below.

If the puppys hair is shown on the far left lane, which of the neighbors is really
the puppys owner?

20. Dr. Halperin found a strange puddle on his front porch as he walked out the door the other day. He wants to
know if it will harm the porch or not, so he tested the pH. The pH test strip he used is on the right and the key is
on the left. What was the pH of the liquid on his porch? (youll need to look at this on edline to get the color
version)
