CONSIDERATIONS: Verify Doctors order for IDC Educate Patient (What are you going to do, Why the procedure is necessary) Get Patients Consent Provide Reassurance to Patient Promote Safety and Privacy CONTRAINDICATIONS: After abdominal trauma (difficult to poke, may cause more trauma to organs) Vaginal Surgery (allow doctor to do it) EQUIPMENT: Right catheter size Sterile gloves Drainage bag and holder Bluey Catheter pack 10 mls syringe Plain NSS Sterile water Lubricant Extra gauze (for holding labia to separate when cleaning) Tape to hold catheter in the inner thigh. Procedure: 1. Check for doctors order 2. Explain to patient the procedure 3. Get patients consent. If they allowed you then prepare your equipment. 4. Make sure area is clean to get rid off debris(shower, if cannot provide face wash and bin-if they can do it. If incontinent then you do it) 5. Wash your hands 6. Check for the hospital policy 7. Position patients legs up and out. (like a frog). Provide privacy. Put your curtains around. 8. Get your equipment put in trolly make sure trolly is clean already with rubbish bag.

9. Put bluey under patients buttocks. Put the rope on the side of the bluey. 10. Put on goggles 11. Open catheter pack, Separate the contents 2 blue container and forceps out of the container. 12. Open 10 mls syringe 13. Pour water on the container with gauze and cotton. 14. Put lubricant on the side of our sterile field. 15. Put sterile gloves on arrange your equipment 16. Get blue gloves in the pack and put it on 17. Wring cottons and sponges with forceps 18. Spread blue with diamond on patients vaginal area using forceps. (white part up) 19. Put the other container on working are for urine to flow. 20. Put the sterile tissue on top of patient. 21. Open the catheter tube not the whole thing, Allow the blue for the urine to flow. 22. Wipe vagina up to down outside first 23. With the added gauze use to separate folds and clean inside. 24. Throw gauze, cottons and blue and remove blue gloves throw everything. 25. Get catheter make sure its lubricated 26. Get the other gauze use to separate. 27. Stick tube to the uretha until there is resistance. Urine will flow on the remaining plastic. (make patient breath in and out making muscles more relaxed and patient is focused on her/his breaths) 28. Get 10 mls syringe flush with prepared NSS, water or air. According to hospital policy. (green side) 29. Connect the drainage tube on the other end of the catheter. 30. Tape catheter on the inner thigh. Will not move. Allow tube to be not too tight. If no tape use the rope loop it and tie. 31. Tear the bluey with diamond. Put everything on the rubbish bag 32. Take off sterile gloves. Discard. 33. Wash your hands. 34. Assess for the patient if tolerated the procedure and comfortable. Urine is draining well. DOCUMENTATION What size of catheter you put in.
