Notice of Assessment Task Preliminary Course in Biology Date of initial notification: Task Number: One Time Allowed: Two weeks Weighting of Task: 15% 26/3/ 2013 Date of submission: 9/4/ 2013

Course component/Focus area/topic/Module: 8.3 Pattern in Nature

Outcomes/Competencies to be assessed in this task: P4 describes applications of biology which affect society or the environment P3 assesses the impact of a particular technological advances on understanding in Biology P6 explains how cell ultrastructure and the coordinated activities of cells, tissues and organs contribute to macroscopic processes in organisms P12 Discuses the validity and reliability of data gathered from first-hand investigations and secondary sources P13 identifies appropriate terminology and reporting styles to communicate information and understanding in biology

Task Description:

Part 1
Outcome: Compare open and closed circulatory systems using one vertebrate and one invertebrate as examples. a) Describe an open circulatory system using an invertebrate from your neighbourhood. (4 marks) b) Describe a closed circulatory system using a vertebrate from your neighbourhood. (4 marks)

c) Insert one diagram for an open circulatory system and one diagram of a closed circulatory system. Give one advantage and one disadvantage of each system. (6 marks)

Name: Class:

tPart 2
Outcome: Use available evidence to discuss, using examples, the role of technologies, such as the use of isotopes in tracing the path of elements through living plants and animals. a) What is a radioisotope? (2 marks) b) Describe the use of radioisotopes to trace the movement of materials in living animals (2 marks) c) Explain how this technology can be used to trace the movement of elements in living plants (4 marks) Part 3: Outcome: Identify data sources, gather, process, analyse and present information from secondary sources and use available evidence to compare the digestive systems of mammals, including a grazing herbivore, carnivore and a predominantly nectar feeding animals. a) Research and present diagrams which show the digestive systems of each of the following animals dog, wombat, human, and a honey possum. Label at least 4 parts involved in digestion on each digestive system. (12marks) b) Draw a table to compare the 4 digestive systems of these animals in terms of Diet of each animal (e.g. Carnivores, herbivores etc) Length of each digestive system Type of food eaten by each animal and time spend in the digestive system Specialisation in digestive system (e.g role of teeth, caecum and digestive enzymes) (16 marks) You are required to use a range of secondary sources of information for your research. Read widely and select the relevant information that score marks and avoid plagiarism. A MARK OF ZERO WILL BE GIVEN FOR PLAGIARISM. DO NOT USE WIKIPEDIA AS A REFERENCE. List the sources that you have used, whether they are websites, books or articles under bibliography and cite where your information has come from. E-mail your work to your teacher on the due date. You must list your sources and references used under Bibliography. Here is a format for citing an internet reference. A suitable way to write a reference in your bibliography is:
The authors name

The book title

Biology in context The spectrum of life, Peter Aubusson& Eileen Kennedy Oxford University Press, OXFORD NEW YORK; 2000
The publishers name The place and year it was published

For internet reference, list full website, article name, Authors name, page number and time accessed the website. Example:http://www.biology.arizona.edu/cell_bio/tutorials/pev/page2.html accessed on 30/6/12

Marking criteria Part 1- Outcomes P6 Marks Will show these features 10-14 Excellent ability to list more than 4 descriptions for each of the open and closed circulatory systems. Clearly and accurately insert a diagram for each system and state one advantage and one disadvantage. 5- 9 Satisfactory list less than 4 descriptions for each for the open and closed circulatory systems. Insert a diagram for each system and state one advantage or one disadvantage. 0-4 Limited ability to list less than two descriptions for the open and closed circulatory systems (description not clear or incorrect) and insert one or no correct diagrams for either system and state one or no advantage or disadvantage. Part 2- Outcome P3 and P4 Marks Will show these features 6-8 Define clearly and accurately the term radioisotope and describe in details its uses to trace the movement of materials in living animals and plants using carbon 14 to trace the product of photosynthesis as an example 3- 5 02 Part 3-Outcome P6 Marks 16 28 8 15 07 Briefly define the term radioisotope and describe some uses to trace the movement of materials in living animals and plants. Define the term radioisotope incorrectly or no definition. Describe 2 or no uses of radioisotopes. Will show these features Correctly and accurately present a labelled diagram for the digestive systems of 4 different mammals listed. Draw a table and clearly and accurately study and compare the digestive systems of 4 different mammals Present the diagrams of 4 or less digestive systems with missing labels (less than 4 labels each) and draw a table with some missing or not accurate information to study and compare the four different digestive systems in mammals Limited ability to present and label the parts of less than 3 digestive systems ( label only two or less parts for each diagram) and study and compare few features of the digestive systems of four mammals.(less than 8 correct features with incomplete or no table) Will show these features Show a clear evidence of accessing information from a wide range of resources, citing websites as shown in the given example and is able to integrate information to produce appropriate texts for particular purpose. ( more than 5 sources) Satisfactory selects and summarises relevant information from a limited number of sources, citing websites as shown in the given example. (5 to 3 sources) Researches information from limited range of sources but didnt follow examples to cite websites. (1 to 2 sources). No bibliography listed

Will show these features Excellent ability to explain terminology using correct grammar, punctuation and spelling. Words are own words with full sentences using simple and clear language that convey meanings. Satisfactory ability to explain terminology using correct grammar, wit few spelling mistakes and missing punctuation. Words are own words with full sentences using simple but some unclear language.. Terminology is sometimes not clear poor grammar, some punctuation is missing or information does not show initiative. Brief sentences with missing nouns or pronouns many spelling mistakes. Poorly communicates information, punctuation is missing with poor grammar, spelling and words are not own words. 60
