come to the front in God's own time.
A fourteen year old boy secured a
place in a large store. One day his
employer sent him to the basementi to
overhaul and clean up several boxes
filled with scraps, old papers and rub-

bright five-dollar gold piece. He .
slipped it into his pocket and continued
his work until the last box was cleaned

"Oh, sir; that would not be honest,
and my mother always taught me to
be truthful and honest.''

scssed king. Like a clear sky after a long
period of storm and cloud, comes the
'' love-anthem' ' brotherhood of Saul's son,
and the coming king. Around this inci
dent one may gather and garland all the
world's best sayings on love and friend

you to the wider conception of this les-
son in Hugh Black's ''Friendship,'' Ale:t

COMMENT.
- J onntnan wasSaul"s son "and was Crown
Prince. On the death of his father the'
throne would have been his. The fact
that he was to.succced his .father, accqrd
ing to common custom, connected with the
expectations of the people, and the fact
that David had been a'nointcd ' by Samuel,
which Jonathan probably knew, would nat

heart clave to David."
Saul-demon-possessed, grew :ti-tore deter
mined to take David's life. He had re
jeeted God, and consequently he put him-
sef in tho place of people who nrc on tho
rejected side of God. He took the way of
envy and jealousy and they in turn make
place for a species of insanity whose sole
aim is to kill David. Like every insane
man he interprets everything he hears or
sees into r easons for fulfilling this desire.
Like every other insane man he seems en
dued with uncommon fertility .of cxpe
dient in devising plans; 'an'd conneCting up
a chain of present .circumstances to ac
.eomplish his purpose. In this lesson he
makes a very plausible plea to Jonathan
.in which the death of David was necessary
to his accession to tlio throne. Poor Jon
athan! He . have 'l;lnturally desired
him, and after him; has not this been as
sume!l the prerogative of kings7 He is .so
beside himself . that he brandishes his spear
menacingly at his ow'n son. Jonathan
leaves the room ''because his father had
hinl shame.'' Perhaps the .world
never can know what the members .of the
famj ly suffer when one of their number
loses mental balance! Poor Jonathan! '' '

Rahab hid those Joshua sent out. Every

ness of Jonathan ' and David milst . both be
concealed from the king and the public.
