RL-Series pole mounted load break switch

Introduction and Features

The RL-Series pole mounted gas insulated load break switch is available in manual and a remotely controlled switch. These switches provide the features of traditional load break switches, plus the benefits of an up to date design optimised for remote control.
After carefully evaluating customers needs, the RL-Series gas insulated load break switch was developed to achieve optimum performance and reliability, making use of the latest in available technology in SF6 arc interruption. The result is a competitive world-class product of which we are justly proud. By using this technologically advanced equipment, operating costs will be reduced, revenue will be increased through reduced outages and capital works can be deferred through better management of existing plant.

Reduced Purchase Cost

A modular design provides an easy upgrade path. It is possible to upgrade the basic manually operated model to a motorised remotely controlled switch.

Reduced Installation Costs

A cross arm mounting bracket is provided in the standard package. The 27kV model is supplied with a 400 amp insulated cable tail kit. Cables are not included with the 15kV bare terminal model.

Reduced Operating Costs

Long lifetime, low maintenance equipment reduces lifetime cost.

Increased Revenue
Supply can be quickly restored to unaffected areas, resulting in less outage time and therefore increased revenue.

Deferred Capital Works

Remotely controlled load break switches provide better system control. Feeder and substation load can then be remotely managed improving utilisation of existing plant. Purchase of new plant can then most likely be deferred for a considerable period of time.

Gas Insulated Switch Overview and Operation

The RL-Series gas insulated pole mounted load break switch can be upgraded to an automated unit with communications.
The switch is designed around puffer interrupters contained in a fully welded and sealed 316 grade stainless steel enclosure filled with SF6 gas. The SF6 gas as the insulating and arc quenching media together with the puffing principle ensure the positive breaking of small currents, mainly active load currents, cable charging current, magnetising current, etc. The extremely short arcing times (within half a cycle) plus tulip type contacts with arc resistant material ensure the long switching life and extended short circuit making capability. The interrupters are ganged together and driven by an over-centering spring mechanism. This is operated either manually or by a DC motor in a motor compartment below the tank. All switches are fitted with a manual operating arm that allows hookstick operation from ground level. By pulling on the appropriate side of the arm the load break switch can be tripped or closed. The mechanism is "operator independent" so that it does not matter how fast or slow the arm is moved by the operator. A motor mechanism is used in feeder automation schemes to facilitate remote control. The motor is fitted to the switch and its power is supplied from batteries installed in the pole mounted control and communications cubicle. This cubicle also houses the mechanism control and battery charging unit. A detachable control cable is used to connect the cubicle to the switch. The tulip contact with arc resistant material (Cu-W) ensures the long contact life and high short circuit making capability.

Modular design

Safe design
In the event of an internal arc fault, a vent on the side of the load break switch ruptures to vent the over-pressure. This eliminates the risk of explosion or detachment from the power pole and since the unit is not oil filled, a major fire hazard is eliminated.
Load Break Switch with optional motor

A low pressure locking device locks the manual operating handle if the pressure drops below a pre-set threshold.

Easy Installation
High voltage connections are made with insulated cable terminated on epoxy bushings. The cable and bushings are covered by a gripping elastomeric boot that is filled with silicone grease to form an insulated system on the 27kV model. The 15kV model is provided with bare terminals instead of the covered assemblies. The switch is installed using the standard cross arm mounting bracket.

Motor Option
An optional motor pack can be purchased which then allows the switch to be interfaced to Nu-Lec Industries or third party control cubicles to provide local and/or remote control.
