DAMAGE CONTROL

Introduction
Damage control aboard ship involves any careful action that will prevent or reduce expected damage to the ship, stabilize the situation caused by the damage. Know the typical shipboard damage control organization and responsibilities of key personnel Know how shipboard watertight integrity is obtained Know the various conditions of readiness Know the importance of preventive damage control

Damage control involves all aspects of damage that a ship may encounter by accident, or by plan, in port or underway, such as: 1. Fire & Explosion 2. Collision 3. Flooding 4. Grounding 5. Hostile action directed at the ship The vital damage control systems aboard ship include are 1. Communications 2. Emergency power 3. Pumping system 4. Fire main 5. Drainage system

Damage control
Damage control is a 3-phase activity. There are Prevent the damage, Minimize the effects of damage and Restore the ship to an effective fighting unit. Organization, Education, Training, Maintenance of equipment are the main effective damage control requires. 90% of

the damage control needed to save a ship takes place before the damage occurs. Damage Control Organization are classified into two position and location.

POSITION/COC
CO CHENG (DC Officer) DC Assistant Locker Officers/Leaders Scene Leaders \Hose teams

LOCATION
CIC/Bridge Main Control DC Central Repair Locker Scene of damage

Emergency Lockers
When a ship is designed then built, emergency lockers are built into the ship at a specific location for numerous reasons. The number of lockers may be determined by the type and class of ship and the number of personnel assigned to the ship.

Damage Control Central

It is the brain of the DC central nervous system. DCA controls repair parties from here. On newer class ships, the central point for

reporting is the central control station (CCS)

Repair parties
All ships have a m i n i m u m o f r e p a i r l o c k e r s 2 , 3 , a n d 5 . E a c h lockers has on officer or senior petty officer charge.

Make repairs to electrical and communication circuits and rig casualty power. Give first aid and transport injured personnel to battle dressing stations. Deck plans showing location of CBR contamination, location of battle dressing, decontamination stations, and safe routes to them. Be familiar with all damage control fittings in t h e assigned area, such as watertight doors, h a t c h e s , s c u t t l e s , v e n t i l a t i o n s y s t e m s , a n d various valves. Control and clean up hazardous material spills

Fire parties
Made up of portion of repair parties. Composition varies depending on ship size.

Compartmentalization
Ships can have up to 600 watertight compartments. Barrier to fires and flood. There prevents further damage. Not effective if watertight integrity is not maintained.

Material Conditions of Readiness

Each material condition represents a degree of Tightness orsecure. Doo,Hatches,Scuttles etc. There are three conditions of readiness.

Material Conditions of Readiness

1. X-ray (X) Provides least protection Set when ship not in danger of attack (Well-protected harbor) 2. Yoke (Y) More protection Set in unprotected harbor/after hours or normal underway 3. Zebra (Z) Maximum protection Wartime or General Quarters (GQ) Localize fire/flooding 4. Circle X and Y: Letter within black circle May be opened without permission, but must be closed after use 5. Circle Z: Letter within red circle May be opened during GQ for comfort of the crew with CO permission Guarded while open so they can be shut immediately

6. William (W): Sea suction valves which serve vital systems cooling water. Closed only to prevent further damage 7. Circle W: Letter within black circle Ventilation fittings, which are normally open, are closed when NBC attack is imminent 8. Dog Z: Letter within black D Closed during darken ship as well as General Quarters
