Installation overview
Business Objects BI Server is a server-side installation. This means that you install it on one central server rather than on each users machine. Users then access Business Objects BI Server from their individual machines through the web portal interface, known as InfoView. Note: Business Objects BI Server comes with Crystal Xcelsius capabilities. To enable these Crystal Xcelsius features, download Xcelsius Connectivity from the Add-ons/Xcelsius Connectivity/ directory of your product distribution.
Additional documentation
After installing Business Objects BI Server, refer to the Business Objects BI Server Getting Started Guide included in the docs directory of your product distribution for information on how to use the various features available in Business Objects BI Server. If you are looking for further information about installation, or administration, consult the following guides available from the Business Objects Customer Support web site at: http://support.businessobjects.com/documentation/
BusinessObjects Enterprise XI R2 Installation Guide for Windows BusinessObjects Enterprise XI R2 Administrators Guide BusinessObjects Enterprise XI R2 Administrators Reference Guide Business Objects BI Server Document Roadmap The Business Objects BI Server Document Roadmap is designed to help you differentiate between the information in the BusinessObjects Enterprise guides that applies to Business Objects BI Server and the information that does not apply. It references relevant BusinessObjects Enterprise guides and lets you see at a glance what information is available, and from where. You can access the Business Objects BI Server Document Roadmap guide from the docs directory of your product distribution.

System requirements
Generally, the following components must be installed and configured correctly on the server before you install Business Objects BI Server:
For a detailed list of tested environments, consult the Platforms.txt file included with your product distribution. This file includes specific version and Service Pack requirements for web servers, web browsers, web application servers, databases, and operating systems. For additional important information that may pertain to your deployment, it is also strongly recommended that you consult the Release Notes included with your product distribution (release.pdf, release.htm, or release.rtf).
Optional configuration
The tasks outlined in this section are not required for you to successfully install Business Objects BI Server. Depending on how you decide to configure your Business Objects BI Server environment, you may or may not want to perform them. If you want to perform a basic installation, go directly to Full stand-alone installation on page 14.
Security
11
The CMS database stores information about the users created for the system and the rights that the users have been granted. The CMS enforces these rights.
Objects Files published to Business Objects BI Server are known as objects, and include such file types as Web Intelligence and Crystal reports. The CMS database stores information about the location of these objects in the Business Objects BI Server system. It also maintains the hierarchy of folders, categories, and inboxes that the objects are organized into.
Servers The CMS database stores a list of status for various servers that are part of Business Objects BI Server. Other Business Objects BI Server components can access the database to get information about the availability of services required to perform tasks in the system.
For detailed information about each server, see the BusinessObjects Enterprise Administrators Guide.
12
the server to use Unicode encoding for the character data types. For other databases, such as DB2, you can create the CMS database with Unicode settings on your existing database server. 1. 2. To set up a database account for Business Objects BI Server Determine whether the CMS should use Windows NT or SQL Server authentication when connecting to your local database installation. Using your usual administrative tools, create or select a user account that provides Business Objects BI Server with the appropriate privileges to your database server:
If you want the CMS to connect to its database using Windows NT authentication, ensure that the Windows NT user account that you assign to the CMS belongs to the System Administrators role in your SQL Server installation. In this scenario, the Windows NT user account that you assign to the CMS is not actually used to create the system database during the installation process. Instead, your own Windows NT administrative account is used to create the database, so verify that your Windows NT account also belongs to the System Administrators role in your SQL Server installation.
If you want the CMS to connect to its database using SQL Server authentication, the login that you assign to the CMS must belong to the Database Creators role in your SQL Server installation. In this scenario, the SQL Server credentials that you assign to the CMS are also used to create the database and its tables.
3.
Verify that you can log on to SQL Server and carry out administrative tasks using the account you set up for use by the CMS.
13
To install several Business Objects products on a non-system drive, install Business Objects BI Server first. All Business Objects products that you install subsequently will use this same non-system drive for their shared files. Note: If MySQL or Microsoft SQL Server is already installed on the local machine, you must first set up an account for the CMS. For detailed information about each server, see the BusinessObjects Enterprise Administrators Guide.
Installation Options
You can choose between these installation types when you are installing Business Objects BI Server:
14
The Perform Client Installation option that also appears here only installs client tools onto a machine. This installation can be used to administer your Business Objects BI Server environment remotely. For detailed information about this type of installation, see the Client Tools Installation section in chapter three of the BusinessObjects Enterprise Installation Guide. 5. Fill out the Full Name and Organization fields.
6. 7. 8.
Enter your product keycode in the Product Keycode field, and click Next. In the Directory Selection dialog box. Select a location and click Next. If you chose to install to the default location (C:\Program Files\Business Objects\), go to step 9. If you chose to install on a drive other than the default location, the Setup program asks you to select a drive for the installation of shared files. These common files are also used by Business Objects products such as Crystal Reports. Note: To install several Business Objects products on the same machine without installing files on the default system drive, first install Business Objects BI Server. When you subsequently install other Business Objects
15
software such as Crystal Reports, it will use the common file directory created by Business Objects BI Server. Otherwise, the Setup program proceeds directly to the Install Type dialog box.
9.
Click New.
If you want to install the MySQL database as your CMS database, click Install MySQL database server, and then click Next. This is the recommended installation. If you want to use another database for the CMS, such as Oracle or Sybase, click Use an existing database server, and then click Next. For information and instructions on how to use an existing database server, refer to the BusinessObjects Enterprise Installation Guide. This information can be found in the chapter called Installing BusinessObjects Enterprise on Windows under the section New installation.

Tip: Sample reports are installed by default, so you can verify your installation and learn your way around Business Objects BI Server. 16. Click Finish.
19
After completing the full stand-alone installation, go to section Testing your installation on page 24.
Silent installation
A silent installation is one that you run from the command line to install Business Objects BI Server on any machine in your system. When you run a silent installation, you can:
Specify all the parameters to be used for the install at the same time on the command line, rather than several at a time on each of the different install screens. Specify other options that control the prompt level you want for the install.
The silent install is run from the command line. The command includes a series of parameters that provide information for installation settings and directory paths. You can also specify options that control the level of prompts during an install. The silent installation is particularly useful when you need to perform multiple installations or you do not want to interrupt people who are working on machines in your system. You can also use the silent installation command in your own scripts. For example, if your organization uses scripts to install software on machines, you can add the silent Business Objects BI Server installation command to your scripts. The silent installation command consists of the command setup.exe, followed by the install destination, and a number of parameters that provide information about the installation. The following example installs Business Objects BI Server with the CMS and Tomcat and MySQL onto the machine with no user interface and no prompt and the end of the installation.:
setup.exe CLIENTLANGUAGE=EN INSTALLLEVEL=6 INSTALLDIR=c:\Program Files\My Preferred_Location REBOOT=ReallySuppress PIDKEY=A1234-ABCD123-12345A6 DATABASEPWD_MYSQL =rpassword DATABASEUID=sa DATABASEPWD=mypassword /qn
The example uses the most common parameters. You can choose any number of valid parameters, but it is good practice to keep the silent installation as simple as possible.
20
The following table lists the most common parameters used in a silent installation. To use a parameter, place it on the command line after the setup.exe command and the path for the installation files. Installation parameter
