PALO, Leyte - If the problem on lack of teachers is bothering, shortage of dentist to check oral health needs of public school learners is more alarming. e Department of Education disclosed that Eastern Visayas has only 37 school dentists to attend to needs of projected 1,117,737 enrollees in kindergarten, elementary, and secondary level this school year. For dental services the ratio should be one dentist for every 18,000 learners but in the region, a dentist has to check the oral health of 30,209 enrollees every school year, said Renelda Salar, DepEds supervising nutritionist. e dentists are also tasked to check oral health status of public school teachers and non-teaching personnel. Dental carries is consistently the leading ailment among elementary school pupils in Eastern Visayas with 17% of students have tooth problem. Records of the DepEd regional health and nutrition unit shows that 118,909 pupils got this problem representing 17% of the 707,367 Grades 1 to 6 kids assessed. Salar said that one of the most common reasons, aside from poverty, why some pupils are absent in classes is because of su ering tooth aches. ere are some students who nished elementary and never get a chance to meet a
public school dentist. Oral health care is very crucial for elementary pupils, Salar said. e shortage of dentist is one of the factors tagged why school children have oral hygiene, unaware of brushing of teeth and eating sweet and sticky foods. e DepEd o cial said that theyve been doing their part to address the problem by training teachers on dental health and incorporating the topic in Science and Health subjects. Under the dental health program, the government provides some toothbrush, toothpaste, and sodium uoride solution for mouth rinsing to reduce damage of teeth by 30 percent, however, budget constraint only allows DepEd to reach out few learners. Other common ailments among elementary pupils in the region are pediculosis, colds, cough, scabies enlarged cervical myrrh nodes, skin diseases, and acne. Described as tooth, dental carries is an infectious disease which damages the structures of teeth. e disease can lead to pain, tooth loss, infection, and, in severe cases, death. Tooth decay is caused by certain types of acid-producing bacteria which cause damage in the presence of fermentable carbohydrates such as sucrose, fructose, and glucose. e resulting acidic levels in the mouth a ect teeth because a tooths special mineral content causes it to be sensitive to low. hen a teacher has an unfortunate encounter with a student who doesnt have the tiniest grasp of even the rudiments of simple English construction, he knows that kid is in trouble. That seems to be the appalling plight of the tots of this generation. Admittedly, education goes beyond the slight if not insignificant ability to let out and express thoughts, verbal or written, in English or otherwise, but coherently. Yet the quest for education sought through schooling is a means to an end job generation. Surely, one who is able to write and speak basic English has far greater edge than one who bungles at even how to pronounce a simple English word correctly insofar as seeking employment is concerned. Like it or not, one who is able to express himself in the second official language impresses greater appeal than one who cannot. It is true too that education is in no way akin to schooling even as Mark Twain vouched not to allow his schooling interfere with his educa-
tion. But while not similar, one is the implement of the other in that one way to get education is through schooling. And schooling as one implement of education has suffered a great deal in these parts. That really should not have been the trend what with the advancements in technology and the convenience and vastness offered by the internet where one can easily feed himself with vast information with one mere click of the mouse. Unfortunately, while technology has become more and more sophisticated, our tots have become dumber and dumber. Maybe the root cause of this plunging decline is not the innovation in technology so much as the quality of elementary and secondary education offered by our schools. The problem is that while teachers have the necessary capability to impart knowledge, they lack the how part of the equation. Indeed, it is one thing to possess knowledge, it is another to impart it, and effectively.
Not an overkill
Just blaming Leyte Metropolitan Water District for its still not perfect or not highly reliable water service. Criticisms kept coming. No, it wasnt an overkill. With every Taclobanon denizen who fully understands what freedom of information and public service, or basic service, Tacloban community can always exercise its right to air its grievance, its discontent. Its normal. But itd be abnormal if its continued grievances continue to be simply ignored. And itd be highly abnormal if, despite the continuing or recurring problem with LMWDs still not-100-per-cent reliably safe water, Taclobanons will just keep silent. Until this writing, my Ine or Ini? Which one is right? This Waray word means ito in Tagalog, kini in Cebuano este in Spanish and this in English. Its correct form cannot be established ,neither agreed on, yet. There are many Waray terms that suffer this fate. Of course, efforts had long been there, to purify Waray language (or dialect, which is an anathema to many Waray writers and Waray grammarians) and many of its terms, either in spelling, accentuation, or in syllabication. Only those who expressly agree as members in a specific group agree and insist on that which to them is correct and right. Other
own visual examination of the faucet water coming out about just 3 feet away from LMWDs water meter installation for the house where I usually rest had been showing transparent filament-like particles or very thin strips of what-could-that-be-which is alien to H2O and a few hours
later, the container bottom filled with that water would show dusty or sandy particles. Emptying the container and leaving a little amount of water would blur and discolour the remaining water. Again it is asked: SAFE BA INE? ***

are located in Benguet, Bukidnon, Laguna, and Nueva Ecija. Very noticeable that the US AgriFirm has skipped Eastern Visayas, specifically the Province of Leyte, as test area, apparently with no reasons at all! This matter should be a wake up call for the Regional Office of the Department of Agriculture. Should not the DAR8 be proactive, instead, by having a dialogue with the US Agriseeds management and offer Region 8 as possible test area for breeding rice, corn and vegetable crops. Except for rice, Leyte could hardly brag about its corn production! A visit to the towns of Leyte Province finds only sporadic plantations of corn. Our basic kitchen/cooking ingredients/vegetable crops have yet to come from faraway Davao or Benguet, local production being insufficient. What happened to the devolution of DA personnel, now attached to the LGUs? Are their report cards submitted to the Provincial/Regional DA offices or are these available for public scrutiny. Believe you may, there are MAO personnel who do not even know how many hectares in their respective municipalities are planted to rice? Realizing that the Philippine economy is still anchored on agriculture, a US firm called Agriseeds has ventured to introduce agrotechnology by putting up breeding facilities for various farm crops. Thus, the following farm crops are being breed using their technology and equipment 1. Corn this staple grain is earmarked for breeding in South Cotabato using a 5 10 hectare corn breeding station. According to the US Agriseeds managers, operating through its Philippine-based counterpart, South Cotabato is a good place to breed (hybrid corn seeds) because of high disease prevalence . . .. The project is likely to be launched this year or in 2014. 2. Rice - the US Agriseeds operates a breeding station covering 4 5 hectares in Nueva Ecija. Likewise, runs satellite test stations in a 1-hectare
land each in Los Banos and Davao. Other areas being targeted for rice test breeding are in Panay, Davao del Norte, Bukidno, and Misamis provinces. The US Firm markets hybrid rice varieties TH82, able to withstand intermittent irrigation, but has yield of 11 tons per hectare and adopts to the climatic condition in Nueva Ecija. Another variety sold by the Firm called US 88 has a maximum yield of 11 tons per hectare. Their third variety (still with no market code) being tested, has an average of 9 tons yield per hectare, matures in a shorter period, has superior grain quality, and is recommended for 3-cropping cycles in a year. 3. Vegetable Crops aside from the two staple food grains, US Agriseeds also breeds seeds for highend vegetable crops like cucumber, eggplant, chili, tomato, squash, watermelon, and sweet corn, primarily in Nueva Ecija. Some students seem to have developed hatred for literature that they sometimes question the wisdom of taking it up in school, particularly in college where at least one literature subject is prescribed in the curriculum. They find the idea of reading imaginative works so irrelevant to the world of reality they are in, hence their complaints of having to waste their time, effort, and money especially in grappling with extended texts like novels. The seeming insignificance of the subject is underscored when they compare it with what they think are more relevant subjects like mathematics, English, history, science, etc. While such courses could provide them with useful knowledge once they get
out into the world of work, literature being largely based on fantasy and imagination affords them with nothing but glimpses of abstract ideas. For this they earn some kind of right to indeed question literatures relevance to this material world. But educators and experts in the academe have another ideastudents must take up at least one literature subject, knowing its tremendous importance in our individual and collective lives. Students, in their youthful perceptions, may not realize this, but adults know better, given their accumulated wisdom and experiences. They know, without the shadow of a doubt, that young people ought to have exposure to literature and take it up in school, not just for them to
graduate, but for more valid reasons. It is a must, for instance, that youngsters should acquire and develop values and norms that they need to apply in dealing with people in society. Without showcasing these values in their lives, they could be accused of having no manners that could result in their embarrassment or even rejection from various groups. To ensure values formation on their part, they must immerse themselves to literature, which has been proven to be a very effective supplier of values. Experience, they say, is the best teacher. The more experiences one gets, the better it is for him since these will teach and guide him in confronting lifes complexities. These experiences need not be personal wherein one goes through them for real; they could be surrogate, or borrowed experiences. Literature, being a written record of mans multifarious experiences, is the best source from which to draw all kinds of experiences that humans could possibly acquire, hence its relevance. Your Father knows, what you need before you ask him. This is how you are to pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven.
