"In commenting about her lack of knowledge, one student wrote: It is really sad to see that I dont

know much about indigenous people. These people have a big history, one in which part of my past is included. (Veronica Len 13 May 2003) Within one sentence, she both distanced herself by relegating indigenous people to a group outside of her own experience and history by writing these people and then claimed them as a people connected to her past."

This is the text I found that quotes someone exacts words. I feel as if the writer integrated this quotation perfectly simply because it is a perfect example of what the whole article is about, in just one sentence. He introduced by discussing the students general lack of knowledge about their pa sts. He tied it to his own text because a majority of the article is about how these students taking this short course, never knew about their ancestry. He explains how its not just a matter of knowledge to them, but a matter of emotion as well. This quote embodies that. I dont think there could be any changes to make this quote more effective in this literary piece.

Summary

In Leyvas article In ixtli in yllotl/ a face and a heart: Listening to the Ancestors, he asks a number of questions, and explains to us the journey he took with a small group of students in Ocotepec, Morelos at Nahuatl University. Specifically, Leyva argues that these students are not in touch with their pasts fully. While they may know their Spanish origin, their native Mesoamerican histories are forgotten. They were never taught the full story in school, they were only taught one side. According to Leyva, It is common to hear both Chicanos and Mexicanos describe ourselves as the mixture of Spaniard and Indian, with the Spanish part dominating and the African part invisible. These students were taught that the Indian sides of their heritage were negative and derogatory. Therefore, they never took the extra effort to learn about it. I agree that it is saddening that these students never truly learned about their full past until the course they are currently taking. In my view, this course is just the beginning of the generation that is willing to learn this information, hopefully before its too late. For instance, the professor was glad to see all the students writing daily in their journals about what they saw and learned. They also expressed interest and eagerness. Overall, I believe the course created will teach a great deal to these students about their pasts, as well as whoever else may eventually take this intriguing course.
