Anointing of the Sick

Please notify us (355.1292) as early as possible for the Anointing of the Sick, the sacrament intended for the seriously ill or dying. It is Our Lords special presence and companionship in serious time of need. Anointing may take place in the home, at the hospital or elsewhere and as often as once a month. If someone should die without anointing, remember that the desire to receive is sufficient and the Lord cares!

Sacraments of Reconciliation and first Eucharist

Preparation for children who have attained the age of reason (usually during 2nd grade) is arranged either through the Office of Religious Education or St. Rita Elementary School.

If You Should Experience the Loss of a Loved One

Please call us at 355.1292 If you feel you will be in need, or your loved one has passed, we will assist in making arrangements with your chosen funeral directors; refer you to our liturgy and music directors; and offer you helpful guidelines and a book that will aid in the selection of readings for the Mass or Memorial Service. Areas we can help you with prior to the passing may help in the planning of funeral services. We know that this can be a tough time and we want you to know that your parish is there for you. PLEASE UNDERSTAND we only have one resident priest, sometimes arrangements for another priest may be needed.

Sacrament of Matrimony
Contact the Parish Office upon engagement; at least six months is needed for preparation of this joyous sacrament!

Sacrament of Confirmation

OF

CASCIA CHURCH

PASTORS CORNER
Dear Parishioners,
This Sundays Liturgy of the Word puts before us the Good News that those who have sinned much can be forgiven much. In the first reading Nathan informs David that the Lord, for his part, has forgiven him his sinseven though his sins were that he [David] killed Uriah the Hittite and took his wife for his own. Jesus in the Gospel defends the sinful city woman and explains to Simon that she who has sinned much will be all the more grateful for the forgiveness she receives. In fact he tells the woman that her faith has saved her and to Go in peace. Todays readings beg the question, "How ready are we to forgive? Certainly King Davidat the very leastbroke the law when he murdered and committed adultery. Whatever the sinful woman from the city did was most certainly against the law. It is Paul who addresses forgiveness and law when he writes to the Galatians: even we have believed in Christ Jesus that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified. We live in a world today in which, not only are people being tempted to take the law into their own hands, but they have weapons of mass destruction to carry out their (probably crazed) will. We know all too tragically the enormous harm that can follow from that! Our country along with many other countries struggles with the hot button issues of the day, and in some cases those issues are before our own Congress, President, and United States Supreme Court as we speak. And, speaking of courts, let us remember that all of the above technically are in Caesars court; what emerges may or may not be what is declared in Gods courtthat is, Jesus kingdom. Who gets to define what living a rule of law society means? Whats a Christian to do? In my first assignment as a priest in inner city Los Angeles, I lived near a troubled, gang-ridden junior high school, and sometimes I had coffee in the morning before school with some of its teachers. Once, one of those teachers said to me, You Catholics are lucky. You get to teach Catholic morality in your schools. We public schools are expected to hand on morals to the children, but we cant seem to get there, because no one can agree on whose morals are allowed to be taught. Well, there you have it. If you and I could claim like Paul, I live, no longer I, but Christ lives in me, what difference might that make in our decisions and how we livehow we treat the sinner and the evildoer? I could hand the lawbreaker over and be satisfied that I kept the letter of the lawgave to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, but would I have given to God what belongs to God? Paul says that the law has no power to justify me, only faith in Jesus Christ who gave his life for me can, in the end, justify and save me. And, by all means, let us all take a stand on what Jesus would do, but lets make sure and do our homework first and be ready to back up our claim by the clear evidence of Jesus life and how he lived it. Rediscovering the Eucharist: Celebration and Adoration

How providential that June opened, in this Year of Faith, with the solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi). June's Sunday Gospels show Jesus comforting the afflicted and forgiving sin, predicting his saving passion and challenging would-be disciples to take up their cross daily and follow him. But faithful discipleship is impossible without the grace that flows from Christ's Eucharistic sacrifice, without the comfort bestowed by Jesus' abiding Eucharistic presence. Thus June becomes a grace-filled opportunity to renew our appreciation of the multiple dimensions of the Eucharist by rediscovering the riches of the Church's teaching: Eucharist as sacrifice and paschal banquet; Christ's Real Presence; full, conscious and active participation (internal and external); fruits of the Eucharist in our personal and communal lives; Eucharist as pledge of future glory.

PASTOR NEWS NOTES
JOS LUIS RODRIGUEZ - SALUD! Youth NiteWednesday, June 26, 7 pm, Gara Youth MassSaturday, July 6, 5:30 pm ServiceUnion Station, Sunday, July 7, 7:30-10am Our Youth Nites and Youth Masses continue throughout the summer as well as service opportunities. Have a great summer and dont forget to check in at your St. Rita home from time-to-time! Theresa Costanzo ym@st-rita.org As I had been tutored about St. Rita Parish by Msgr. Joseph Cokus, in my interview with him before I applied for this parish, Msgr. Joe spoke of a loyal and faithful staffer, Jos, who knew the parish plant inside and out. So the first time I encountered said employee, I said, You must be Jos. He replied briskly and with his wry smile, Jos Luis! My name is Jos Luis! I knew instinctively that I was being put on notice. The feeling definitely was, dont presume anything, you need to earn my trust, and just, saying, Ive already buried one pastor, sent one into retirement, and youre just next on the list. By the way, to this day, I think Im the only one here that calls Jos, Jos Luis. I believe that from day one, for Jos, it has always been about the kids. He has been surrogate and real father and grandfather to them. From rescuing stray backpacks and lunch containers to walking St. Rita Students across Baldwin Avenue, Mr. Rodriguez has watched after their safety and wellbeing for 38 years. And now, when this pastor of only 9 years welcomes and greets returning alumni, one of the first questions is always, Is Jos still here? Its almost like, The buildings are still here; Jos must still be here. Being part of a parish staff, its life and ministry, for as long as Jos has, brings certain benefits, for instance: enjoying multigenerational friendships, being part of the very history and story of a faith community, becoming a happy memory of a persons childhood, and claiming a certain wisdom about how to be a successful Catholic parish and school. These are gifts of a lifetime and will be the gifts that keep on giving beyond retirement. Jos is also part of this pastors arrival at St. Rita and of his support system to be a successful pastor. I am deeply grateful to you, Jos, for that! For me and for so many you will always be a shining piece of the mosaic that we know as St. Rita Parish. And so Jos, for you and for your wife, Aurora, and the Rodriguez family all of us at St. Rita pray every spiritual blessing, sustained health, and very happy retirement years. Thank you, Jos, and remember, (forgive my limited Spanish)

Thank You!
The St. Rita Guild is appreciative of all your donations last week-endwe filled a van with food and received $197 in cash/check donations. Your generosity means a lot to those who struggle to put food on their tables. And thank you to all the Guild members who helped with the collection, sorting, and delivery of the food.
