Lesson Plan
Baseball Math
Mean, Median and Mode
2013
Who (if anybody) will assist with the presentation of this lesson, and what will their role be? No assistance
What is the long range goal(s) that is tied to this lesson? For students to demonstrate proficiency in calculating mean, median and mode
What is the specific learning objective(s) for this lesson? TSW calculate the mean, median and mode of various baseball statistics
What prerequisite skills/knowledge will students need to effectively access and participate in this lesson? Understanding of addition and division. Also a general knowledge of baseball stats
When within the stages of learning will this lesson be presented? (Is it a learning acquisition lesson, learning fluency lesson, learning maintenance lesson, or learning generalization lesson?)
When will this lesson be completed? (Will it be a one-day lesson or a multiple day lesson?) It will be a one-day lesson
Where should this lesson be presented to ensure maximum student access and participation? (computer lab, classroom, science lab) AND what materials will be needed? How will technology be incorporated into the lesson?
The lesson will take place in the general classroom. Projector and Promethean Board will be used. Baseball cards, calculators, paper and pencil will be needed
Why are you planning to teach this lesson? Why must this information/skill be presented to the students? To reinforce the Everyday Math lesson on mean, median and mode
How does this lesson relate to the PA Academic Standards? It addresses the numerical summaries in the statistics and data analysis area of the PA Academic Standards
How does this lesson relate to the previous lesson? How does this lesson relate to future lessons? It is a reinforcement of previous lessons
How will you determine if students have met the lesson objective? (Think assessment) Group recording sheet
How should this lesson be presented to ensure maximum student access and participation? (lecture, whole group activities, small group activities, cooperative learning groups)
_____________________________________________
Pennsylvania Academic Standard(s) addressed during this lesson: (Provide Standard number and statement) 2.6.4.C. - Describe and calculate the mean and use this quantity to describe the data.
Lesson Objective(s) (Stated in observable and measurable terms) TSW calculate the mean of five baseball players home-run totals TSW calculate the median of three pitchers earned-run averages TSW calculate the mode of five baseball players runs-batted in totals
Assessment Plan (What will be done to determine if lesson objectives have been met?) The scoring of the group worksheet
Inclusion Techniques for Students with Special Needs: Enlarged baseball cards
Enrichment Techniques: Student can use internet resources to research a favorite baseball player(s) and calculate the mean, median and mode from that players past five games
Lesson Differentiation (What modifications/accommodations will be made to ensure that ALL students have access to and are able to participate in the lesson): Enlarged print, algorithm reference sheet, calculators
Lesson Presentation Introduction/Motivational Activities/Anticipatory Set: Show the accompanying photostory madefor this lesson
Detailed Teaching Sequence: (Provide sufficient detail that would enable a substitute to effectively present this lesson. Bulleted statements are preferred) * Review mean, median and mode * Introduce how to read a baseball card * Define statistics for home-runs, runs-batted in and earned-run averages * Demonstrate mean, median and mode using runs and hits statistics from baseball cards
* Introduce the assignment of calculating the mean of home-runs, the median of earned-run averages and the mode of runs-batted in stats * Divide students into small groups of 3-4 students
Guided Practice/Independent Practice/Assessment Activities Students will complete a small-group worksheet where they will list the statistics from identified baseball cards and show their calculations for mean, median and mode algorithms
What were the lesson strengths, and what were the lesson limitations?
What if anything was missed/omitted during the writing of the lesson plan?
Did the lesson accommodations and modifications and the inclusion and enrichment techniques enable ALL students to gain access to and participate in the lesson?
