Question : You are a member of the Environment Club in your school.

You are asked to give a talk about the polluted rivers in your neighbourhood. Introduction Good morning Mr. Liew, our principal, Miss Leela, our advisor and all the members and friends. Thank you for giving me this opportunity to speak to you about the polluted rivers in our neighbourhood. Description of the problem When I first moved here five years ago, the water in the river was clear and clean. There were fish in the river and plants growing by the river banks. Now, all that is gone. The factories built here recently have been polluting the rivers. These irresponsible people have been pouring chemical and toxic wastes into the rivers. Apart from that irresponsible people also have been throwing household rubbish into the rivers. This further clogs the river and even emits a foul smell that causes discomfort among the residents. The effect of the problem polluted river Now, most of the fish have died because of the chemicals. Birds no longer come to the river because there are no more fish. The plants along the river bank have also died. The whole area is no longer beautiful and full of life as it once used to be. In fact, the river is now a breeding place for insects, especially mosquitoes. What can be done to overcome this problem - Enforcement We must do something to stop this act before it is too late. The authorities should enforce stricter/stringent laws to prevent dumping of wastes into the rivers. They should also give out heavy fines/penalties to those who disobey the laws. They should also revoke the license of those who disobey. Awareness campaign to educate the public Apart from that, awareness campaigns must be carried out to educate the public about the proper ways of rubbish disposal. Also, rubbish bins must be placed at most places so that people can throw rubbish appropriately. Lastly, I would like to appeal everyone to appreciate nature and take care of the environment because remember this is the only earth we have. If we destroy it, we will not have a place to live in anymore. With that, I thank you.

Do not run in front of or behind a moving car. Finally do not run in front of or behind a moving car. Sometimes, the driver may not notice you, especially if he is reversing. Fatal accidents have occurred when a driver reverses a car right into a child who is standing or playing behind the car. On the drivers part, he or she has to look carefully to see whether there is anybody behind the car before reversing it. These are only some of the ways of preventing road accidents. The keyword here is to be alert and take a lot of care when using the road or when near a moving vehicle. If these steps are taken, at least some of the road accidents that occur can be prevented. Question

: Should teachers give too much homework?

Homework is an essential part of school life. However, in my opinion, teachers shouldnt give too much homework. I feel that the work done in class is enough. It would be better for teachers to give students exercises in class where they can monitor the students as they do their work. If the students face any difficulties, they can immediately clarify the problem with the teacher. Many students face difficulties doing their homework at home. If they are lucky, their parents or older siblings can help them. However, if there is no one to help and they dont complete their homework, then they will have to face the music. Besides this, homework takes up so much time that students dont have enough time to study or revise their lesson. Project work, especially, involves a lot of work, effort and time. I feel that students are so burdened with homework that they don have extra time to do anything else. They have no time to play games and relax. This is very stressful. A healthy child can perform much better in his studies than one who is always tired and stressed. I hope that the relevant authorities give some thought to this issue and regulate the amount of homework that should be given to students. This will be beneficial to both students and teachers.

Question

: As a committee member of the Conservation Club of your school, you have been asked to write on recycling newspapers to be printed in the club bulletin. Using the information given in the pictures below, write your article.

Recycling Old Newspaper How is waste paper recycled to make newspaper? At the factory, the old newspapers are first collected and soaked in water to soften them. They are then put into a machine. This machine called the depulper, has sharp rotating blades, which shreds the softened newspaper and makes it into a pulp Next, the pulp is fed into another machine called a washer. The ink as well as all the staples and clips are removed in this machine. After all the dirt has been washed off, the pulp is then fed into the chemical tank where bleach is added to get rid of the colour of the newspaper. This makes the pulp white. The pulp is then passed through rollers where all the excess water is squeezed out. This allows the pulp to dry faster. It is then passed through a huge dryer where the pulp comes out in large flat sheets of paper, which are then rolled into large spools. The recycled paper is used in many ways, for example to make cardboard boxes, cards, posters, paper, toilet rolls and gift wrappers. So, the next time you read the newspapers, do not throw them away after you have finished reading them. Keep them instead and send them to The Conservation Club Collection Centre. Recycle and save our Environment- thats our motto. By Rahul. Question : The Nature Society in your school is organizing a Think Before You Throw campaign. As the president of the society, you are asked to give a speech to create an awareness on the importance of a clean environment among students. Good morning En. Somu, the Principal, Mr Siva the advisor of the Nature Society, teachers and friends. Today the Nature Society are organising a very important campaign Think Before You Throw. There is a need for all of us to realize the importance of a clean environment. We must not dirty our own surrounding. If we do not check such bad habit, we will be living among the garbage. Our environment will be stinking with foul smell. Flies, rats and insects will spread diseases. In the end it is us who will be at the receiving end and will have to face the consequences. Very soon the landfills will not be able to contain the waste as a result of our irresponsible actions. So act now before it is too late. Think before you throw. Each and everyone of us can do our part in saving our country from being filled with rubbish. Separate the waste into recyclable items such as newspaper, magazines and old books, aluminum cans, plastic bottles and glass bottles. These recyclable items can be sold. Look out for the collection centre in your area. With that, we hope to check and reduce the waste and keep our environment clean and healthy for every one. So, once again Think before you Throw. With that I thank you.
