Time Duration : 1.5 hrs.

What is critical radius of insulation or critical thickness? How it influence the rate of heat transfer? What is lumped heat capacity analysis? What is meant by free or natural convection? Give examples. What is meant by hydrodynamic and thermal boundary layer? Draw different regions of boiling and what is nucleate boiling? What is meant by regenerators? What are the assumptions made to calculate radiation exchange between the surfaces? What is the purpose of radiation shield? What is mass transfer and give its application.

10. What do you understand by steady state molecular diffusion?

PART-B (5X 16=80) 1) (a) Derive the heat conduction equation in cylindrical co-ordinates using an elemental volume for a stationary isotropic solid. (16) Or (b) (i) An aluminium rod (k =204 W/mK) 2 cm in diameter and 20 cm long protrudes from wall which is maintained at 300C. The end of the rod is insulated and the surface of the rod is exposed to air at 30C. The heat transfer coefficient between the rod's surface and air is 10 W/m2K. Calculate the heat lost by the rod and the temperature of the rod at a distance of 10 cm from the wall. (8) (ii) A large iron plate of 10 cm thickness and originally at 800C is suddenly exposed to an environment at 0C where the convection coefficient is 50 W/m 2 K .Calculate the temperature at a depth of 4 cm from one of the faces 100 seconds after the plate is exposed to the environment. How much energy had been lost per unit area of the plate during this time? (8) 2) (a) Cylindrical cans of 150 mm length and 65 mm diameter are to be cooled from an initial temperature of 20C by placing them in a cooler containing air at a temperature of 1C and a pressure of 1 bar. Determine the cooling rates when the cans are kept in horizontal and vertical positions. (16) Or (b) Air at 2 bar pressure and 60C is heated as it flows through a tube of diameter 25 mm at a velocity of 15 m/s. If the wall temperature is maintained at 100C. Find the heat transfer per unit length of the tube. How much would be the bulk temperature increase over one metre length of the tube. (16) 3) (a) Two parallel plates of size 1m x 1m are spaced 0.5 m apart are located in a very large room, the walls of which are maintained at a temperature of 27C. One plate is maintained at a temperature of 900C and the other at 400C. Their emissivities are 0.2 and 0.5 respectively. If the plates exchange heat between themselves and surroundings, find the net heat transfer to each plate and to the room. Consider only the plate surfaces facing each other. (16)

Or (b) Determine the view factor (F14) for the figure. (16)

4)

(a) Steam condenses at atmospheric pressure on the external surface of the tubes of a steam condenser. The tubes are 12 in number and each is 30 mm in diameter and 10 m long. The inlet and outlet temperature of cooling water flowing inside the tubes are 25C and 60C respectively. If the flow rate is 1.1 kg/s, calculate (i) The rate of condensation (ii) The number of transfer units (iii) The effectiveness of the condenser (16)

(b)

(i) Write the types of heat exchangers.

(4)

(ii) A parallel flow heat exchanger is used to cool 4.2 kg/min of hot liquid of specific heat 3.5 kJ/kgK at 130C. A cooling water of specific heat 4.18 kJ/kgK is used for cooling purpose at a temperature of 15C. The mass flow rate of cooling water is 17 kg/min. Calculate the following. (NTU-APPROACH) a. b. c. Outlet temperature of liquid Outlet temperature of water Effectiveness of heat exchanger (12)

5) (a) A mixture of O2 and N2 with their partial pressures in the ratio 0.21 to 0.79 in a container at 25 C. Calculate the molar concentration, the mass density, the mole fraction and the mass fraction of each species for a total pressure of 1 bar. What would be the average molecular weight of the mixture? (16) Or (b) (i) Derive the expression for steady state equimolar counter diffusion. (6)

(ii) Air at 1 atm and 25C containing small quantities of iodine flow with a velocity of 6.2 m/s inside a 35 mm diameter tube. Calculate mass transfer co-efficient for iodine. The thermo-physical properties of air are = 15.5 x 10-6 m2/s D=0.82 x 10-5 m2/s (10)
