About AAMT 2013

Today's world is very technology orient and is slowly evolving in a direction to enable people with disabilities. Having access to technology puts people with disabilities in the mainstream of life, prepares them for employment and interaction, builds their self-confidence, allows them to make choices and exercise control of their options. However, the specialized assistive software/hardware required by some students with disabilities lags behind the technology curve. If the technology designer does not make certain that their new tool will function with existing assistive technologies, then the users of assistive technology fall behind. Also, Assistive technologies are expensive and updating them can create an economic hardship on the user with a disability. The National Conference on Advances in Assistive and Mainstream Technologies for Persons with Special Needs (AAMT 2013) aims to bring together academicians, leading engineers, industry researchers and students to exchange and share their experiences and research results about all aspects of Advances in Assistive and Mainstream Technologies, and discuss the practical challenges encountered and the solutions adopted. The benefits of attending the conference are considerable for established academics and new scientists alike. The participants will get the opportunity to present their research and share it with scientists and academia from all over India. Also, the participants will stay up to date with the latest advances in the field and they will have the chance to discuss possible future collaborations.

About Assistive Technology Lab

Assistive Technology Lab (ATL) works for a very unique and a noble cause of designing projects by the students of SVECW to benefit the differently-abled. This is a small but definite step to mainstream people with disabilities into society. Professor Alan Rux Rux, founder of the Assistive Technology Program at the University of Massachusetts, Lowell, USA, visits SVECW every year in the month of July and guides students in developing projects related to Assistive Technology. ATL provides a rich, authentic learning experience for students, one which allows them to really learn and experience the engineering design process, apply their academic skills in a real-world context, and allows them to develop important workplace skills not usually taught in the classroom. Each project team has to brainstorm and analyze alternative design solutions, and justify their chosen design; they must work within a budget, analyze the cost of various design alternatives, and in the end, make a presentation outlining their design work and final solution.

About the Institute

Shri Vishnu Engineering College for Women (SVECW) was established during academic year 2001-2002 to empower women in professional courses. The college has the vision to develop the students with a disciplined and integrated personality and to achieve academic excellence, thus making SVECW the first choice of students and staff. SVECW has witnessed significant growth within a period of 10 years and stands out as one of the best engineering colleges in AP. In recognition of its progressive strides, the World Bank has granted TEQIP phase II project to SVECW and Indian Merchants Chamber (IMC) recognized with a trophy for the quality of education imparted.

Scope of the Conference

We encourage Engineers, Therapists, Teachers, Social workers, Service providers, Researchers, Manufacturers, End users and all those directly or indirectly involved in the field of Assistive Technology and Mainstream Technology, to participate and contribute to the advancement of this multidisciplinary area, so that outcomes of this Conference will help to improve the quality of life of persons with disabilities and senior citizens older persons in India.
