Plea to help children asli resolve land matters

GEORGE TOWN: In what appears to
be the first case of its kind in the country,
police are appealing to the public to help
10 children who have been left to fend
for themselves after their parents were
detained over the death of their sister.
“We are coordinating with relevant
agencies like the welfare department to
provide care for the children aged bet-
ween three and 17,” Penang CPO Datuk
Ayub Yaakob said.
The children’s father, aged 40, and his
two wives, 31 and 37, were remanded
after the remains of their daughter were
found buried in a field in Bandar Baru
Air Itam here last week.
The seven-year old is believed to have
died two to three years ago after being
beaten by her father.

“We are very concerned about what
will happen to these children,” Ayub told
reporters after visiting the siblings at the
Penang Hospital where one of them has
been admitted for a check-up.
“Just imagine if our parents were
suspected of committing a crime and we
were separated from them,” he said.
Ayub said two other siblings had
already been adopted and another was
being detained by police to help in
investigations.
“We are getting the national registra-
tion department to ensure these children
have the necessary documents to enable
them to go to school and be eligible for
any necessary aid.”
He urged the public to report similar
situations of domestic violence or families
in dire conditions such as poverty.

SHAH ALAM: The Selangor government has
launched an orang asli land task force to help
the community resolve issues pertaining to
ancestral land.

tribe to assist heads of the orang asli in seven
districts in the state.
For now, the task force will focus on getting
land belonging to the community gazetted, and
to seek fair compensation for land taken away

trusting of people, especially those in authority,
and thus they would just agree and go along with
anything, even if it means losing their rights.
“The community will be more comfortable
relating their problems to someone who under-
stands their plight and speaks their language.”
