TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The pilgrim experience of going by foot to Santiago de Compostella, the shrine of St. James, reaches its high point a month from now at the feast of the Apostle. By now, tens of thousands of pilgrims are already on the road. Typically, they cover twelve to twenty miles a day through rough territory. The difficult journey and the often primitive lodging facilities are made bearable by the joy of the pilgrims, their songs and prayers. When their journey is documented properly, they receive the scallop shell, a reminder not only of James the fisherman, but also his call to fish for human beings and to baptize the nations. In the Middle Ages, those who wore this badge on their hats were granted lodging and hospitality wherever they went. Next to the palm, the sign of a Jerusalem pilgrim, the scallop shell was most highly prized. In the Middle Ages, some people so enjoyed the pilgrim road, although it was filled with discomfort and danger, that they spent most of their lives on the road. Today, some people take up the route for exercise, but are drawn gradually into the spirituality of the journey. As you make your summer travels, always fold in an element of pilgrimage: a long walk through beautiful countryside, a visit to a church, a prayer of gratitude for your journey through lifes hills and valleys.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE El ltimo sbado de junio o el primero de julio en un ayuntamiento de Valcidacos, Espaa, se pone en escena el Miserere escrito por Gustavo Adolfo Bcquer (1836-1870). Esta obra relata como un msico llega de noche a la Abada de Fetero pidiendo posada. Los hermanos del monasterio lo invitaron a pasar la noche. All l les cont su vida pecaminosa y su deseo de encontrar un Miserere (Salmo 51) digno de expiar sus pecados ante Dios. Le contaron del Miserere del Monte que cantaban durante la noche los monjes difuntos de un Monasterio que haba sido destruido siglos atrs. El msico afanado por encontrar su Miserere, corri a la montaa donde escuch aquel lamentoso y bello canto. Al regresar a la Abada intent escribir la msica de aquel Miserere, pero lo nico que logro fue volverse loco. Aquel pobre hombre muri sin reconocer que cada quien debe entonar a su manera su propio y pobre Miserere mei (piedad de mi). Dios no nos perdona por la belleza o la fuerza de nuestra confesin, sino por su amor y su misericordia.
