DODSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS awarded to Yonkers Public Schools Graduates Mariah Cameron and Gabriela Mendoza

(June 2013) YONKERS, NY - The Robert C. Dodson Memorial Scholarships, monetary award and certificate, were given to college-bound Yonkers Public Schools 2013 graduates Mariah Cameron, Riverside High School and Gabriela Mendoza, Yonkers High School International Baccalaureate World School. In addition, two 8th grade students at the Robert C. Dodson School, Jemima Morgan and Alejandro Gutierrez, who have the highest scholastic average will receive a Basket of Books and a monetary award at the schools Moving Up ceremony in June. Robert C. Dodson was Assistant Superintendent of Administration for the Elementary Division at the time of his death in May 1988. Throughout his outstanding professional career in the Yonkers Public Schools Mr. Dodson was highly respected and loved by students and staff. Children had a special place in his heart, this was evident in each position he held; music teacher, principal, and central office administrator. Further evidence of his impact on the Yonkers community was the naming of the Robert C. Dodson School, 105 Avondale Road in Yonkers, in his memory. The Robert C. Dodson Memorial scholarships are awarded to graduating seniors from Yonkers Public Schools who are pursuing post high school education. Students have to demonstrate an interest in the visual or performing arts, as well as leadership ability. Additionally, students interested in teaching as a profession are encouraged to apply. Applicants submit their transcript, letter(s) of recommendation and a one page statement outlining their goals or aspirations, a significant experience in their lives or a topic that they consider important. Mariah Cameron will attend St. Johns University, College of Professional Studies majoring in the field of Communication Arts and film. Mariah was awarded the first place scholarship of $1,000.00. Ranked 11th in her class, Mariah was selected for her commitment to performing arts as a dancer and thespian, as well as her scholastic achievement. Though I love to be on stage and on screen, my real passion is being back stage, and behind the lens because there you can teach and encourage someone else in the craft, emoted Mariah in her personal statement. She received this award for her commitment to personally invest in the next generation and because she understands the connection between continuing her education and fulfilling her dream.

Gabriela Mendoza is an accomplished artist who received the second place scholarship of $500.00 to support her tuition at the College of Mount Saint Vincent, Division of Natural Sciences majoring in Biology. In her personal statement that reflected on topics of social barriers, adversities and optimism, she noted, By excelling in science, Ill also expand possibilities for female minorities. Gabrielas simple tools: hardship and ambition, and nurture it with heart and inspiration, will morph her career goals and already recognized artistic talents into lifelong success.
