I recognize the tentativeness
and worry in the caller’s voice. I’ve
heard it a thousand times. “I’m
worried about my son,” the caller
says to me.
She goes on to describe his
symptoms and the reason for her
concern. The cause of her tone,
at least in part, is the haunting
question - “Should I be worried
about my child? Parents are often
unsure when a problem is serious
enough to seek professional help.
Presented below are four questions
that I ask myself when trying to
determine whether or not a child
needs professional help.
My first point of concern with
any mental health issue is one’s
ability to function. I ask the ques-
tion, “How much does the thing
that is concerning the parent
inhibit the child’s ability to do
the things he needs and wants to
do?” If the answer is “minimally”
or “not at all,” then the problem
may not warrant professional help.
Suppose you are afraid of snakes
— “ophidiophobia” or technically
“Specific Phobia — animal sub-
type.” This phobia is classifiable
as a mental health disorder, but
so what. If you can get out of bed,
go to work, do your family busi-
ness, sleep OK and eat OK, then so
what if you have a diagnosis? With
children, I’m most concerned when
their issues are creating noticeable
problems with siblings, parents,
teachers, or peers, or in specific en-
vironments (home, school, church,

Many of the symptoms associ-

tion Syndrome. This syndrome
refers to the condition where the
two halves of the brain - the right
and left hemispheres - are not
communicating with each other
normally. The normal develop-
ment and flow of communication
across the brain is disrupted.

tionally disconnected. The goal
of the Brain Balance Achievement
Program is to correct the commu-
nication breakdown between the
two hemispheres of the brain. It
is this fundamental brain imbal-
ance that results in the range of
negative symptoms and behav-
iors exhibited by children.”
The Brain Balance program
is the only program designed to
assess, document and objectively
quantify Functional Disconnec-
tion Syndrome through the use
of extensive testing in all areas
of function, followed by indi-
vidualized programs to improve
functions. Brain Balance utilizes
their proprietary model to first as-
sess a child’s functioning in 1200
parameters that fall within three
areas: 1) sensorimotor, 2) neuro-
academic and 3) bio-nutritional.
They then meet with the parents
and provide them with an easy to
follow, comprehensive report that
not only explains which functions
of the brain are weak and strong,
but also rates that functioning
on five achievement levels and
reports which hemisphere of the
brain needs to be stimulated in
order to raise that functioning.
Brain Balance works to “puts
kids back in sync” with an inte-
grated program that does not rely
on drugs, medical procedures or
psychotherapy.
“Since balance is the essence
of our program, we also ensure
that each child progresses in a
symmetrical way,” Dr. Scire says.
