Linear Algebra: MAT 2233.

01F Summer 2013

Instructor: Dr. Weiming Cao Office: MS 3.03.06 Phone: 458-7327 E-mail: wcao@math.utsa.edu Web: http://www.math.utsa.edu/~wcao/teaching Lectures: MTWRF 9:15am-10:45am (MS 2.02.53) Office Hours: MWF 11:00am-12:00pm, or by appointment. Prerequisite: MAT 1224 (Calculus II) or EGR 2323 (Applied Engineering Analysis I) Course Objectives: To learn the basic concepts and techniques in linear algebra, including linear spaces, linear transformations, matrices, determinants, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, and reduction to canonical forms, with emphasis on applications. Course Outline: We shall cover mainly chapters 1 through 4 and chapters 6 and 7. Examinations: 1. Quizzes: Quizzes will be given twice a week in class. Each takes about 15 minutes. They are based on lectures and home work assignments. 2. Two midterm tests (in class): June 14 (Friday); June 28 (Friday) 3. Final exam: July 10 (Wednesday), 7:30am-10:00am Homework: A list of homework assignments is attached at the end of this syllabus. Doing homework is a very important part in the learning process of this course. Quizzes, midterms and the final are closely related to it. Home work will be collected at the mid term tests and final exam. Extra credits (up to 5 points in total) will be given according to the completeness and tidiness of your work. Grading Scheme: 1: Quizzes: The average (with 2 lowest dropped) counts for 15%; 2: Two midterm tests: each counts for 25%; 3: Final exam counts for 35%; Final Letter Grade: A: 100-90, B: 89-80, C: 79-70, D: 69-60, F: 59-0 Note: Instructor reserves the right to perform suitable scaling of the test scores when circumstances warrant. Attendance Policy: Your regular attendance is mandatory. The attendance record will be considered in assigning the course letter grade if the weighted average score is near the border line. Keep in mind that in summer sessions regular course materials are concentrated in a much shorter time frame. You are required to commit intensive efforts and extensive time for the course work.

Make-up policy: There will be no make-up for any missing quizzes or midterm tests. If one midterm is missed for medical or other reasons beyond a student's control (verifiable), then the final exam score may be used to replace the missing score. Make-up final exam is given only under extenuating circumstances and is typically more difficult. Those who have to write a later final must discuss with the instructor before the exam time. UTSA Academic Honor Code will be strictly enforced. Important Dates: June 6 (Thursday): Census day; July 3 (Wednesday): Last day to drop a course via asap with grade "W". Homework questions:
