NFPA Classification Of Substances Reactivity (Nr)

(See Dow F&EI Booklet, p-11, 13 and 19)

Basis = NFPA 325M The reactivity value (Nr) can be obtained from a qualitative description of the instability (or reactivity with water) of the substance, mixture, or compound at ambient temperature, as follows: Nr Value Description 0 Substance Completely stable, even when heated under fire conditions. 1 Mild reactivity upon heating with pressure. 2 Significant reactivity, even without heating or pressure. 3 Detonation possible with confinement. 4 Detonation possible without confinement. Basis: NFPA 325M or NFPA 49 Nf Value 0 1 2 3 4 Flash Point (FL Pt.) by closed cup method. Boiling Point (BP) at Standard Pressure = 14.7 psia

Flammability (Nf)

Description Non-combustible FL Pt. > 200F FL Pt. >= 100F and FlP < 200F FL Pt. < 100F and BP >= 100F FL Pt. < 73F and BP < 100F

Flammability No. 1 2 3 4 5 6

Basis: National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health - 1990 (NIOSH) NIOSH Class 1A 1B 1C 11 111A 111B BP = Description FL Pt = Flamm Liquid / FL Pt. < 73F and BP < 100F / Equivalent to NFPA Nf = 4 Flammable Liquid / FL Pt. < 73F and BP >= 100F Flammable Liquid / FL Pt. = or > 73F and FL Pt. < 100F Combustible Liquid / FL Pt. = or > 100F and FL Pt. < 140F Combustible Liquid / FL Pt. = > 140F and FL Pt. < 200F Combustible Liquid / FL Pt. = > 200F NIOSH No. = 177.29 -4 2

Health (Nh)

Basis: NFPA 704 or given in NFPA 325M or NFPA 49 Nh Value Description 0 No hazard beyond that of ordinary combustibles 1 Only minor residual injury is likely 2 Prompt medical attention required to avoid temporary incapacitation. 3 Materials causing serious temporary or residual injury. 4 Short exposures cause death or major injury. Note: These factors are intended to represent emergency response limitations which can cause additional loss. They are not intended to be applied as Industrial Hygiene or Environmental considerations.
