Call for Papers: Design, Mediation, and the Posthuman We invite submissions for an edited anthology exploring the

disciplinary intersections of object design, technologies of mediation, and the posthuman. Deadline: Abstracts of 500 words should be submitted by March 30, 2012. Notifications will be made by early May with final drafts of submissions due by September 30, 2012. Please include a short biographical statement with abstracts. In the early, heady days of the Internet, there was much talk about moving from the offline world to the online world. From fanboys to cybertheorists, we were witnessing, we were told, the demassification of culture in which life would be increasingly lived online and the offline world, the world of things, wouldnt matter much. In their 1994 preamble to Cyberspace and the American Dream: A Magna Carta for the Knowledge Age, cyberlibertarians Esther Dyson, George Gilder, George Keyworth nicely articulated this early Internet dream: The central event of the 20th century is the overthrow of matter. In technology, economics, and the politics of nations, wealth -- in the form of physical resources -- has been losing value and significance. The powers of mind are everywhere ascendant over the brute force of things. Something strange happened on the way to the 21st century, though, and things seem to be making a comeback. In Jane Bennetts efforts in Vibrant Matter to challenge the view of matter as passive and inert, Bruno Latours constitution of a parliament of things, Bill Browns theorizing of things, we see across a variety of discourses and disciplines a renewed effort to come to terms with the brute force of things. Literary theorists, digital humanists, rhetoricians, and philosophers of technology are paying more attention to the designed environment, the manner in which technology and artifacts mediate human relations, and the constitution of a posthuman world in which the boundary between the human world and the world of things has imploded. Simultaneously, though, new questions arise as to the extent to which we should embrace the

symmetry of humans and artifacts, a world in which artifacts are designed to dovetail with human interests and capacities and in which the central tenets of humanism and anthropocentrism are questioned and rejected. Even former proponents of cybertheory such as Jaron Lanier and Sherry Turkle are rethinking their earlier positions on technology in light of the ways in which the design of technologies increasingly lends them important mediating roles which potentially undermine the distinctive nature of the human being. In this regard, the title of Lanier's (the inventor of VR) recent book You Are Not a Gadget flies in the face of more recent efforts to theorize technology and design in such a way as to undermine the once firm distinction between the human and the artifact or the human and technology, presaging the arrival of the posthuman. As advances in design and technology result in increasingly engaging artifacts that mediate more and more aspects of our life, it is appropriate to engage in a systematic, interdisciplinary, critical examination of the intersection of the domains of design, technical mediation, and the posthuman. Design, Mediation, and the Posthuman is conceived itself as an anthology engaging in a project of mediation by which diverse disciplines come together to contribute to a dialogue on some of the significant issues raised by the intersection of design, mediation, and the posthuman. This edited anthology will consist of three central sections on (1) historical contexts and precedents; (2) the design of actual gadgets and artifacts; and (3) the theoretical frameworks of assessing and evaluating these developments. Topics may include, but are not limited to: Humanism and anthropocentrism in a world of relational artifacts The place of the human being in technologically mediated environments Moving from a demassified culture to a culture of things and artifacts The resurgence of materiality and things in a posthuman world The posthuman at the nexus of design culture and technologies of mediation The value of things in a posthuman device culture (Albert Borgmann and philosophy of technology) The symmetry thesis and the status of the human being

Please submit abstracts of 500 words and a short biographical statement to Amy Propen (apropen@ycp.edu) or Colbey Reid (creid@ycp.edu) or Dennis Weiss (dweiss@ycp.edu) by March 30, 2012. Essays appearing in the anthology will average 3,000-6,000 words. MLA style should be used where citation is required. Notification of acceptance will be given by early May. Completed chapters will be due by September 30, 2012.
