Poetry Anthology As a culminating task for this unit, you will create an anthology to demonstrate your knowledge and

understanding of the elements of poetry, as well as your ability to make inferences and analyse complex texts. An anthology is a collection of literary work (literally, anthology means flower-gathering).The most important piece of criteria you should use in selecting a poem for your anthology should be the connection you make with the poem. Choose pieces that speak to you. Choose pieces that are meaningful to you. Choose pieces that you find beautiful or wonderful. Apart from that, try to base your poetry selections around a specific theme or idea. Here are some suggestions for you: Themes: war, death, beauty, love, the divine, time, art, appearance versus reality Forms: sonnets, dramatic monologues, ballads, odes, elegies, spoken word Components of the anthology: A minimum of ten poems collected in published format. o this may take the form of a binder, portfolio, or scrapbook o Optionally, if you may substitute one original poem modeled on one of the poems selected for your anthology that fits the theme or topic. o or you may choose to create a digital anthology. There are a number of different applications you could use for this. See your teacher if you are interested. For one of the poems, include a written explication. o Your analysis should be at least 1 page typed double-spaced. For two of your poems, include a Venn Diagram that compares and contrasts Supporting visuals. o Pair your poems with visuals that support or enhance your understanding of the poems. These may be original pieces of art or borrowed visuals (provided that you give the creator credit). Please include a brief explanation of how the visuals you chose support and enhance your understanding of the poem. o If you are choosing the digital version, you may choose to use music as well to support and enhance your presentation of the poems (again, please include a brief explanation). o Choose effective fonts and layout for your presentation. Works Cited Page. o You must use credible sources for selecting your poetry (sorry, not your best friends myspace page). o You must create a works cited page to credit the authors of the poems. Use MLA format for this. Note about song lyrics: While poetry is sometimes set to music and song lyrics can have poetic characteristics, songs and poems are not the same thing. Some might argue that talking about a song without talking about the music is like talking about a painting without talking about use of colour. One or two of your poems may be song lyrics but be cautious about choosing them and check with your teacher.
