This site will allow us to compost food scraps and turn them into rich, organic soil. Every year, Wisconsin produces 500,000 tons of waste, which includes food that could be used as compost. ing all five of us siblings of her skin cancer diagnosis and imploring each of us to make an appointment for a screening. Growing up on a farm, we had extensive exposure to the sun on a daily basis. Back then, skin protection was not the hot topic it is today. Considering that our father and one brother both had suspicious growths removed as well, we are thankful that we are all currently in the clear and are more keenly aware of the danger. July is UV Safety Month a perfect time to schedule a screening and to reinforce your efforts to protect yourself and your family from too much sun exposure. It is a fact: studies have linked overexposure to the sun with skin cancer. In addition, according to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, The harmful ultraviolet rays from both the sun and indoor tanning sunlamps can cause many other complications besides skin cancer such as eye problems, a weakened immune system, age spots, wrinkles and leathery skin. The need to take protective measures from the sun is quite clear today. Experts advise that we: Avoid the sun at its strongest. Wear proper clothing. Avoid getting burned. Go for the shade. Use extra caution when near reflective surfaces. Use extra caution when at higher altitudes. Apply and re-apply broad-spectrum sunscreen/sunblock. Our authors are also passionate about sharing some healthy living information with you. Karen Block reminds us of the importance of adequate sleep for our mental and physical well-being. Kristina Amelong educates us about detoxing, or cleansing, in order to eliminate the build up of toxins from our bodies. Jill Greinke

How to choose a massage therapist

our best friend tells you, You have to try my massage therapist. She/he is the best! So, on your friends advice, you go in and spend $70 for an hour massage. During the massage, the pressure is too much (or maybe too little) and after the hour is over you leave feeling more stressed or frustrated because you did not get the massage you wanted. Why? Your friend said she/he was fantastic? What most people dont realize is that massage is a personal experience. There are as many preferences when it comes to massage as there are people and types of massage. Some clients want very light pressure, candles, music, soft sheets and a dark room. They want their massage therapist to silently give them their treatment and then extra time to relax on the table afterward. Others have a specific goal in mind. They have an injury or a specific issue that they want taken care of and their surroundings are not a priority. Its not that any of those approaches are wrong, they are just different. So, how do you find out which massage therapist is the one for you? First, you need to determine the type of massage you are interested in. There are many different types of massage therapy out there, so do a bit of research online. Maybe you prefer the experience of a relaxing light-pressure massage with aromatherapy and scented oil or lotion. Or maybe you prefer a good deep-tissue massage to work out the knots, aches and pains. You should also

consider what effort you want to put into the experience. This can range from a very passive role to actually being involved in big stretches and active movement to loosen joints and limbs. Once you have a good idea of what type of massage you are looking for, search for an independent massage therapist who is certified in that particular technique. Call those qualified individuals and ask questions. The person on the phone should be more than willing to answer your queries and concerns, and let you know if they are the right massage therapist for you. Some massage therapists will happily change their style to accommodate you. Other therapists may refer you to someone else that may better suit your needs. The important thing is that when you make your appointment, all your questions have been answered, and you feel comfortable with the decision you have made. Once the massage is in session, please keep in mind that you have control over how it goes. Tell the massage therapist if you want more or less pressure. Also, do not be afraid to let your therapist know if they are talking too much! Remember that you are paying them for your experience, so make it work for you. Once your massage is completed, you can then decide whether or not that massage was what you expected. You might have to try several different massage therapists before finding one that meets your needs. I am always surprised when I hear someone say, Ive been seeing my massage therapist for years but she/he never really works the areas I want her/him to. As massage therapists, we love customer loyalty, but there is no reason to continue with a therapist that does not address your needs. Every massage therapist takes something different from their education and adds something to what they learned to make it their own. That can range from crystals to deep stretches. We all have our different styles and approaches. So dont fret! Do some research, ask questions and be honest with your massage therapist. Somewhere out there is an independent massage therapist that is right for you!

Be still and feed your soul

Grace is the voice that calls us to change and gives us the power to pull it off.  Max Lucado, Grace hen I was at a workshop about dream manifestation this past month, the person giving the workshop gave each of us participants a Grace Card from Cheryl Richardsons set of Grace Cards A 50 Card Deck. The workshop leader let us know she hoped the cards would set a tone for each person and help each of us break the ice to open up spiritually. She also wanted the cards to act as tools that would help us manifest our own hopes and dreams in essence, to find ways to create positive changes to our lives. One of the participants expressed that she was not really familiar with spiritual messages presented in the Grace Cards. She still went ahead and chose a card after the facilitator let her know it was OK if she chose not to. The facilitator also expressed to the group that the term spiritual means different things to different people. She explained that every person present needed to find a place within themselves where they could go to receive their own inner guidance and to open up to new ideas that would be given in the workshop later on that day. When you lose touch with inner stillness, you lose touch with yourself. When you lose touch with yourself, you lose yourself in the world.  Eckhart Tolle, Stillness Speaks The rest of the participants chose their cards. I did the same. The card I pulled said: Soul practice good soul care. The quality of our outer life is always dependent on the quality of care we give to our soul. When I read my card out loud, a woman who came to the workshop to learn how to manifest a new corporate position, made a comment that she was open to my cards suggestion, but she wanted to know just how she should go about doing it. What a great question, especially for all of us living in times when our outer, fast-paced and noisy world seems to counter any chance of us getting in touch with our still world. The card I pulled indicated what many spiritual authors and leaders have expressed: despite the seemingly endless things going on around us, we need to go inward in order to open up to grace, abundance, health and peace. To do so we first need to become silent and still. We have to slow down our minds in order to feel the benefit of getting in touch with our inner guidance the whispers of our spirit instructing us with the things we need to do in order to maintain a healthy soul. Yet many people today believe that getting still and quiet is easier said than done. One of my colleagues recently sent me a quote by Someecards posted on Pinterest: Men: If you ever wanna know what a womans mind feels like, imagine a browser with 2,857 tabs open. All. The. Time. I laughed out loud when I read it because I believe that to be completely true. And though this statement was geared towards women, I think it is safe to say that both men and women feel this way on a regular basis. In that case, it appears to be within our best interest to work towards what the experts have suggested: finding ways to be silent and still in order to foster our inner guidance. To get in touch with our spirit, it takes daily intention and inspired action on our part. In order to do that, we need to close as many of our mental (browser) tabs as possible. We can start small with a block of 3-5 minutes of quiet time in the morning and in the evening. It is essential that we find a method to focus our minds on during each block of time. One method is to turn our attention to our breathing. We can do this by counting to three in our heads during each inhale and each exhale. Another way to focus is to have a cup of tea and stare at a physical object, such as a candle. We can use any simple little object in place of the candle as long as we set the intention to quiet our minds down by focusing. These focusing exercises: 1) guide us to more inspired ways of finding inner peace; 2) nurture our soul; and 3) give us the power to make healthy changes in our lives. Here is to feeding our souls!

Understand and help your holistic veterinarian

olistic is an umbrella term that refers to the consideration of the mind, body and spirit of the patient. There can be many modalities under this holistic umbrella. Even a surgeon can practice holistically. An allopathic surgeon might repair a broken bone and send his patient on his way. A holistic surgeon will concern himself with the rehabilitation of his patient and even the emotional toll that this hardship has caused the individual and his family. A holistic practitioner has many tools in his or her tool box from which to choose to manage a patients case. Not all holistic practitioners are the same. All holistic veterinarians have graduated from a conventional four-year veterinary school and have attained a doctor of veterinary medicine degree. Most have an undergraduate degree in addition. This amounts to eight years of college. However, a holistic veterinarian has pursued additional course work in a particular area of focus. Many have become certified in veterinary acupuncture, veterinary spinal manipulative therapy, Chinese herbology or food therapy. What all of these practitioners have in common is the breadth of knowledge of animal anatomy and physiology, and animal disease, that is not covered if

one has studied only the human coursework for a given modality. It is not legal in the state of Wisconsin for a non-veterinarian to practice medicine, diagnosis or treat animal disease. In conventional practice, a veterinarians bread and butter consists of the rapidity of office visits for vaccinations. Most holistic veterinarians strongly believe in a reduced vaccination protocol and titre testing. Because titre testing often proves that patients are protected longer, repetitive vaccinations and repetitive titre testing become very unnecessary. This is good medicine, but loss of income for an ethical holistic practitioner. This makes it more difficult for a holistic practice to stay in business. Todays humane societies and shelters have pushed for earlyage spaying and neutering of our pets. Many of these facilities have low-cost spay/neuter clinics within their facilities. What this means for the local vets is less income from spays and neuters in their practices. Some holistic vets are particularly concerned in that the opportunity to counsel clients as to the benefits and risks of spaying or neutering their pets is no longer possible. Indeed there may be some benefits to altering a pet, but there are also some conditions, including some cancers, which are more prevalent in altered pets. It disturbs holistic veterinarians that a client-patient relationship and consultation is by-passed in the rush to alter pets before they have a forever guardian. What sets apart most holistic veterinarians from conventional is the amount of time spent with the pet during a visit. All veterinarians are trained to perform thorough physical examinations, but holistic vets like to do massages and essential oils applications, and have lengthy conversations with guardians about nutrition and home environment. Clients appreciate in-depth explanation, and because holistic care is often unique, detailed explanations of options are often necessary. Holistic clinic staff members utilize a different skill set as well. Receptionists are commonly expected to explain utilization of

Ragnar, the Viking, needs a coach!

ometimes life lessons can be found in unlikely places. The Vikings television show on the History Channel has some fascinating examples of the importance of emotional intelligence! The hero is a gung-ho guy named Ragnar. Ragnar is an intrapreneur. An intrapreneur is an employee who shows qualities of an entrepreneur: has lots of initiative and creativity, is a risk taker, is opinionated and thinks outside the box. You would think most managers would be thrilled with an employee like this, but this is not always the case. Some may feel threatened or disrespected. This is certainly the case with Ragnars boss, the Earl Haraldson! One of the early episodes has several examples where having emotional intelligence skills, knowledge of social styles and awareness of employee engagement concepts could have made a difference. In this episode, Ragnar is at a staff meeting where planning is being done for the upcoming plundering season. Basically, he stepped in it. In addition, his boss reacted poorly to his employees demonstration of initiative. Dont make the mistakes Ragnar and Earl Haraldson made! Ragnar assumed that his initiative would be appreciated. In a meeting, he challenged Earl Haraldsons old idea that they go east to plunder same old, same old! He believed there were greater opportunities west. It had never

been done before. Earl Haraldson was not only skeptical, but chastised Ragnar for challenging his authority in front of the other staff. He ordered him to comply. Or else! Ragnar went west anyway and came back with great treasure that he proudly presented to his boss. He made the assumption that the earl would forgive the transgression as the outcome was so beneficial for the company and for the

How I found my calling

n the summer of 2003, I found myself sitting in the financial aid office of a massage school. Looking past the woman rattling off numbers and interest rates, and gazing at the sunkissed land and crystalline blue waters characteristic to the Gulf Coast, I found myself having absolutely no idea what this woman was talking about. Why do you want to be a massage therapist? What a question to snap me back into the reality of her confined walls. Looking up at the anatomy posters, I was reminded of why I was there. Well, I guess I dont really want to be one, I responded to the president of this small coastal career college who entered the room like a ninja in the darkness. I just want to help people and I thought this would be a good start. The president stood there in her perfectly pressed business suit looking at me in contemplation for a few seconds. Then her lips pursed and curled into a smile as she replied with ambivalence, I guess thats good enough for us. That day marked the very shaky and unsure first steps of one of the most incredible journeys of my life. It also gave birth to my bittersweet love affair with natural and allopathic medicine. If that last sentence seems controversial, my hope is that one day it may no longer be. Throughout my career, I have come across hundreds, maybe thousands, of patients, colleagues, friends and acquaintances who find the need to define themselves as an advocate of one or the other. For some reason, in our culture, we have attempted to divide these branches of medicine so much so that we feel we need field soldiers to constantly slay each other. To me, the two have always been two halves of a greater whole. As an acupuncturist, I would best describe these two seemingly opposite approaches to health as a perfect example of yin and yang. I believe that, just as yin and yang, they cannot exist without each other; that they are, in fact, codependent, and if you look deep enough into either scope, eventually you will find a spark of the other. Its the perfect marriage of two complementary yet opposite pairs; soul mates, if you will. Looking back again to my massage school days, it was in the early days of my education that the roots for my previously mentioned belief took shape. We were lucky enough to have an eclectic group of instructors. The ones that resonated with me on the deepest level were: a Native American medicine woman named Tasa (meaning lightning strikes); a chiropractor named Christian, who, although he was strongly science minded, urged me to pursue acupuncture and eventually wrote the recommendation letter that gained me

entrance into the masters program for Oriental medicine; and a physical therapist with crazy spiked hair and exuberance for life that was just infectious. These mentors helped my young mind take shape and allowed me to challenge their ideas and develop my own theories. It was Tasas intuition, Christians mind and the crazy-haired physical therapists excitement that ignited the fire inside me that burns as a beacon for education and health today. I tell my students that back in 2003 my anatomy teacher told me that in 10 years medicine as we knew it would be changing and that it was us sitting in that very classroom at that very moment that would most accurately reflect that change. He explained that Massage Therapists were the perfect storm. With the understanding of anatomy, physiology and kinesiology and the energetics of touch and intention they are perfect catalyst for healing. Today, massage therapists are no longer only in spas. They are found in hospitals, PT clinics, chiropractic offices, acupuncture offices, hospitals and the list goes on and on. The benefits of massage therapy are widely accepted and, thanks to Tiffany Fields and the Touch Research Institute (Miami, Fla.), have been extensively researched and documented. Massage therapy is an excellent career for those who have an innate desire to help others, a scientific mind and an intuitive nature. An education in massage therapy serves as the perfect beginning for those who wish to go even deeper into more advanced clinical practices, as I did with acupuncture. The understanding of the human form and of its movements that was gained during those infantile days of my education has propelled my clinical practice forward with explosive momentum. That understanding gave me a solid foundation and still helps me interpret my findings today. After an additional eight years in graduate and post graduate education, I still find myself relying deeply on this knowledge. I will be forever grateful for the day that I unwillingly ended up in that coastal career college, staring at the vast horizon and committing to start my career in medicine by becoming a massage therapist.

supplements, treats or natural foods. This takes time away from basic duties, such as making appointments! Pets are rarely sedated for minor procedures as is common in a conventional practice, so veterinary assistants are unusually skilled and patient with unique and compassionate forms of animal restraint. This all takes more time. Certified technicians spend their days performing conventional tasks such as anesthetic monitoring, surgical prep, and sample collection and analysis, but are also pulled in multiple directions to perform laser therapy, assist with acupuncture or give a massage. It is important that pet parents who seek holistic care are cognizant of these differences and understand how this may impact the ability of the doctor and staff to deliver the desired service, as well as the costs involved with a visit. Remember, when you seek your veterinarians advice regarding nutrition or supplements, and then purchase the product elsewhere, you are not honoring that vets education and efforts, nor are you helping that local practice stay in business. When you want to start out right with natural care for a new puppy or kitten, or for a pet with a difficult-to-manage chronic disorder, you will want to know that your holistic vet has been able to afford to stay in business!

Is there a proper protocol to follow when weight training?

here is often confusion about how to train for optimal performance, whether it be for sports performance, rehabilitation or just wanting to get back into shape. The National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) states that for proper adaptation and efficiency to occur, one must follow the structure of correction exercises first, stability second, endurance third, strength fourth and lastly, power. There are many reasons gym goers will start an exercise regimen: to achieve certain results like lowering cholesterol, blood pressure or body fat; for more aesthetic factors like getting bigger biceps or a more defined abdominal region; or for performance factors such as greater strength and/or power, or being able to run for longer distances. These are all wonderful goals, but they mean nothing if your body cannot function properly or avoid/recover from an injury. If one follows the structure listed below, the body will be what I like to call primed and, therefore, a foundation is set within your body for optimal functioning with decreased risk of injury.

The body produces movement patterns for everything we do in life, and most times it is faulty in some way, shape or form.
For some, the confusion comes when discussing the bottom, or most important phases. We often associate the words corrective and stabilization with injury, or rehabilitation situations. Keep in mind that you do not necessarily need to be injured to actually need these phases of exercise. By addressing the corrective and stabilization phases, you are merely trying to teach the body correct movement patterns, and create a foundation for the small muscles within the body (stabilizers). Once this foundation is in place, your body will be more willing to accept more forces, and the strength will follow. You will have a higher possibility of injuring yourself or getting injured if these phases are overlooked. Think of it this way: Your body and all its structural makeup is like a car. In order for your car to function properly, it needs an engine (power phase), a strong foundation or chassis (this would represent the muscles in your body, and therefore be the strength phase), and gas (endurance phase). You have heard that oil is your cars lifeline. The oil represents the stability phase. Now, in order for the car to move, it needs wheels. The wheels are the corrective phase.

Ground yourself by coming into your root chakra

ur root chakra, meaning wheel of light/energy center, is our first chakra. It is also known as the Muladhara, which literally means foundation or root (Mul means base and Adhara means support), and resides at the base of the spine. The Muladhara correlates with the adrenals. The release of adrenaline prepares us to react or act in any situation. This activation of fight or flight is brought on by real or imagined danger. The adrenals are the bodys call to battle; the need to be grounded and secure goes hand-in-hand with our ability to soundly react to what is going on in front of us. When our root chakra is unbalanced, we may see physical, emotional, mental or spiritual symptoms calling us back to our bodies three-dimensionally, to seek balance and grounding. Constipation is often a symptom of a blocked root; others include struggles with weight to the point of obesity and issues or ailments related to the legs or knees. They are asking us if we are able to stand on our own two feet. Those who struggle or suffer skeletal or sacral issues are often energetically asked to seek balance in the root chakra. Other issues of imbalance can manifest as feelings of hopelessness, anxiety, phobias or disconnection. When we are financially troubled, materialistic, greedy or resistant to change, it is time to look at our root. Take a moment and self reflect. We can often feel defensive when we are confronted with the reality of what is really holding us back, so take a moment and make note of the above, and meditate on where that is all coming from. When balanced, our root chakra holds a foundation of security, safety, order and routine. Muladhara offers us nurturance, a sense of organization and honesty; we become flexible and responsible with our own being and those around us.

How can I help balance my root chakra?

Crystals and stones like jasper, clear quartz, tigers eye, hema-

tite, smoky quartz or bloodstone all help those with root chakra imbalances to seek alignment. Aromatherapy using scents that create security, stability and grounding like cedar, sandalwood and cinnamon can help. Food like root plants, whole grains, dairy, minerals, calcium and nuts all help create a sense of grounding and nurturance. Commune with nature: When is the last time you walked barefoot or laid in the grass? Take time with nature to help grow your roots back where they belong. In balancing this chakra, it is important to focus on the relationship with the individual self. Who are you? When is the last time you did something for you, something to nourish your entire being? The vowel sound oh correlates with our root chakra a sense of letting go and coming into the self. We often use this sound to create a sense of release. Try verbally releasing the sound oh whenever you need a moment to just drop baggage and come back to yourself again. Also consider chanting lam (long a) 108 times to help gain a greater sense of grounding and balance in your root chakra. Use this chant in your meditation or yoga practice to enhance your experience and need to be in your root chakra. The verb I have directly correlates with Muladhara; when is the last time you used this phrase? When is the last time you allowed yourself to have strength, have health, have security? Many of us feel the need to live in lack (often trained from early on to live this way). This martyr syndrome often stems from the root chakra. Tap into your own unique honesty and see what needs to surface. Then

Yin yang energies

hat is yin yang? Well, I am not a linguist, nor do I speak ancient Mandarin, but here it what Ive learned. Some 5,000 years ago, the ancient Shaolin priests noticed that the hands and feet of aging women were in general cooler than those of men the same age. Since then, the cool energies have been dubbed as feminine and the warm energies as masculine. It was not intended to distinguish the differences between the sexes, nor was it intended to judge good or bad. Over centuries, the meaning of words and phrases take on different meanings. A good example is the word fear. When one hears the word fear one perceives terror. Two thousand years ago it meant to stand in awe. So, if one were to read a 2,000-year-old document on the subject of fear, one would believe the document was describing terror, when in fact it is describing awe. Today, in the Western world, yin yang has for the most part become male and female, having more to do with describing the sexes. Male energies are being described as bad and the feminine energies as good. Over the last 20 years, I have seen the newest interpretation hijacked and twisted to the point that it is now being used to divide brother and sister. Earlier this year, a homeopathic doctor recommended to a client that she set up an appointment with me. She told her that she had taken her as far as she could, that I had excellent success with others suffering the same affliction and that she knew of no one else that she trusted to get the job done. She called to set an appointment. After putting her on the calendar, she asked, Isnt there a woman healer I can see? Your doctor sent you my way because she knows I have the knowledge and experience, and that I get the desired benefits, I said. I need feminine energy, she shouted. Not that nasty male energy you carry. I replied, Do you want to be healed? If you do, I can help you. If it will make you feel more at ease, I will make sure my female apprentice is in the room at all times. Will that help you be more comfortable? Ok, she agreed.

Later, she called and cancelled her appointment, telling the clerk that the nasty male energy cannot heal her. (This person described herself as being open-minded, compassionate, spiritual and somewhat enlightened.) Two weeks later, her doctor called me. She told me that the client was very upset. She didnt understand why she needed to come to me. She needed feminine energy like hers (indicating the doctor) or even that of my wife, who is not a healer. The doctor laughed, not at the client, but rather at her statement describing the doctors and my wifes energy as feminine. You see, the doctor and my wife are very good friends, and they are both businesswomen in Wisconsin. Successful businesswomen in Wisconsin are tough. For instance, when my wife and I opened our store, I was having a hard time with one of our vendors. I told him we needed to resolve the situation that day, or I would be forced to turn it over to Jane, my wife. One man laughed and asked if he was supposed to be afraid. I said, Yes! So I turned it over to Jane. After Jane had a conversation with him on the phone, one-sided I may add, he became more like an agreeable pet. You see, when male/female energy is described, it has nothing to do with what sex the body it omits from is. Male energy is aggressive. Female energy is nurturing. Today, most men and women use male energy. Less than 10 percent of people use the feminine energies outside of the family. It makes no difference if one is male or female; we all have the feminine and masculine, the yin and the yang.

As you can see, all of the cars essentials that make it function are all linked together. A car is only as good as its individual pieces. If one piece is missing or working in a subpar fashion, the link is or will be broken (in this case stranded on the road). Many people would argue what the most important part of the car is, but in reality none of them are important if the car does not have wheels. The engine can have 500 horsepower, the oil can be the best there is, the chassis can be rock solid and the gas tank can be on full, but if your car has no wheels, youre not going anywhere! The corrective phase is your bodys wheels. It is the part of the car we often take for granted, and many times even forget completely about. It is imperative that in order to get the most out of your body and its long-lasting performance, you must get a set of good tires. If you are currently injured, find a therapist to get your body back on track. If you are unsure of where to start and what exercises are most beneficial in the beginning to create the foundation for optimal performance, work with a certified personal trainer who understands how to properly train muscles to work together synergistically to avoid injury, while at the same time improving performance.

At Growing Power, we focus all of our efforts on fulfilling this aspect of our mission: to provide equal access to healthy, high-quality safe and affordable food for people in all communities. This time of year, we are growing a lot of organic and nutrient-rich food on over 200 acres of land in and around Milwaukee. We distribute it in a variety of ways, including strategic farm stands throughout the city (see right). Come visit us! Helping provide access to good food is only part of what we do. I strongly believe in passing on the knowledge and knowhow of growing your own food and building your own local food system. Growing Power has offered training and education for the past twenty years, and in 2008, we helped start the national network, Growing Food and Justice for All Initiative, to collaborate with organizations from across the country. Keeping your pets hydrated

e see many reminders for humans to keep well hydrated, especially in the warm summer months. Here is a reminder and tips to keep your pets well hydrated, too! Proper hydration is vital for the health of your dog, cat or any animal. Humans, as well as our pets, are made up of about 80 percent water! We often think of proper hydration as being necessary for keeping cool in warm weather. Indeed, it is! Our dogs panting is her way of keeping cool through evaporation. Water in our pets bodies is also necessary for every function, including digestion, circulation and waste removal. Veterinarians suggest chronic levels of dehydration may lead to health issues, including impaired kidney function. You may be thinking that your dog or cat seems to drink enough at the water bowl, but how can we be sure our pets are getting enough water? Consider the food you feed your dog or cat. A dog or cat hunting for its food would be eating prey that is about 80 percent moisture. Dry dog and cat food contains only 10 percent moisture. If you feed a dry food, your pets digestive system is immediately trying to use available moisture in the body to begin digesting the food. Adding at least 1/2 cup of water to each cup of food and allowing it time to absorb before feeding will ease the burden on the digestive system. You can also add extra water to canned, homemade and raw diets. Some pet owners have been concerned that adding water to food may cause loose stools. Fortunately, this is not the case.

Choosing natural personal care products

ow many different personal care products do you use in a day? Start in the shower: face wash, shampoo, conditioner, soap and maybe shaving cream. From there, your beauty regime could include hair creams, hairspray, face lotions, anti-aging serums, body creams, deodorant, lip balm, sunscreen and more. According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), the nations leading environmental health research and advocacy organization, you average nine different products every day, with 25 percent of women using as many as 15. Thats almost the same amount of food you ingest on a daily basis. But do you pay as much attention to those personal care products as you do the items on a restaurant menu or your grocery list? You should. Your skin is your largest organ, and its covered in pores. As a result, some portion of what you put on your body ends up in your body. So its important to educate yourself on personal care projects just as you would food. And the key in the hair care, skin care and nail care aisles is the same as it is in the snack aisle: Read the labels! The FDA doesnt require any premarket safety testing for chemicals commonly found in personal care products. According to the EWG, such consumer goods are manufactured with 10,500 unique chemical ingredients, some of which are known or suspected carcinogens, toxic to the reproductive system or known to disrupt the endocrine system. And you cant believe the word natural on the bottle, as theres no FDA standard for that term. Manufacturers can even get away with organic if its in the products name. To make your personal care routine as healthy as your diet, turn the bottle around and study the ingredients. You might not recognize every item, but its important to watch out for a few:

Parabens: Widely used as preservatives in many cosmetic

products, these compounds have been linked to breast cancer, and reproductive and developmental disorders. 1,4-dioxane: This known carcinogen exists in nearly half of all products containing ethoxylated surfactants. Canada and the European Union have already banned the chemical, yet its still allowed in the U.S. Sulfate surfactants: This foam producer can lead to eye damage, depression, labored breathing and severe skin irritation. It can even corrode hair follicles and cause permanent damage. Synthetic fragrance: Your product may smell great, but that fragrance also could indicate the presence of any of more than 5,000 chemicals, including some known toxins and carcinogens. Phthalates: Used to enhance fragrance, this chemical can irritate skin, be toxic to the kidneys and the immune system, and even cause male reproductive disorders. Glycols: This solvent can weaken the protein and cellular structure of your skin and is a known irritant. Gluten: This wheat byproduct is an allergen for many individuals. You can add to your gluten-free diet by also avoiding it in your personal care products. For a healthy life, its important to pay as much attention to what you put on your body as what you put in your body. By simply reading the label, you can have natural beauty inside and out.

Keep water bowls and pails clean and full. Bits of food can contaminate drinking water quickly in warm weather. Water dishes should be washed daily with a mild dish soap and rinsed thoroughly. Be sure to keep water in a place accessible to your pets at all times. Consider providing a steady stream of water. Cats and some dogs are more likely to drink an adequate amount of water if the water is running. Pet water fountains are available that provide a steady stream of water. Look for models that use a filter to keep the water fresh. Be prepared when traveling. Take water and an appropriate bowl or pail with you when you are traveling with your dog or cat. There are water bottles and portable bowls that make it easy to bring water along on car trips or dog park outings. Stick with the familiar. Some animals are less likely to eat or drink when they are away from home. Take water with you from your home tap if that is what your pet is used to drinking. Water quality and taste may vary in different locations and your pet may not like the difference in taste. There are also products available to add to your pets water that may encourage them to drink. Read labels carefully to ensure they have healthy ingredients.

the cavity-causing bacteria from the parent to baby, increasing the possibility of tooth decay as they grow. A childs teeth are susceptible to decay as soon as they begin to erupt, said Dr. Jonathan Shenkin, a pediatric dentist in Maine and a pediatric dental spokesperson for the ADA. Cavity-causing bacteria, especially Streptococcus mutans, can be transferred from adult saliva to children, increasing their risk of getting cavities. Dr. Shenkin points to other steps that parents can take to help children develop a healthy immune system. Breast milk is widely acknowledged as a good immunity-builder as well as the most complete form of nutrition for infants. This is something on which both the ADA and the AAP agree. The ADA recommends that parents protect the dental health of young children by promoting a healthy diet, monitoring their intake of food and drink, brushing their teeth or wiping gums after mealtimes and by having infants finish their bedtime or nap time bottle before going to bed. Children should receive their first dental visit within six months of eruption of the first tooth and no later than 12 months of age. Dry needling, often called trigger point needling or functional dry needling, is a single therapeutic procedure. Acupuncture is a collection of techniques creating a therapeutic experience. Dry needling is a Western medical term used to describe the insertion of a needle into a painful area of the body, typically a myofacial (muscular) trigger point. Acupuncture is a Traditional Chinese Medicine translation used to describe the insertion of a needle into a specific area of pain or Ashi point. Additional areas on the body are needled to support and sustain the effect of the needle used for your pain. Dry needling involves multiple advances of the needle. Acupuncture manipulates the needle without removing the needle from the skin at a specific depth, angle and rotational axis. Good sleep health is a big deal

t seems that you see a lot of articles about sleep these days, and you might be asking yourself, Whats the big deal about sleep? Well, a full, healthy night of sleep is normal and vital to your mental and physical well-being. Not getting a good nights sleep is not normal, is not healthy and may lead to a need to see a doctor. Whether you get a good nights sleep can impact everything from beauty and weight, to health and concentration it can even affect your sex life. Sleep experts warn that not getting your beauty sleep can make it difficult to lose weight and has a dramatic affect on the health and appearance of your skin and eyes. On a more serious side, a chronic lack of sleep can lead to depression, Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, stroke and even death. While there is no magic number for the amount of sleep you need, here are some guidelines from the National Sleep Foundation to help you determine what a normal amount of sleep is for you: Children 5-12 years 10-11 hours Teens 13-17 years 8.5-9.25 hours Adults 7-9 hours

Lead to depression, anxiety disorder and substance abuse. Increase risk of accidents due to slower reaction time. Decrease performance at work or school.

So if you think that a trip to the doctor is a good idea for you, here are a few things you can do to make your visit more productive: Keep a sleep log/diary: Include information like your sleep schedule, when it is difficult to sleep, how often you wake up at night, occurrences of tiredness during the day, etc. Make note of any symptoms you notice: Are you having trouble concentrating? Do you feel moody? Are you irritable? Bring a list of medications and supplements you are taking. Know your medical history, including dates and times of major procedures. Consider bringing your spouse if you think he or she can provide helpful information about your sleep problems, including issues like snoring, unusual turning and shifting, and such. With your doctors help, you may discover that you have insomnia that can be treated with behavioral therapy rather than medications, or you may receive an order for an overnight sleep study, which can diagnose sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a serious condition that can severely hinder your sleep and overall health, but it is treatable with CPAP and BiPAP therapy. It is recommended that you have your sleep study conducted in a well facility that specializes in sleep medicine. It is also advisable to shop around to make sure that your insurance is in-network and to find out what it will cost you if your insurance has a high deductible or copay before you schedule. Costs can vary greatly from facility to facility. Take control of your health and make sure that youre getting the much-needed sleep your body deserves. After all, lifes a big deal take care of yourself so you can make the most of it!

Poor sleep may stem from a myriad of things, including insomnia, medical conditions, reactions to medications and sleep apnea. Its important to pinpoint the cause of your sleeplessness in order to determine whether or not it is necessary to see your doctor. Some people experience a brief period of insomnia due to jet leg, shift work, the stress of an event (e.g., weddings, funerals, relocation, work deadline), a cold or flu type illness, or from side effects of pain medications prescribed for an injury or post-operation. But if you have experienced insomnia for more than a couple of weeks, you should consult your doctor to determine the cause of the problem and how you can get back to a healthy sleeping pattern. Left unchecked, a lack of sleep can: Increase the risk and severity of long-term illness (e.g., heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes). Lead to weight gain or obesity. Negatively affect the immune system.

Echinacea
(Echinacea purpurea) 

here are nine known species of echinacea, all of which are native to the United States and southern Canada. The most commonly used is Echinacea purpurea. Echinacea has traditionally been used for colds, flu and other infections, based on the idea that it might stimulate the immune system to more effectively fight infection. Less common folk or traditional uses of echinacea include for wounds and skin problems, such as acne or boils. The aboveground parts of the plant and roots of echinacea are used fresh or dried to make teas, squeezed (expressed) juice, extracts or preparations for external use. Study results are mixed on whether echinacea can prevent or effectively treat upper respiratory tract infections such as the common cold. For example, two NCCAM-funded studies did not find a benefit from echinacea, either as Echinacea purpurea fresh-pressed juice for treating colds in children, or as an unrefined mixture of Echinacea angustifolia root and Echinacea purpurea root and herb in adults. However, other studies have shown that echinacea may be beneficial in treating upper respiratory infections. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) is continuing to support the study of echinacea for the treatment of upper respiratory infections. NCCAM is also studying echinacea for its potential effects on the immune system.

Also, people with asthma or atopy (a genetic tendency toward allergic reactions) may be more likely to have an allergic reaction when taking echinacea. Whats functional medicine?

unctional medicine is simply how your body functions! Its what all medicine should be but has gradually strayed away from. We have become obsessed with the cure of diseases and all wrapped up in doing high-priced procedures because that is where the money is. The curiosity with cause and effect has become lost. Instead, we settle for national guidelines, established by large committees that often represent entrenched egos and established economic vested interests (read hospitals, pharmaceutical industry, insurance industry, tenured professors). No wonder it takes 17 years for innovation to get from the bench to the bedside. Ever wonder why the news you hear on your TV isnt consistent with what your doctor does? Thats the reason. Its not in the guidelines for another 17 years. So, dont hold your breath! But research and medical progress is racing along. There is lots of new stuff happening, much of it being discovered around the world in other cultures and societies. When we travel globally and look at other environments and societies, we find dramatic differences from what is considered dogma in America. Take for example broken hips. Did you know that American women break their hips at least 80 times as often as women in other cultures? Ever wonder why? A fall with a broken bone is a higher risk for premature death for women over age 65 than cancer or heart disease. We dread cancer and heart disease, but broken bones fall below the radar. The COMB study, released last fall from Canada, now gives us a clue as to why. Vitamin K2 was added to vitamin D, fish oil, strontium and magnesium to result in bone density increasing at twice the rate of any modern osteoporosis drug, all without side effects and at pennies of cost. Hmm. Have you heard about the COMB study? No! You see ad after ad on television for all the osteoporosis drugs that have terrible potential side effects. You see lots of actors with white upper lips advertising milk. Did you notice the COMB study didnt include calcium? Did you notice that it did include magnesium? These are all new ideas not included in the modern, standard teaching promulgated by out-of-date health care dogma. How did our bones go wrong in America? The picture is emerging. animals. American farms shifted cows off the pasture onto the feedlot about 70-100 years ago. The K2 in our food supply has subsequently plummeted. It takes decades for bones to become weak. In fact, your bone density as a teen predicts your bone density as an elder, so bone density is really a life-long quest. The good news: the end of osteoporosis may be at hand in the simple, gentle, life-long application of proper food, exercise and vitamin K2. And thats functional medicine in a nutshell. Our food is our strongest medicine. But there are other bodily systems that need balancing after becoming badly out of balance. Once human physiology is deeply understood, dramatic things can happen. Coronary artery disease can be reversed with food and proper hormones/supplements. Cancer can be tamed and turned into a chronic disease. Diabetes can be reversed. Alzheimers can be forestalled, delayed, softened. Functional medicine isnt alternative or some sort of weird medicine. Question: What are your thoughts on cheat meals, especially for those that are diligent with their daily eating? Answer: Its an interesting question, but the answer really depends on how you define diligent. For those that follow consistent patterns of clean eating meaning they follow a regimented diet of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and healthy fats I have no problem with a cheat meal here and there. Again, it just comes down to frequency. I happen to think that having a cheat meal or splurging a bit is just part of living a healthy and happy life. But you also have to realize that it doesnt take much to throw you off track if your focus is on attaining or maintaining a healthy weight. Therefore, it may be wise to increase your physical activity for a day or two before and after the meal. This will help to compensate for the calorie load and may make you more at ease with your decision. And be mindful of your other meals as well, so that your one cheat meal doesnt turn into two or three. Enjoy! Question: I see a bunch of guys wearing weight belts in the gym. Should I be wearing one too? Answer: Generally speaking, theres no need to wear a weight belt when strength training. This practice became quite popular in the 80s and 90s, and now you can find plenty of people that simply wont lift without them. Dont be one of them! In actuality, lifting consistently with a weight belt can weaken your lower back and abdominal muscles over time, so most of us should be leaving it at home. There are certain instances when a weight belt may be useful however, including maximal lifts for things like squats, dead lifts and overhead presses. But when you move on to exercises like rowing, bench presses and other more standard lifts, take it off and toss it aside! Question: What should I eat or drink if I only have an hour before I work out? Answer: What you eat before a practice or game should be largely determined by timing and personal preference. Generally speaking, a large meal takes 4-5 hours to digest, a smaller meal takes 2-3 hours and a large snack takes 1-2 hours. If you dont digest food well enough prior to an activity, you can end up with a stomachache and cramping. This often occurs because blood (which plays a key role in digestion) is shunted to your arms and legs during activity, thereby slowing down the digestive process. Therefore, if you only have an hour to fuel yourself, it would probably be best to stick with a liquid carbohydrate/protein shake. Liquids are processed faster than solid foods and will provide the energy you need in a shorter time frame. Keep in mind, were not talking about those ice cream-based shakes from fast food restaurants. Were talking about a sports nutrition shake that is designed for active individuals and athletes. If you want something lighter, a traditional sports drink would be a viable option as well. There are a number of products on the market in each category, so do some taste-testing to see which ones work best for you.

They are like extra pounds of fat that we are carrying around which can be taxing on us both physically and mentally. Energy follows thought. Every achievement you experience began as a single thought consisting of a few micro milliwatts of energy flowing through your brain. That thought was followed by millions more. Clocked at 1,200 words per minute, thoughts have a tremendous impact on the mind, emotions and body. When negative thoughts arise (which the body perceives as a threat), an automatic physiological response is triggered called the fight or flight mechanism. The body reacts as if there is a danger or a threat and prepares to either take action toward the threat (fight) or flee for its life (flight). This was a valuable human response if you were in real serious danger, but it is counterproductive in our daily activities. The repeated and unnecessary triggering of this response causes the body to produce emergency chemicals (which includes the flow of adrenaline), and if unused, these chemicals eventually begin breaking down into other more toxic substances. The body must then mobilize yet again to get rid of the poisons, which creates enormous

physiological stress. As you can see, this downward mind/body spiral can continue almost indefinitely. When it has gone on for a while, we call it depression. Life is stressful enough, so who needs the extra weight of a negative thought? It is seeing something the way it is. Everything necessary to achieve positive thoughts is within us. Negative thinking is the only thing that can obstruct your goals. Your thoughts create your reality. Motivation, drive and powerful positive thoughts will transform your life from mediocrity to excellence.

why I was so exhausted. We discussed many issues. He asked me if I was anxious or depressed. I didnt feel anxious and I wasnt depressed. I was also told that it could be hormonal (which everything at my age seems to be related to). After my appointment, I met my friend who works for an ear, nose and throat (ENT) physician for lunch. I explained to her how I was feeling, how I used to love to sleep but could no longer stay asleep, and how tired and irritable I had become. My friend began to suspect that I had obstructive sleep apnea. She explained that my physician probably did not think that I would have something like this because I am a fit-looking, 51-year-old, in-shape woman; thus, I did not fit the stereotypical obstructive sleep apnea patient. Generally, overweight men and women over the age of 50 with my symptoms are normally sent for a sleep study because they are more obvious candidates. She told me that a lot of people who have apnea dont fit the stereotype. And, unfortunately, doctors tend not to think about obstructive sleep apnea in someone who does not fit that stereotype. In fact, thin people can get apnea, as well as children. She added that although loud snoring is a very common symptom, non-snorers can have the condition as well. Obstructive sleep apnea is a common disorder in which you stop breathing or take very short breaths for short periods of time while you are sleeping. The number of times your breathing is interrupted per hour determines how severe your apnea is. These interruptions in your breathing will disrupt your sleep pattern, which makes it hard for your body to refresh and refuel itself. These interruptions also make it hard on your brain and your heart because they are not getting the oxygen needed to function well, which could cause high blood pressure, stroke and cardiac arrest. My friend suggested that I call Endeavor Therapy and Sleep Center for a free home sleep screening. She told me that her physicians office referred patients with my symptoms to Endeavor to help rule in or rule out possible obstructive sleep apnea. Me, creative? questions Joan, the woman I persuaded to join my creativity group. I dont believe I have a creative bone in my body, she adds. And yet, as a hand analyst, I point out she not only has a gift marking for creativity, but also she has creativity as part of her life purpose. If she doesnt use it, she will experience the penalties of it. Thats the power of having an analysis: you are shown exactly what gifts you have, what purpose you came forth to live and what lesson(s) is getting in your way of manifesting all you came to be. Sarah brought her skeptical boyfriend, Joe, to see me for an analysis. He was thinking about switching his college major to something more traditional, reliable and secure during this time of job scarcity and financial distress. After our analysis, he felt energized and confident in his need to continue pursuing his creative musicianship. Thwarting his creative passion could likely lead him down a road of complacency, or worse, one of alcoholism, depression or other likely illness. And then there is Marjorie, older and suffering with arthritis, bent fingers and memory failure, with a host of medications at her side throughout her day. She dreamed of being a ballet dancer, a writer or a painter, but instead she chose accounting. She was quite good at it, and it served her well for the family she raised. But now she felt empty and unfulfilled, believing she was too old to rekindle that spark of joy that her creative focus might ignite. What Joan, Joe and Marjorie all had in common was a need for creativity in their lives; it was part of their spiritual blueprint, and they finally believed it when I showed them the markings in their hands. Marjorie in particular had lived long enough to show that her body was a mirror for how she had lived her life. We see it first in the hands, because every line, every shape, every twist is a result of our thinking. What shows up on all hands are the neurological markings of our brain patterns. We can see various clues like: when we are stuck in stubborn thinking; when we need to clear sadness; when we put our desires on hold; and when we are not nurturing our own health. Our body speaks to us in whispers, and the first of it shows up in our hands. If we ignore the whispers, then the body cries out with symptoms and pain. Dr. Lissa Rankin, in her book, Mind over Medicine: scientific proof that you can heal yourself, agrees that we must treat the root cause of why we are suffering. Western medicines band-aiding is not the answer. Within her list of nine major areas that really make us healthy or sick, creative expression is one.

to be instructed on how to use the device because I had a lot of questions. I took the free screening unit home for the night (this was a Monday night) and brought it back the next day (Tuesday). Within 24 hours I had my results. I had stopped breathing numerous times per hour and was suspected as having obstructive sleep apnea. Endeavor gave me a copy of my report to give to my physician. My physician then wrote an order for an overnight sleep study in the sleep laboratory at Endeavor. The staff checked my insurance and told me what my insurance would cover and what my portion would be (this was on a Wednesday). I was able to get in to the sleep laboratory on the following Tuesday night. I was happy to get in so quickly since I had been dealing with this issue for over a year. I arrived for my sleep study on Tuesday night at 8:00 p.m. and a registered sleep technician wired me up to electrodes to monitor brain waves, eye movements, heart rate, respiratory effort, limb movements and oxygenation while I slept. She explained everything that she was doing and the reason why, and had me watch a DVD about what I was going through. She also fitted me for a mask through which she had me attached to a machine to push air into my airway called a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine. If the first part of my sleep study showed I had sleep apnea, she would then come in for the second part of the study to put the mask with the CPAP on to treat me. Amazingly, I fell asleep and around 1:30 a.m., I was awakened. The sleep tech came into my room to put the CPAP mask on my face for the treatment part of my study. I slept like a baby for the rest of the night. I actually woke up feeling refreshed and ready to go. I left the sleep laboratory at 6:30 a.m. the next morning. I followed up with my physician and was told that I had stopped breathing 28 times an hour. The physician told me that per the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) guidelines I was considered to have moderate obstructive sleep apnea. (A mild case is determined by 5 to 15 episodes per hour; moderate is 15 to 30 episodes per hour; and severe is 30+ episodes per hour). I was back at Endeavor for a CPAP machine by the following Tuesday. And, I have to tell you, I feel like a new person. I now sleep through the night, wake up feeling refreshed and am energized to start the day. My memory is clear and intact. My husband likes sleeping next to me again, since I am so quiet. Life is good! Since my experience, I ask my friends and family about their sleep to see if they have symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea and urge them to utilize the free home screening at Endeavor. So far, two of my friends were found to have obstructive sleep apnea. One stops breathing 22 times per hour and the other 65 times per hour. They are now both on CPAP machines at home and thankful for my nudge to do something. I greatly encourage anyone that may have these symptoms to find out if you have sleep apnea by calling Endeavor for a free home screening. That way, you can help your physician figure out your unexplained fatigue. As you can see from my experience, it is a fast, easy and life-changing process!
