Hal Moore
A Soldier Onceand Always
Mike Guardia Hal Moore, one of the most admired American combat leaders of the last 50 years, has until now been best known to the public for being portrayed by Mel Gibson in the movie We Were Soldiers. In this first-ever, fully illustrated biography, we finally learn the full story of one of Americas true military heroes. A 1945 graduate of West Point, Moores first combats occurred during the Korean War, where he fought in the battles of Old Baldy, T-Bone, and Pork Chop Hill. At the beginning of the Vietnam War, Moore commanded the 1st Battalion of the 7th Cavalry in the first full-fledged battle between U.S. and North Vietnamese regulars. Drastically outnumbered and nearly overrun, Moore led from the front, and though losing 79 soldiers, accounted for 1,200 of the enemy before the Communists withdrew. This Battle of Ia Drang pioneered the use of air mobile infantry delivering troops into battle via helicopterwhich became the staple of U.S. operations for the remainder of the war. He later wrote of his experiences in the best-selling book, We Were Soldiers Onceand Young. Following his tour in Vietnam, he assumed command of the 7th Infantry Division, forwardstationed in South Korea, and in 1971, he took command of the Army Training Center at Fort Ord, California. In this capacity, he oversaw the US Armys transition from a conscript-based to an allvolunteer force. He retired as a Lieutenant General in 1977. $32.95 288 pages 6 x 9 Illustrated throughout September 2013 hardback 9781612002071 eISBN: 9781612002088

The Devils General
The Life of Hyazinth Graf Strachwitz - the Panzer Graf
Raymond Bagdonas This is the story of the highly decorated German regimental commander of World War II, known as the Panzer Graf. An aristocratic Silesian, Strachwitz first won the Iron Cross in the Great War. After fighting with the Freikorps, he was serving with the 1st Panzer Division when the Polish campaign inaugurated World War II. Leading from the front, his exploits as commander of a panzer battalion earned him further decorations during the French campaign. Transferred to the newly formed 16th Panzer Division, he participated in the invasion of Yugoslavia and then Operation Barbarossa where he earned the Knights Cross. The following year, he won the Oak Leaves for destroying 270 Soviet tanks at Kalach. Now commander of a regiment, he reached the Volga and fought on the northern rim of Sixth Armys perimeter. Wounded during the battles, he was flown out of the Stalingrad pocket and was spared the fate of the rest of Sixth Army. Upon recuperation, he was named commander of the Grossdeutschland Divisions panzer regiment, and won the Swords to the Knights Cross during Mansteins counteroffensive at Kharkov. After fighting through Kursk and the ensuing defensive battles, he was transferred the next year to Army Group North where he won the Diamonds to the Knights Cross at Narva. For the rest of the war, he commanded ad hoc battlegroups, and pioneered the formation of tank hunter brigades, consisting of deep-penetration infantry armed with panzerfausts and other demolitions who would ambush Soviet tanks. Wounded 12 times during the war, he was finally able to surrender to the Americans in May 1945.

7 Leadership Lessons
Leadership, Liberty, and the American Revolution
John Antal This book is about seven defining leadership moments from the American Revolution. 7 Leadership Lessons is not a complete study of the American Revolution; readers will have to go elsewhere for such a chronicle. Rather it is the story of seven leadership moments that helped to win liberty during the struggle for Independence. On these pages you learn about real people facing real challenges and overcoming what reasonable observers believed were insurmountable odds. These leaders, thankfully, were unreasonable for the cause of liberty. This work is a guide to learning about the leadership that created a revolution, opposed Great Britain, the greatest power of its age, and created the freest society on earth. In these pages you are able to study the leadership of a select few who changed the course of human events and helped bring about the birth of an exceptional nation. This is a compact collection of stories that retell some of the most dramatic events in the founding of the United States. These storiesfor leadership is best learned by storytelling, rather than through lectures on process, style, or techniqueoffer you insights into the meaning of leadership and liberty that can change your life. $29.95 288 pages 6 x 9 8pp illustrations August 2013 hardback 9781612002026 eISBN: 9781612002033 These seven leadership lessons are as relevant today as they were essential to the birth of the United States. The stories are about the leadership that forged colonial British subjects into a nation of Americans. They define the leadership that hammered out the standard for how Americans are expected to lead. In 1775, this leadership created the flame of liberty that lit the world, and offered a beacon of freedom and human progress to all men.

The Fights on the Little Horn
50 Years of Research into Custers Last Stand
Gordon Harper This remarkable book synthesizes a lifetime of research into one of Americas most storied disasters, the defeat of Custers 7th Cavalry. The author spent countless hours on the battlefield itself and researched every iota of evidence of the fight from both sides. He was thus able to recreate every step of the battle, dispelling myths and falsehoods along the way. Harper passed away in 2006, leaving behind nearly two million words of research and writing. In this book, his work has been condensed for the general public to observe his key findings and the crux of his narrative on the course of the battle. One of his first observations is that the fight took place along the Little Horn Riverits junction with the Big Horn was miles away so that the term for the battle, Little Big Horn has always been a misnomer. He traces the activities of Benteens battalion on that day, and why it could never come to Custers reinforcement. He describes Renos desperate fight, as well as how that unnerved officer benefited from the unexpected heroism of his men. Indian accounts come to the fore especially during Custers part of the fight, because no white soldier survived it. However, analysis of the forensic evidence plus the locations of bodies assist in drawing an accurate scenario of how the final scene unfolded. It may indeed be clearer now than it was to the doomed 7th Cavalrymen at the time, who through the dust and smoke and Indians seeming to rise by hundreds from the ground, only gradually realized the extent of the disaster.

Unsung Eagles
True Stories of Americas Citizen Airmen in the Skies of World War II
Jay Stout The nearly half-million American aircrewmen who served during World War II have almost disappeared. And so have their stories. Award-winning writer and former fighter pilot Jay A. Stout uses Unsung Eagles to save an exciting collection of those accounts from oblivion. These are not rehashed tales from the hoary icons of the war. Rather, they are stories from the masses of largely unrecognized men whoin the aggregateactually won it. They are the recollections of your Uncle Frank who shared them only after having enjoyed a beer or nine, and of your old girlfriends grandfather who passed away about the same time she dumped you. And of the craggy guy who ran the towns salvage yard; a dusty, fly-specked B-24 model hung over the counter. These are everyman accounts that are important but fast disappearing. Ray Crandall describes how he was nearly knocked into the Pacific by a heavy cruisers main battery during the Second Battle of the Philippine Sea. Jesse Barker tells of dodging naval bombardments in the stinking mud of Guadalcanal. Bob Popeney relates how his friend and fellow A-20 pilot was blown out of formation by German antiaircraft fire: I could see the inside of the airplaneand I could see Nordstroms eyes. He looked confusedand then immediately he flipped up and went tumbling down. The combat careers of 22 different pilots from all the services are captured in this crisply written book which captivates the reader not only as an engaging oral history, but also puts personal context into the air battles of World War II.

Second Front
The Allied Invasion of France, 1942-43 (An Alternative History)
Alexander M. Grace One of the great arguments of World War II took place among Allied military leaders over when and where to launch a second front against Germany in Europe. Stalin, holding on by his teeth in Russia, urged a major invasion from the west. The Americans, led by Marshall and Wedemeyer, argued likewise. It was Churchill who got his way, however, with his Mediterranean strategy, including a campaign on the Italian peninsula, which he mistakenly called the soft underbelly of Europe. This realistic, fact-based work posits what would have happened had Churchill been overruled, and that rather than invading North Africa in the fall of 1942, thence Sicily and Italy, the Allies had hit the coast of southern France instead. The key element that enables the alternative scenario is the cooperation of Vichy, which was negotiated at the time but refused. If the Allies had promised sufficient force to support the French, however, the entire southern coastline of France would have been undefended against a surprise invasion. In this book, once the Allied armies are ashore, Germans stream toward the front, albeit through a gauntlet of Maquis, Allied paratroopers and airpower. Meantime the Allied forces push up the Rhne Valley and titanic armored clashes take place near Lyons. Already in desperate straits at Stalingrad, where they had committed their air and armored reserves, the Germans had also yet to switch to a full total-war economy, with tanks like the Panther and Tiger not yet deployed. This fascinating alternative history comes close to informing us exactly what might have happened had D-Day in Europe come as early as some had wished.

Da Nang Diary
A Forward Air Controllers Gunsight View of Combat in Vietnam
Tom Yarborough Originally published in 1991, this classic work has now been revised and updated with additional photos, many of them in color. It is the story of how, in Vietnam, an elite group of Air Force pilots fought a secret air war in Cessna 0-2 and OV-10 Bronco prop planesflying as low as they could get. The eyes and ears of the fast-moving jets who rained death and destruction down on enemy positions, the Forward Air Controller made an art form out of an air strikeknowing the targets, knowing where friendly troops were, and reacting with split-second, life and death decisions as a battle unfolded. The expertise of the low, slow FACs, as well as the hazard attendant to their role, made for a unique birds-eye perspective on how the entire war in Vietnam unfolded. For Tom Yarborough, who logged 1,500 hours of combat flying time, the risk was constant, intense and electrifying. A member of the super-secret Prairie Fire unit, Yarborough became one of the most frequently shot-up pilots flying out of Da Nangengaging in a series of dangerous secret missions in Laos. In this work, the reader flies in the cockpit alongside Yarborough in his adrenaline-pumping chronicle of heroism, danger and wartime brotherhood. From the rescuing of downed pilots to taking out enemy positions, to the most harrowing extended missions directly overhead of the NVA, here is the dedication, courage and skill of the fliers who took the war into the enemys backyard.

The Dam Busters In the Words of the Bomber Crews
W.B. Bartlett $19.95 336 pages 4.65 x 7.75 66 illustrations (32 in color) June 2013 paperback 9781445611938 It was not long before midnight on 17 May 1943 when the inhabitants of Gnne, the German village close to the Mhne Dam, heard the air raid warnings. It was widely regarded as a precautionary measure, but ninety minutes later, an immense tidal wave was roaring down the valley towards them. Guy Gibson, who led X Squadron of 19 specially adapted Lancasters equipped with Barnes Walliss bouncing bomb, knew that the odds were stacked against him and his men. Some, like Squadron Leader Young, would return home as heroes. Others, like Pilot Officer Byers and his crew, would not. A small number of those involved would survive crashed aircraft and live out the war in POW camps. The Dam Busters raids have gone down as the most famous air strikes in history. Yet behind the story of courage and determination there lies another, darker side, both for the aircrews and for those who lived below the dams in the path of the flood.

Douglas Bader
A Fighter Aces Life
Dilip Sarkar $40.00 352 pages 6 x 9.25 90 illustrations June 2013 hardback 9781445612768 The story of Douglas Bader, the RAF fighter pilot who shot down twenty enemy fighters during the Second World War despite having lost both his legs, defies fiction. A fighter ace and highly decorated war hero, his name remains the one the public associate most with the Battle of Britain. That he overcame his disability and flew into battle is truly remarkable. Baders first aerial victory a Messerschmitt 109 was recorded over Dunkirk on 1 June 1940. During the subsequent Battle of Britain, Bader claimed the destruction of seven more enemy aircraft. The legless airman was rich material for the propagandists, who lost no time in manipulating his exploits to increase Britains morale.
Martello Towers
Michael Foley $24.95 128 pages 6.5 x 9.25 88 illustrations june 2013 paperback 9781445615226 There are a number of strange buildings that stand on the south and east coasts of England, often thought to be water towers or ventilation shafts. They are, in fact, important historical defenses, built to stop Napoleons army invading our shores during the wars of the early nineteenth century. Any ship approaching the coast could come under fire from at least four of the buildings at once. They are the Martello towers. More than a hundred were built along the coasts of Kent, Sussex, Essex and Suffolk. Others were built in Ireland and other parts of the empire. Their creation caused severe differences of opinion between some of the best-known men of the period. Names such as Nelson, Wellington, Pitt and Cobbett all had something to say about them.

Like a pack of wolves into a flock of sheep, the German boats scattered the convoy and mayhem ensued until the E-Boats called off the attack in the gathering light. What followed was recorded in history as the first day of the Battle of Britain. Andy Saunders delivers a blow-by-blow account from the perspective of the RAF, Luftwaffe, Merchant Navy, Royal Navy and Kriegsmarine on this milestone day. Using personal accounts of the action and a host of new photographic material, Convoy Peewit gives a breakdown of events on land, sea and air, setting them into context against the wider picture that was the Battle of Britain.
Coastal Dawn
Blenheims in Action from the Phoney War through the Battle of Britain
Andrew Bird $39.95 224 pages 8.25 x 5.75 70 b/w photos July 2013 hardback 9781906502690 In 1940, the defense of Great Britain rested with a handful of volunteer aircrew, Churchills few. Overshadowed in later folklore by the more famous Spitfire and Hurricane pilots, there were other pilots, observers and air gunners flying the Bristol Blenheim MKIV-F. The future of the country and arguably that of the free world depended also on their skill, morale and sacrifice. Remarkably little has been chronicled of these men and their aircraft the Trade Protection squadrons formed by Hugh Dowding allotted to 11 Group in October 1939. Drawing on contemporary diaries, periodicals, letters, logbooks, memoirs and interviews with survivors, lauded historian Andy Bird reassesses the vital role they played and repositions it in history. In doing so, he justifiably embraces the heroes we have left behind.

Rise and Fall
Tony Blackman $24.95 224 pages 6.75 x 9.5 4 color throughout July 2013 paperback 9781909166028 The scrapping of the Nimrod program has been one of the most controversial events in the military aviation world for many a year. For most of its operational life, from 1969 to date, its contribution to the defense of the realm and its role in offensive duties was often shrouded in secrecy. It was the eye in the sky which was absolutely vital to a host of activities from anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare, to support of land battles throughout the world, to the Falklands campaign, the Nimrods unsung role was paramount. The full story of the Nimrod, and its significance, has now been told. Tony Blackman, who was there at the beginning, test-flew nearly every aircraft and was at Kinloss on the very day the project was canceled, has written this timely book, covering every facet of its history, its weapons system developments and its tragic accidents.
No Parachute
A Classic Account of War in the Air in WWI
Arthur Gould Lee $26.95 photos included August 2013 hardback 9781909166042 From the young airmen who took their frail machines high above the trenches of World War I and fought their foes in single combat there emerged a renowned company of brilliant aces whose legendary feats have echoed down half a century. But behind the elite there hundreds of other airmen who flew their hazardous daily sorties in outdated planes without ever achieving fame. Here is the story of one of these unknown flyers a story based on letters written on the day, hot on the event, which tells of a young pilots progress from fledgling to seasoned fighter. His descriptions of air fighting, sometimes against the Richtofen Circus, of breathless dogfights between Sopwith Pup and Albatros, are among the most vivid and immediate to come out of World War I. Gould Lee brilliantly conveys the immediacy of air war, the thrills and the terror, in this honest and timeless account.

Tangmere
Famous Royal Air Force Fighter Station An Authorised History
Reginald Byron David Coxon $49.95 352 pages 6.75 x 9.5 8pp photo sections November 2013 hardback 9781909166196 This is the history of the RAF fighter station at Tangmere, from its beginnings in the First World War until its closure in 1970. It was one of the best-known and important fighter stations in the British Isles. On the outbreak of the Second World War, 1 Squadron was the first RAF squadron to be sent to France. Tangmeres Hurricane and Spitfire pilots continued to defend southern England for the next three years and turned to an offensive role. Squadrons at Tangmere were involved in Operation Jubilee and continued to harass the enemy across the Channel with increasing accuracy, culminating in a pivotal role in the D-Day landings. As the cold war set in Tangmere was no longer well positioned as an interceptor station and by the end of 1958 Fighter Command had withdrawn its last squadron. The airdrome was used by Signals Command for six years then served as a home to non-flying units until its decommissioning in 1970. It is now a museum with many valuable artifacts and aircraft.

Arab MiGs Volume 4
Transition and War of Attrition, 19671973
Tom Cooper David Nicolle Volume 4 in Harpia Publishings highly successful Arab MiGs series expands the history of the major Arab air forces that became involved in the wars with Israel during the period 1967 to 1973. It solves the intractable complexity of this violent period by dispassionately outlining the sequence of political and military events in chronological and geographic order. The reader is systematically taken through Egyptian attempts to reconstruct its battered air force and expand its air defense capabilities, and then reestablish control of its airspace in spite of increasing and ever more aggressive Israeli attacks. The military support Israel received from the United States not only resulted in both sides developing, testing and employing ever more advanced methods of air warfare, but eventually provoked a Soviet military intervention, which marked the culmination of the period better known as the War of Attrition. The narrative continues with dramatic descriptions of the developments in Jordan, which culminated in a civil war in 1970, and with an exclusive insight into the previously unknown expansion of the Syrian air arm with extensive support from Czechoslovakia, in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The content is concluded with lesser known military events in Algeria, Morocco, Iraq and Libya, where a series of military coups resulted in developments that were to become critical not only for the future of the local air forces, but also well beyond the borders of those countries.

Wiking (vol. 1)
Dcembre 1940 - Avril 1942
Charles Trang $73.00 420 pages 9.25 x 12 1000 photos December 2013 French Text hardback 9782840483465 The Wiking division was the only armored SS division to fight exclusively on the Eastern Front. It is true that it was partly composed of Flemish, Dutch and Scandinavian volunteers whose primary motivationfor most of them, was to fight against Bolshevism. It would have been a political mistake to go up against the Western Allies. The division fought with an unrelenting energy despite the fact that victory was not always equal to its efforts and sacrifices, as in Cherkasy or Hungary. Among the ranks of its officers were included high calipered men such as Felix Steiner, Herbert Otto Gille, August Dieckmann, Hans Dorr and Walter Schmidt to name a few. The history of this division, extremely detailed and illustrated by more than 2,500 exceptional photos largely from personal collections is here traced through a series of three volumes. The first covers the period from December 1940 to April 1942, the second from May 1942 until April 1943 and the third, recounts the last two years of war.

His goal was to achieve a complete society. In addition to the general organization, and quartered in units, this book presents the proposed new religion of Himmler, the organization of the SS marriage, the Ahnenerbe, the furniture piece designed for the corner of the family household, and the even porcelain figure Allach. This study is a veritable encyclopedia richly illustrated with a wealth of information and documents yet unpublished. Uniforms to honor weapons, furniture and porcelain, a work that will quickly become a reference for not only hobbyists and researchers but as well for historians.

Charles Trang $36.00 160 pages 9.25 x 12 photos and color profiles September 2013 French Text hardback 9782840483632 On June 22, 1941, the Axis forces invaded the Soviet Union. The biggest offensive of all time had just been launched. Among the 3.5 million men lined up by the Wehrmacht for Operation Barbarossa, approximately one hundred thousand belonged to the Waffen-SS. While they represented a small percentage of troops, their role was proportionally greater than their numbers foreshadowed. Indeed, because of their power, the Leibstandarte, Reich, Totenkopf and Wiking divisions were employed within Panzergruppen, spearheads of the German offensive. The Polizei-Division, although non-motorized, distinguished themselves by blowing up the Soviet lock on Louga.

Bushmen Warriors
The History of 31 and 201 Battalions in the Angolan War 1974-90
Ian Uys $59.95 320 pages 6 x 9 240 b/w photos, 4 maps December 2013 paperback 9781909384583 The Bushman soldiers were the most outstanding fighters of the Border War. As the first of the indigenous population to take up arms on South Africas behalf, they were the last to lay them down. Coming from a primitive hunter/gatherer culture, they responded well to a crash course in modern warfare. During Operation Savannah they were deployed as Battle-Group Alpha and advanced approximately 2,000 kilometers in a month. Afterwards, some of the Bushmen were trained as parachutists and served as Recces behind enemy lines. Their bravery was recognized in the award of Honoris Crux decorations to members and former members of this elite corps. Persecuted for centuries, the Bushmen have displayed the ability to survive and have adapted remarkably well to the modern world.

John Lovett $59.95 224 pages 8.5 x 11.5 c 220 b/w photos, 8pp color photos, 1 map October 2013 hardback 9781909384590 Contact 1 covers the war from its beginnings when the Unilateral Declaration of Independence was announced on 11 November 1965. But no government ever recognized Rhodesia, then under apartheid rule. Initially, the war consisted of minor skirmishes. From 1972 to 1976, the war was largely a stalemate. After 1976, the conflict became much more widespread and intense, until by the end of 1979 the whole country was engulfed in fighting. This is a passionate study of a lost war, and yet to many Rhodesians it was the time of their lives, despite the tragedies. It was a time of madness but almost all fought for what they believed was right - to defend their families, their culture, their muscular Christianity and their country.

During the Angolan civil war, Hooper was one of only two journalists allowed access to Jonas Savimbis Unita movement. Sudan suffered the continents longestrunning and least-reported civil war. Michael Embree $49.95 480 pages 6 x 9 60 b/w illustations, 28 b/w maps July 2013 paperback 9781909384392 In the spring of 1848, revolution threatened to sweep away the old order throughout Europe. Seemingly under attack from all sides, the Austrian Army was forced to concentrate in the famous Quadrilateral, formed by the fortress cities of Peschiera, Mantua, Legnago, and Verona. This volume narrates the tale of how one general saved an empire. With iron will ad the great personal affection of his men Radetzky maintained his army, and finally defeated his opponents. As his army career approached its close, he stood unsuccessfully for Birmingham as a Conservative. In 1884, he traveled to Egypt and participated in both battles of El Teb. Returning to England, his popularity with the public became greater than ever. On the Gordon Relief Expedition of 1884, he was denied attachment to the staff of his hero, General Wolseley, but traveled to Egypt anyway and became second in command on the desert march to Metemmeh. He never arrived, killed by a spear through the throat at the battle of Abu Klea.

A Military Transformed?
Adaption and Innovation in the British Military, 1792-1945
Michael LoCicero (Ed) Ross Mahoney (Ed) $59.95 256 pages 6 x 9 10 tables December 2013 hardback 9781909384460 Between 1792 and 1945, the character of warfare changed. Battalions standing shoulder to shoulder during the Napoleonic era gave way to the industrialized, modern armies of the First and Second World Wars. The organization and operational methods of the major military powers dramatically altered during this period and the British forces were no different. From the transition of the Royal Navys ships to oil from coal to the creation of an independent air force in 1918, the British military pioneered key innovations that affected the character of war on land, sea and air. To date, many commentators and historians have focused on contemporary debates or specific historical examples. A Military Transformed? brings many of these debates together and forms a broader picture. The complexity of change in the British Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force is explored in chapters drawing on new and original research. Examples covered include the British military performance in the Napoleonic Wars, the developments of the Army medical services in the late-nineteenth century, the Royal Navys introduction of the Whitehead torpedo in the 1870s, air power doctrine on the eve of the First World War, British Army reorganization in 1918 and amphibious operations in the Second World War.

During the First Restoration, 15 regiments were formed from the debris of the battles in Prussia and in France, fifteen regiments which then took part in the Belgian Campaign and its epilogue at Waterloo. King Louis VXIII dismissed these fifteen regiments on 16 July 1815, but it wasnt until the 18th that the Chasseurs a Cheval reappeared in the Royal Army!

Olivier Lapray $49.95 144 pages 9 x 12.5 November 2013 hardback 9782352503262 On 14 June 1800, Napoleon narrowly won the battle of Marengo. This famous battle opposed 28,000 French soldiers against 31,000 Austrian soldiers under the command of General Mlas. At first dominated, the French had to retreat nearly seven miles back. Juan Carlos Camignani Giles Boue $70.00 192 pages 9 x 12.5 300 photos November 2013 hardback 9782352503231 The links between Napoleon and Italy are too often reduced to its dazzling campaigns of 1796 and 1800. This love story continued well beyond Marengo. The story of Napoleon and Italy from 1805 to 1815 is primarily that of a relentless thought; there was not a single day without letters by mail or telegraph, to Milan, Rome and Naples. This permanence in imperial thought, illustrated the desire to make Italy a model French state.
Rocroi 1643
Stephane Thion $22.95 48 pages 8 x 9.5 June 2013 paperback 9782352502555 Fought on 19 May 1963 between the French army and the Spanish army, Rocroi is one of the most controversial battles in the long conflict between the kingdoms of France and Spain. The controversy of this battle concerns the French right flank, under the command of Louis II de Bourbon. The version accepted by historians of French sources affirms that the cavalry of Gassion overthrew the Spanish companies, defeating them. However, Spanish sources contend that the cavalry of Bourbon broke through the squadrons and two infantry regiments of the French guard on two occasions.

The Last Days of Stonewall Jackson
The Mortal Wounding of the Confederacys Greatest Icon
Chris Mackowski Kristopher D. White $12.95 168 pages 6 x 9 180 images and 2 maps Now Available paperback 9781611211504 eISBN- 9781611211511 May 1863. The Civil War was in its third spring, and Confederate Lt. Gen. Thomas Jonathan Jackson stood at the peak of his fame. He had arisen from obscurity to become Old Stonewall, adored across the South and feared and respected throughout the North. On the night of May 2, however, just hours after Jackson executed the most audacious maneuver of his career and delivered a crushing blow against an unsuspecting Union army at Chancellorsville, disaster struck. The Last Days of Stonewall Jackson recounts the events of that fateful night and the tense vigil that ensued as Jackson struggled with a foe even he could not defeat. From Guinea Station, where Jackson crosses the river to rest under the shade of the trees, the story follows Jacksons funeral and burial, the strange story of his amputated arm, and the creation and restoration of the building where he died.
Bloody Autumn
The Shenandoah Valley Campaign of 1864
Daniel T. Davis Phillip S. Greenwalt $12.95 168 pages 6 x 9 17 illustrations, 6 maps October 2013 Paperback 9781611211658 In the spring of 1862, a string of Confederate victories in the Valley foiled Union plans in the state and kept Confederate armies fed and supplied. In 1863, the Army of Northern Virginia used the Valley as its avenue of invasion, culminating in the battle of Gettysburg. The Valley continued to offer Confederates an alluring backdoor to Washington D.C. When Sheridan returned to the Valley in 1864, the stakes jumped dramatically. To lose the Valley would mean to lose the state, Stonewall Jackson had once saidand now that prediction would be put to the test as Sheridan fought with Confederate Lieutenant General Jubal Early for possession. For the North, the momentum its war effort had gained by capturing Atlanta would quickly evaporate; for Abraham Lincoln, defeat in the Valley could mean defeat in the upcoming election. For the South, more than its breadbasket was at stakeits nascent nationhood lay on the line.

Just as the nation was torn asunder, so too was the Bluegrass State. Tumultuous politics gave way to the boots of marching armies that turned some of the most beautiful landscape in the country into bloody battlefields. Don W. Rightmyers fresh narrative history is the first comprehensive account of politics and war in the Bluegrass State. After describing the states situation as a critical border state when the war broke out, Rightmyer delves into the tumultuous events that followed, including the violation of the states neutrality by Confederate troops, Union occupation, and the critical 1862 Confederate invasion that culminated in the battle of Perryville.

Seaforth Publishing
British Naval Swords and Swordsmanship
John McGrath Mark Barton This new publication is intended to bring together a mass of research dealing with all aspects of British naval swords. Unlike the much sought after Swords and Sea Service by May and Annis, this work offers a far broader coverage and, for the first time, the complete story of swords and swordsmanship is presented in one concise volume. While the swords themselves are described, the authors also tell the story of naval swordsmanship. For example, subjects such as how swords and cutlasses were used in action and how training was conducted are covered. The authors also address how the use of swords developed into a sport in the Navy, and how swords and swordsmanship entered naval symbology in such areas as ships names. Many current myths are addressed and corrected, and the story is brought right up to date with information on the sport from the 1948 to 2000. While the book concentrates on the Royal Navy, foreign weapons are included where necessary, while other British organizations such as the Merchant Navy, and the Cost Guard and Customs are also dealt with. Appendices cover subjects such as the dating, collecting and conservation of swords. The comprehensive nature of the work has not been attempted before and the work will appeal to a wide range of naval enthusiasts and historians, collectors of weapons, fencers and reenactors.

Oak Island and its Lost Treasure
The Untold Story of the British Militarys Role in the Island Flood Tunnel
Graham Harris Les MacPhie Civil engineers Graham Harris and Les MacPhie have spent over a decade investigating the enigma of Nova Scotias Oak Island. In this new edition of their book, they set out the previously unknown story of how complex and expensive engineering work was undertaken to create an elaborate flood tunnel on the island. Built to frustrate treasure seekers attempting to get at the valuables buried decades earlier at the bottom of the islands Money Pit, the tunnel has admirably served its purpose. It has ensured that all efforts up to now to recover the treasure have been unsuccessful. Oak Island poses two different challenges for treasure seekers. There is a deep mineshaft, at the bottom of which the treasure lies. The authors offer evidence that this treasure came from the wreck of a Spanish galleon in the seventeenth century. Even more mystifying than the mineshaft is the complex tunnel, which links it to the ocean. Harris and MacPhie have determined that the project would have required a labor force of over 100 men to supplement a small force of experienced miners. The work would have taken almost two years to complete. In new chapters written for this edition, they present the evidence they have discovered in British military history records which shows who commanded this force, how it reached Nova Scotia, and when the work was carried out.

Liberty or Death!
The Life and Campaigns of Richard L. Vowell: British Legionnnaire and Commander - Hero and Patriot of the Americas
Maria Pez Victor This is the story of Richard Longfield Vowell, an audacious and intrepid young English adventurer who abandoned his studies at Oxford in 1817 to fight against the Spanish Empire that had ruled Latin America for 300 years. It is also the story of the little known British Legion, formed of English and Irish volunteers, which became an integral part of Simn Bolvars patriot army. The British Legion played a crucial role in training the patriot forces to face Spanish troops battle-hardened in the Peninsular Wars. With the words Liberty or Death! emblazoned on a black banner, Bolvar set out to liberate Venezuela, and indeed, South America. For the bold and the idealistic, his quest was the stuff of dreams, and in England, there had never before been such intense interest in the destiny of the Spanish colonies. Bolvar lacked a modern army and with England awash with officers and soldiers demobilized from the Peninsular Wars, he took the opportunity to obtain campaign-seasoned fighting men. So it was that in distant Venezuela, Vowell and fewer than 2,000 other British volunteers, distinguished themselves in battle. In Chile, there was a desperate need for a navy to counter Spanish warships and so Bernardo OHiggins sought British officers to help form the celebrated First Chilean Squadron. Richard Vowell was recruited by the British naval hero, Admiral Lord Thomas Cochrane, to sail with the Chilean Squadron, and he became Commander of the Infantry Marines. He took part in the final naval battle that vanquished forever the Spanish Navy in the Americas.
