# Lesson Plan Thursday: TEK: (4) Foundations for functions.

The student understands the importance of the skills required to manipulate symbols in order to solve problems and uses the necessary algebraic skills required to simplify algebraic expressions and solve equations and inequalities in problem situations. The student is expected to: (A) find specific function values, simplify polynomial expressions, transform and solve equations, and factor as necessary in problem situations; Objective: The students will factor polynomial expressions. Hook: After the quiz the students will be given two practice problems on the board. They are to
2 factor g ( x) from Mondays lesson and solve for x and factor h( x) 4 x 2 x 56 and solve for x.

They will need to factor using pencil and paper and then model the problems with algebra tiles. The teacher will then ask two students to factor and solve the two problems on the board. Instruction: The teacher will then give an in class assignment that will take up the rest of todays class period and all of Fridays class period. The assignment is as follows: The students will be divided into groups with 4 or 5 students in each group. Each group will create a board game that will help students practice factoring different polynomials that are similar to the ones the students have practiced in class and for homework. Each member will be assigned a role in the group. The groups will need to work together in order to receive the best grade possible. Each group will be evaluated by the rest of the class on how well the game helps them practice factoring polynomials. Each member of each group will also be evaluated by their group members on how well the group member participated and helped. The individual grade

will be determined by this evaluation. There will also be a group grade based on the overall game and the class evaluations. The students will use Google Drive to collaboratively create a document for Game Rules, computer-generated game pieces, and specific factoring problems and/or questions. Materials: see attached for copies of assignment for students and art supplies in order to make the games Assessment: The students will show mastery of objective if they can create problems within the game that are of various difficulty levels and are factorable. Instruction: The students will continue to work on their group assignment from the previous class period. The students and the teacher as groups will rotate and play the different games that each group has made and evaluate the groups according to the attached rubric. Materials Needed: attached rubric Assessment: The students will show mastery of the objective if they can factor 80% of the polynomials in each game.
