Case 2229 Design of Layered Vessels Using Flat Ribbon Wound Cylindrical Shells Section VIII, Division 1 Inquiry: Under what conditions may layered vessels using at ribbon wound cylindrical shells be used in the construction of layered pressure vessels under the rules of Section VIII, Division 1, Part ULW? Reply: It is the opinion of the Committee that layered vessels using at ribbon wound cylindrical shells may be used in the construction of layered pressure vessels under the rules of Section VIII, Division 1, Part ULW, provided the following requirements are met. (a) Layered at ribbon wound cylindrical shells shall meet all requirements of concentric wrapped vessels in Section VIII, Division 1, Part ULW, except as modied by this Case. (b) Additional General Requirements are as follows: (1) The design temperature of the vessel shall not be warmer than the temperatures shown in Table 1; (2) Materials of construction shall be limited to those shown in Table 1, except for 5%, 8%, and 9% nickel steel materials which are permitted only for inner shells; (3) The inside diameter of the inner shell shall not be less than 1 ft nor greater than 12 ft; (4) The minimum thickness of the inner shell is 16 of the total wall thickness. The actual thickness of the inner shell must satisfy the requirements of paras. (c)(6)(a) and (c)(6)(b) below; (5) An even number of shell layers shall be used; (6) Each shell layer shall be lled with helically wound at ribbons in a crossing pattern (see Figs. 1 and 2); (7) The helical winding angle shall not be less than 15 deg nor greater than 30 deg.; (8) Except for the welded portions at the ends of the ribbon wound shell and at nozzles, the helical gaps between ribbons in a winding shall not exceed 18 in.; (9) The at ribbon dimensional constraints are: (a) minimum width is 2 in.; (b) maximum width is 5 in.; (c) minimum thickness is 18 in.; (d) maximum thickness is 516 in.;

Vent holes per Section VIII, Division 1, para. ULW-76 are not required within the ribbon windings. (c) Design of ribbon wound cylindrical shells requires a procedure where initial geometry is assumed and checked to determine its adequacy. The following design requirements shall be used instead of those provided in Section VIII, Division 1, para. ULW-16: (1) Nomenclature P p internal design pressure, psi. (see Section VIII, Division 1, para. UG-21) p helical winding angle, deg Ri p inside radius of inner shell, in. Rj p outside radius of inner shell, in. Rm p mean radius of inner shell, in. p (Ri + Rj) / 2 Ro p outside radius of completed ribbon wound cylindrical shell, in. R p corrective radius of ribbon layers, in. p Rj + (Ro Rj) cos2 J p ratio of inner shell thickness to total wall thickness p (Rj Ri) / (Ro Ri) S1 p maximum allowable stress value of inner shell material, psi. (see Section VIII, Division 1, para. UG-23)

The Committees function is to establish rules of safety, relating only to pressure integrity, governing the construction of boilers, pressure vessels, transport tanks and nuclear components, and inservice inspection for pressure integrity of nuclear components and transport tanks, and to interpret these rules when questions arise regarding their intent. This Code does not address other safety issues relating to the construction of boilers, pressure vessels, transport tanks and nuclear components, and the inservice inspection of nuclear components and transport tanks. The user of the Code should refer to other pertinent codes, standards, laws, regulations or other relevant documents.
