Coin Acceptor CC-16 / MC-16

Introduction

2. Introduction
This document aims to describe procedures for calibrating and maintaining coin acceptors Coin Mechanism CC-16 and MC-16 used in Atronic gaming machines. Important: Do not unplug the coin acceptor while it is active (indicated by lit green LED). This can cause damage to the acceptor or to the host machine!

3. Damper Weight Recommendation

The damper weight is utilized in conjunction with a lever arm in the comparitor coin chute, to bias the falling coin against a reference surface (the rail), in order to closely align the coin with the reference coin so that an accurate comparison can be made by the sensor coils and associated electronics. The chart below shows damper weight recommendation depending on the coin weight. It was established as a guideline only and may be deviated from for a special coin and machine cicumstances. The coins speed and striking force on the lever depends on its falling heights and is varying in real life applications. In some case excessive rejection of valid coins may be remedied by using the next higher damper weight. Using too heavy of a weight can slow down the coin significantly to where it will be rejected because of a time out. Note: There are customized MC-16 acceptors available for 1 and 2 coins. Use only these acceptors for bimetallic Euro coins. 4. Selectivity Potentiometer Adjustment

Each acceptor leaving the factory is adjusted to give excellent discrimination against false coins. However, some high quality false coins may need a finer adjustment. Before any adjustsments are made, the acceptor should be cleaned thoroughly with a brush to remove all dust and debris from the unit. The reference coin/token can also be exchanged for a newer or older one to improve the acceptance. It is also recommened that testing should also be carried after a gaming machine has undergone a denomination change or if the coin acceptor has been dropped. Full Reject Turn potentiometer fully clockwise and feed the proper coins into the mechanism, all coins are to be rejected. Full Accept Turn potentiometer fully anti-clockwise and feed the proper coins into the mechanism, all coins are to be accepted. Discrimination Adjustment This procedure should be performed after all other adjustments are completed (sensor coils adjustment, rail adjustment, damper weight and other mechanical checks), but can also be done as a prior test. 1. Adjust the potentiometer clockwise until the proper coin is rejected. 2. Insert a high quality false coin (if available). It should also be rejected. 3. Turn potentiometer anti-clockwise until the proper coin is accepted. Drop at least six proper coins. They should all be accepted and the high quality false coin should be rejected. If not repeat the procedure. Note: Coin Acceptors which do not meet the full reject / full accept criteria are to be replaced or recalibrated.

5. Air Balancing the Sensor Coils

Calibrating the sensor coils by means of an oscilloscope.

5.1 Overview
Air balancing the sensor coils is one of the most important adjustments made to the coin acceptor. Air balancing simply means to adjust the gap between the two coils, to create an electrical field that is equal in both coin slots. It is important that both coil sensor screws on the comparitor are adjusted to an equal depth into the sensor coil body. Calibrating should be done after installing a new sensor coil assembly into the comparitor and as maintenance for optimum performance. Tools Required : 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Plastic Tokens Adjusting screwdriver and 1/16 hex allen key Coinsticks or coins and scotchtape Oscilloscope Bench Power Supply

5.2 Adjustment Procedure

Preliminary Setup: 1. Connect the scope test probe to the Test Point at Pin 4 of J2 (the pin without a cable connected). 2. Connect scope ground connection to Pin 6 of J3. 3. Connect the bench power supply and set the supply voltage to +12V. 4. Set the scope VOLT/DIV. to 500 mV per division. Set the scope TIME/DIV to 1 ms per division. Depending on type of oscilloscope, some waveform positioning may be necessary to view the whole waveform. 5. Use the plastic token chip provided with comparitor (similar in diameter) to the actual coin or token to be used as the sample coin and insert this chip into the sensor coils, indicated by the label Slide To Replace Coin. The plastic token positions the coils in their optimum location to simulate typical operating conditions. 6. a) For optimizing performance: Using the 1/16 allen head screw driver, turn both of the Sensor Coil Adjustment Screws counter-clockwise approximately 2 full turns. Check the Coil Mounting Screw holding the sensor coils together is firmly secured. b) For new or rebuilt Sensor Coil Assemblies: Using the 1/16 allen head screw driver, turn the Sensor Coil Adjusting Screw clockwise until screw just touch against the center coils metal plate stop. Make sure both screws are seated with equal depth into the sensor coil body.

Sensor Coil Adjusting Screws

Adjustment 1. Start with top screw first and alternate between top and bottom screws in short intervals, with clockwise rotation, until achieving the smallest amplitude of the waveform possible. Typically 80 to 200 mV is considered to be a proper value.

6. Rail Insert Adjustment

The rail insert adjustment allows to optimize the position of the resident coin to the falling coin. In order to get the best comparison of coins they need to eclipse each other when they are in the center of the sensor coil. The rail insert adjustment allows this exact match to occur. Performing this adjustment optimizes against false coins. The adjustment also allows compensation for worn parts to bring a highly used acceptor back to optimum operating parameters. Coinstick Method 1. Remove the plastic chip token from the Sample Holder and insert Coin Sticks into the coils. 2. Using the allen screw driver turn the Rail Insert Adjustment Screw counter-clockwise until rail insert is against the rail body. Remove any slack in the assembly by applying light pressure against the coils, towards the rail assembly. Coin and Tape Method If Coin Sticks are unavailable, use the coin and tape method instead. 1. Insert coin into the Sample Holder. 2. Apply tape to second identical coin and lower it into the other coil gap. 3. Position the taped coin in parallel to and eclipse the sample coin, observe the waveform for lowest amplitude and tape the coin in place onto the mainplate. Adjustment 1. Using the allen screw driver turn the Rail Insert Adjustment Screw slowly clockwise observing the waveform. It should lower the amplitude. Keep adjusting clockwise until the smallest amplitude is achieved.

7. Coin Security Kit

Recent CC-16 modells feature a Coin Security Kit not allowing to remove the sample coin without loosening a nut on backside of the acceptor. If you are using an older CC-16 version, it might not be equipped with this kit. This mounting instruction describes how to install it to an older CC-16. The ASP CC Coin Security Kit CC-16 and the new sticker ASP DL CC16 Coin Security is obtainable from Atronic. Coil Mounting Screw Washer Hex nut figure 1
