You are led by Gods Spirit - Romans 8:1-14

I. There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus Romans 7: 24-25: 24 Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death? 25 Thank God! The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord. In Romans 7:7-25, Paul reveals the truth of the impossibility of living a righteous life by depending on your flesh-your own ability. He gives us a picture of what a persons life is like whose mind is focused on the flesh (their own ability)-they are condemned in their mind In Romans 8, Paul reveals the answer to the condemned mind: a mind focused on the Spirit: relying upon Jesus and His gift of righteousness Rom 8:1 THEREFORE, [there is] now no condemnation (no adjudging guilty of wrong) for those who are in Christ Jesus, who live [and] walk not after the dictates of the flesh, but after the dictates of the Spirit. AMP In Christ means: G1722 en: A primary preposition denoting (fixed) position (in place, time or state), that is, a relation of rest: a fixed place of rest Those whose minds are fixed on Jesus and are resting in what Jesus did for them will live free from condemnation Flesh: mans ability: self-reliance, self-improvement, self-righteousness Spirit: Gods ability in man; the gift of righteousness in Jesus In many translations of the Bible the phrase, who live and walk not after the dictates of the flesh, but after the Spirit, is not in verse 1. However, many translators included it here to clarify what the Apostle Paul is teaching. He is contrasting very clearly the difference between the life of a person who has their mind on the flesh (Romans 7:14-25) and the life of a person who has their mind on the Spirit (Romans 8:1-3) In the KJV it says, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. The Strongs defines the word walk as G4043 peripateo per-ee-pat-eh'-o From G4012 and G3961; to tread all around, that is, walk at large (especially as proof of ability); to follow (as a companion): - be occupied with According to this definition, this Scripture means that there is no condemnation in the heart of those who are not occupied with the flesh, but are occupied with the Spirit. Their thoughts are not on their ability or their works, but on Gods ability in them and Jesus finished work on the cross. They listen to and agree with the Fathers good opinion of them: that there is no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus!

In Romans 7:14-24, the Apostle Paul explained what a mind occupied with the flesh thinks like and how it produces condemnation in a persons heart, but in Roman 7:25-8:3, he explains what a mind occupied with the Spirit thinks like: there is no condemnation in their heart because they realize who they truly are in Jesus. They are in a fixed place of rest in Him! Rom 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life [which is] in Christ Jesus [the law of our new being] has freed me from the law of sin and of death. "the law of the Spirit of life," Rom_8:2, i.e., the animating principle by which the Holy Spirit acts as the imparter of life- The Vines New Testament The life that the Holy Spirit imparts to us in Christ Jesus is our new identity. Because you have been given a new identity, you are forever righteous, forgiven, accepted, blessed, qualified, successful, victorious, healed, prosperous, peaceful, and joyful in Christ. You are free from the law of sin and death (condemnation, rejection, the curse of the law, failure, defeat, sickness and poverty, anxiety, fear, and depression) because of your new life in Christ! Rom 8:3 For God has done what the Law could not do, [its power] being weakened by the flesh [the entire nature of man without the Holy Spirit]. Sending His own Son in the guise of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, [God] condemned sin in the flesh [subdued, overcame, deprived it of its power over all who accept that sacrifice], God did what the law could not do because we were weak in our own ability to keep it perfectly. He sent Jesus to be a sacrifice for sin. He deprived sin of its power to condemn us by making us perfect through His one sacrifice. Weve been made righteous through faith in Jesus! Heb 10:12-14 says, But our High Priest offered Himself to God as a single sacrifice For sins, good for all time. Then He sat down in the place of honor at God's right hand. 13 There He waits until His enemies are humbled and made a footstool under His feet. 14 For by that one offering He forever made perfect those who are being made holy. NLT Jesus deprived sin of its power to condemn those who accept that His sacrifice made them perfect forever in Gods sight. Sin (condemnation) loses its power in our lives when we receive the gift of righteousness! II. Renew your mind to the Truth of who you are! Rom 8:4 So that the righteous and just requirement of the Law might be fully met in us who live and move not in the ways of the flesh but in the ways of the Spirit [our lives governed not by the standards and according to the dictates of the flesh, but controlled by the Holy Spirit]. AMP When we accept the truth that we are perfectly righteous in Jesus, the Spirit brings out the fruit of righteousness in our lives, something the law could never do because of the weakness of our flesh. When we are occupied with the Spirit- have our minds on what the Spirit is saying to us and who we are in Jesus-the Spirit produces abundant fruit in our lives Gal 5:18-25 But if you are guided (led) by the [Holy] Spirit, you are not subject to the Law. 19 Now the doings (practices) of the flesh are clear (obvious): they are 34

immorality, impurity, indecency, 20 Idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, anger (ill temper), selfishness, divisions (dissensions), party spirit (factions, sects with peculiar opinions, heresies), 21 Envy, drunkenness, carousing, and the like. I warn you beforehand, just as I did previously, that those who do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the [Holy] Spirit [the work which His presence within accomplishes] is love, joy (gladness), peace, patience (an even temper, forbearance), kindness, goodness (benevolence), faithfulness, 23 Gentleness (meekness, humility), self-control (self-restraint, continence). Against such things there is no law [that can bring a charge]. 24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus (the Messiah) have crucified the flesh (the godless human nature) with its passions and appetites and desires. 25 If we live by the [Holy] Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. [If by the Holy Spirit we have our life in God, let us go forward walking in line, our conduct controlled by the Spirit.] AMP Verses 19-21 describes what the flesh (mans ability) has the power to produce in our lives: death (negative emotions & actions) Verses 22-25 describes what the Spirit in us has the power to produce in our lives: life and peace (positive emotions & actions) How do we walk in the Spirit? Rom 8:5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. KJV Rom 8:5 For those who are according to the flesh and are controlled by its unholy desires set their minds on and pursue those things which gratify the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit and are controlled by the desires of the Spirit set their minds on and seek those things which gratify the [Holy] Spirit. Rom 8:6 Now the mind of the flesh [which is sense and reason without the Holy Spirit] is death [death that comprises all the miseries arising from sin, both here and hereafter]. But the mind of the [Holy] Spirit is life and [soul] peace [both now and forever]. AMP The word mind in verse 5 comes from the Greek word: G5426 phroneo

From G5424; to exercise the mind, that is, entertain or have an opinion; think The mind of the flesh thinks on its own opinion of a situation and depends on its own ability which produces death (Galatians 5:19-21) The mind of the Spirit listens to and thinks upon Gods opinion of a situation and depends on His Spirit within him which produces life and peace (Galatians 5:22-25) Rom 8:4-7 in the Message Bible says, And now what the law code asked for but we couldn't deliver is accomplished as we, instead of redoubling our own efforts, simply embrace what the Spirit is doing in us. 5 Those who think they can do it on their own end up obsessed with measuring their own moral muscle but never get around to exercising it in real life. Those who trust God's action in them find that God's Spirit is in them--living and breathing God! 6 Obsession with self in these matters is a dead end; attention to God leads us out into the open, into a spacious, free life. 7 Focusing on the self is the opposite of focusing on God.

III.

You are not in the flesh, you are in Christ and led by Gods Spirit

Rom 8:7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. Rom 8:8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. Rom 8:9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. KJV To fully understand this passage of Scripture, we must understand that there is a difference between walking after the flesh and being in the flesh walking after the flesh: a mind occupied with its own ability and works being in the flesh: a person who is not in Christ. If you placed your faith in Jesus you are forever in the Spirit, regardless of where your mind may be. In these three verses, the Apostle Paul explains that those who are in the flesh cannot please God, but quickly reminds you that you are not in the flesh, you are in the Spirit because Gods Spirit lives in you through Jesus! If we find ourselves thinking on the flesh and our hearts become filled with negative emotions (death), all we need to do is remember who we are. We are Gods children and we are led by His Spirit! Turn your thoughts back to Jesus and let Him live His life through you! Rom 8:10 But if Christ lives in you, [then although] your [natural] body is dead by reason of sin and guilt, the spirit is alive because of [the] righteousness [that He imputes to you]. Rom 8:11 And if the Spirit of Him Who raised up Jesus from the dead dwells in you, [then] He Who raised up Christ Jesus from the dead will also restore to life your mortalbodies through His Spirit Who dwells in you. Rom 8:12 So then, brethren, we are debtors, but not to the flesh [we are not obligated to our carnal nature], to live [a life ruled by the standards set up by the dictates] of the flesh. Rom 8:13 For if you live according to [the dictates of] the flesh, you will surely die. But if through the power of the [Holy] Spirit you are [habitually] putting to death (making extinct, deadening) the [evil] deeds prompted by the body, you shall [really and genuinely] live forever. Rom 8:14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. AMP Awake to Righteousness! You are no longer in the flesh. You are living in the Spirit! You are dead to sin, but alive in Christ! Condemnation no longer controls your life! Youve been made a righteous son or daughter of God, and you are led by His Spirit! Romans 8: 11-14 in the Message Bible says, It stands to reason, doesn't it, that if the alive-and-present God who raised Jesus from the dead moves into your life, he'll do the same thing in you that he did in Jesus, bringing you alive to himself? When God lives and breathes in you (and he does, as surely as he did in Jesus), you are delivered from that dead life. With his Spirit living in you, your body will be as alive as Christ's! 12 So don't you see that we don't owe this old do-it-yourself life one red cent. 13 There's nothing in it for us, nothing at all. The best thing to do is give it a decent burial and get on with your new life. 14 God's Spirit beckons. There are things to do and places to go! 36
