LITR 201: Guide for Phase 5 Individual Project

The Phase 5 Individual Project is your final exam. Your finished assignment should be 6 pages in length and consist of the following:

-- 4 double-spaced pages responding to the questions about literature -- 1 title page -- 1 APA list of references for the literary works discussed in the assignment

Choose any 4 of the 6 questions below and write one double-spaced page per question:

1. Select one short story read in LITR 240 and any two of the following literary terms: setting, characterization, plot, conflict, point of view, symbolism, theme, tone, or irony. Write one double-spaced page of literary analysis. (Optional: Include 1-2 direct quotes of 1-2 sentences each.)

2. Select one poem from the textbook that you have not written about previously in class. Select any two of the following terms and write one double-spaced page of poetry analysis: imagery, metaphor, simile, personification, symbolism, word choice, theme, tone, or rhythm/sound. (Optional: Include 1-2 direct quotes of 1-2 lines each.) (*See suggested poems below)

Suggested poems for Question 2:

"Fox Trot Fridays" by Rita Dove, p. 473 "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening" by Robert Frost, p. 460

"God's Grandeur" by Gerard Hopkins, p. 457 "To Autumn" by John Keats, p. 409 "Dulce et Decorum Est" by Wilfred Own, p. 407 "You're Missing" by Bruce Springsteen, p. 368 "When in Disgrace" by Shakespeare, p. 581

3. Choose two of the following literary terms and write one double-spaced page of analysis on Trifles: setting, characterization, plot, conflict, stage directions, symbolism, theme, or dialogue. (Optional: Include 1-2 direct quotes of 1-2 sentences each.)

4. Choose any two: a short story, a poem, or a play from the LITR reading list and write one page comparing/contrasting the themes expressed in the two works.

Examples:

Theme of marriage in "The Birthmark" and Trifles. Theme of discrimination in "Battle Royal" and "Harlem" Theme of religion in "A Good Man is Hard to Find" and "Pied Beauty" Theme of war in "How to Tell a True War Story" and "They" You are not limited to these suggestions! Be creative and choose any two works that explore the same theme (keeping in mind that different literary works often give very different perspectives on the same theme).

5. Which of all the works we read is your favorite work and why? In what ways do you think it will make a lasting impact on you personally and professionally? Feel free to share your personal thoughts and experiences that helped you connect with the work.

6. Final considerations: Discuss how literature can provide a reflection of life which can help us understand our own struggles, triumphs, values and moral codes and increase our empathy for others. What is one thing you learned about yourself this term as a result of gazing into literatures mirror?

Your Phase 5 Individual Project should be formatted in correct APA style using the APA Template posted in the Instructor Files on the Course Home page in LITR.

Your Phase 5 Individual Project is due no later than midnight on Tuesday, February 12, 2013.

Your assignment should contain a list of APA references for the literary works you discuss in your Phase 5 Individual Project. For tips on creating the references list, be sure to attend/listen to Live Chat 10 and/or see the example below.

To create a References list, add an additional page to the end of the assignment, write References on the top line, and create an APA reference for each literary work you discuss in your Phase 5 IP using the following models:
