Activity 8 Helicopter Happening Objective/Aim: Null Hypothesis: Hypothesis: To investigate the landing of the copter.

The landing of the copter will not change with the change of the shape of the body of the copter. The copter can land straight to downwards when the shape of the body change in triangular shape. Manipulated variable: The shape of the body of the copter. Controlling variable: The type of paper The height where the copter is dropped. Responding variable: The landing of the copter. Define operationally: The drop of the copter is straight to downwards in Another words is perpendicularly downwards on its body / base. Materials: Scissors Ruler Worksheet Helicopter pattern on next page

Method: 1. The pattern for the rotating object was cut out follow the assembly directions carefully. 2. The device was tested to find how it works.

Result: Shape of the copter (manipulated variables) Observation (responding variables) The copter has landed upside down. The copter did not dropped straight downwards. Inference The air resistance is greater. The wind had caused the copter to land upside down.

The copter has landed in straight line. Its body touches the ground.

The shape of the body have overcome the air resistance and the wind.

It dropped perpendicularly downwards.

What are some possible variables that could affect how it flies? The independent variables; 1. The number of the blades 2. The Length of the blades 3. The types of the paper used 4. The height the copter let to fly. The dependent variables; 1. The speed of the copter 2. The accuracy of the landing on the target 3. The time taken to touch the land.

Mastery of Knowledge At the end of these activities, answer the following questions:

1.

What have you learnt from these activities?

(5 marks)

This activity has taught me on how the variables have an effect on an experiments or investigation. There are three types of variables that we can see during experiments or investigations. There are manipulated variables, controlled variables and responding variables. A variable that deliberately changed is called a manipulated variable. The variable that may change as a result of changing the manipulated variables is called the responding variables. The last one is the controlled variables where we controlled variables through out the experiment. This variable is very important in experiments so that we can discover something.

2.

Which part of the primary science curriculum teaches this particular topic?

3.

Discuss how you can use these activities in your teaching and learning? (5 marks)

This is a very interesting activity. We can use this activity as an assessment to the students. By doing this activity we actually can asses our students understanding in variables. We can ask the students to create their own copter and then ask them to improve on it so that it can fly better. This will help the students to identify what are the variables which affect the flying of their copter. We also can ask them to find as many as variables that they could find and test them all. This will make them understand more on this topic and also help them a lot in identifying the variables. 4. Creativity is an important element of Thinking and Working Scientifically. What are the creative characteristics in the process skill of identifying and controlling variables? (5 marks)

As we see science is always creative. So what ever we do scientifically there is creativeness in it. Therefore in identifying and controlling variables there are some creativeness such as identifying and logical thinking. We must very creative in identifying the variables in an experiment or activity. This is because there might be a lot or few variables in a activity. So we must be creative to identifying them. Besides that we also must have logic thinking. If we identify variables we must able to think is it logic it can be the variable. In addition we must also have to no how to relate them in our experiment. Relating things also one of creative thinking. So after identifying variables we must think logically and must able to relate them with the aim, hypothesis and also the results.

5. In developing childrens ability to think and work scientifically, there are a number of techniques a teacher could do to encourage the development of creativity. Discuss some of these things you can do? (5 marks)

There are many ways to improve students creative thinkings. One of them is cooperative learning. This cooperative learning is something where the students share their ideas with other students while they learning. So when they share their ides and thoughts they not only delivering but also absorbing/listening other students ideas and thought. So the assimilate and accommodates their new knowledge and produce a new idea. This new idea in other word we call as creative thinking. Besides this cooperative learning letting the students to communicate with the apparatus also can encourage development of creativity. When they them self interact with the apparatus they actually learning something by themselves and understands it very well. This will stimulate their brain to produce new ideas and make them think creative.
