International Symposium in Visual Arts Education: Sydney/Illinois Connections

This international symposium is a collaborative initiative between Australian Catholic University Faculty of Education NSW, Illinois State University and the Visual Arts and Design Educators Association of NSW. With a view to enriching understanding of Visual Arts education in a global forum, this program builds on research currently being conducted in art education by international colleagues in Illinois and Sydney about the nature of curriculum development and the teaching of art and design in secondary schools in NSW. The symposium aims to offer visiting Illinois educators further insights into our practices in teaching and learning and curriculum development in NSW and for NSW art and design educators to learn more about Illinois pre-service art teacher education and schooling. The program is timely because it provides the opportunity for art teachers to reflect on and develop their current practices in the classroom in the adaptation of recent research about art making and art criticism. Discussion will move beyond the reductive approach to curriculum in the Arts as proposed in national curriculum agendas in Australia and the USA.
