I believe that communication is the one of the most important abilities humans posses. The writ ten word records our experiences and ideas for future generations. Thus, the recording and dissemination of information belongs in the hands of competent, conscientious experts like myself . I believe that collaboration and teamwork ensures the best possible results, and that respect and consideration for other people makes the entire writing, editing, and reading cycle possible. Language is a powerful tool that takes experience and training to craft well, and I strive to represent myself as a professional in my publishing work.

Dente Hardcover 240 pgs. 10.5 x 13.5 Dr. Robert Tands expertise in the field of dentistry is charmingly complemented by an artful way with words in the comprehensive collection Dente. Dr. Tand has been plying his trade in Manhattan for twenty years, and telling ivory-tickling tales at family barbecues for almost as long. Happily married for fifteen years and the father of three, Dr. Tand is a native New Yorker who graduated from the New York University College of Dentistry. The doctors greatest passion besides molars and cuspids are anecdotes and articles, and he offers a text rich with insight into the particulars of the dental trade. 8

Doctor Robert Tand, D.D.S. Tand & Sons Dentistry 1717 Norman Avenue New York, New York 11385 olivia.croom@ooliganpress.pdx.edu October 18, 2011 Kat Banks, Editor Emily Gravlin, Editor Karen Giezyng, Editor Abbreviated Press Portland, Oregon Dear Editors, I am interested in finding a publisher for my essay collection entitled Dente. Each piece focuses on some aspect of dentistry, from personal anecdotes from dentistry school to operating my own practice, to more informational essays about the most modern technology used in the industry. I attempt to address the question about why America is so focused on the oral; from food and sex to our politicians smiles and speeches, in many ways, I believe, America holds higher standards for the mouth than any other body part. The essays range from lyrical, which are no more than 500 words, to personal essays, the longest of which is 4,800 words. I chose Abbr. Press because you all encourage a mixing and blending of genres. The American fixation on the mouth is such a complex issue that I do not feel one form of nonfiction could properly address it and hold a readers attention. The audience for this book includes those who enjoyed Richard Selzers Confessions of a Knife (Harcourt Brace, 1996), the writings of David Foster Wallace, and anyone interested in why some smiles invoke absolute trust while others make our hands go cold. I attended New York University School of Dentistry and own and operate a successful personal practice with my sons William and Peter, which is a great joy to me. I have been published in industry journals including Dental Anthropology Journal, International Journal of Pediatric Dentistry, and Journal of Periodontal Research. Other than a few creative writing classes as an undergraduate, this is my first attempt at creative nonfiction. Enclosed please find three sample essays, one lyrical, one personal, and one informational. The manuscript is finished and ready to be sent to you if the samples meet with your satisfaction. Thank you for your consideration. Sincerely,

Dr. Robert Tand

Josh Winston, BookReview.com

Filaments, the debut collection by celebrated author Mary Breaden, is a collection of flash fiction and the photography that inspired it. Breadens writing is evokative and brash, even-tempered and intelligent, shocking and beautiful. Part artbook and part literature, this debut collection is sure to enthrall devotees of both photography and writing. Filaments is a look inside the eyes and brains of humanity, and it is sure to leave an imprint on everyone who picks it up.

Abbreviated Press

Filaments Paperback 80 pages 5 x 5 Mary Breaden originally hails from Winchester, Virginia, but now calls Portland, Oregon, home. She first learned of William Eggleston's photography while attending the University of Massachuetts for her Master of Fine Arts degree. His portraits inspired her to write flash fiction based on his subject's expressions. This led to Mary to create Filaments, a collection of works revolving around Eggleston's work. From 200609, she was an assistant acquistions editor for The Massachusetts Review. Mary is currently a contributor to The Burnside Review and printer at Bridgetown Printers. When she isn't writing or creating art, Mary is an avid bicyclist and aspiring bread baker. 18

October 18, 2011 Emily Gravlin Kat Banks Karen Giezyng Abbr. Press 1000 SW Broadway Portland, OR 97210 Dear Editors: I am submitting my collection of flash fiction stories, Filaments. These stories all revolve around revelatory moments which the photography of William Eggleston inspired me to write. I began to write many of my stories by focusing on one of his subjects expression and then letting them lead me to the heart of the story. I began writing as an undergraduate at Portsmouth College in Portsmouth, Massachusetts, and have since then received my M.F.A. from the University of Massachusetts. I began as a short story writer, but during my M.F.A. program, I discovered the genre of flash fiction, and I havent looked back. My stories have been published in Hop, The Massachusetts Review, and The Burnside Press, as well as in numerous zines throughout Portland, where I moved at the end of 2009. The links to these literary journals and e-zines can be accessed electronically through my blog: www.breadinthecity.com. At the start of this year, I printed my own zine as well, Bread in the City, and I have a supportive local readership. I would love to work with Abbr. Press because I feel that you value writing that focuses on lifes most unique moments, just as I do. As requested, I have included twenty pages of my work in this attachment. October 26, 2011 Dear Mary Breaden, Thank you for submitting Filaments to Abbreviated Press. We think it would be a fine addition to our catalog of books and are interested in publishing it. Your flash fiction stories are exciting, and we plan to pursue publication in tandem with the photographs of William Eggleston that inspired your writing. We would like to schedule a time to meet and talk further about Filaments. Please contact our office at your earliest convenience. Everyone here at Abbr. Press are looking forward to meeting you soon. Congratulations and welcome to Abbr. Press. Best, Karen Giezyng Abbr. Press Editor karen.giezyng@abbrpress.com (503) 548-1234

Abbr. Press editors rationale for acceptance: Filaments was an immediate acquisition for Abbr. Press due to its fantastic style and potential for creative publication. While we love flash fiction and get many worthy submissions in the genre, the opportunity to publish a book that features art by a well-known photographer accompanied by the truly inspired writing of Mary Breaden fulfills our goals in breaking new grounds in short-form publication. The prospect of producing a quality art book in small format for an affordable price accompanied by the fact that no comprehensive collection of William Egglestons photography has ever been published made Filaments an instant hit with Abbr. Press editors just as it will be with our readers and Eggleston aficionados everywhere.

7/1/13 9:15 PM

In Book Marketing and Promotion, I developed a marketing campaign for a mock publication. I chose to work on a hypothetical new release from bestselling writer Jeffrey Eugenides. I started with this, a basic overview of the book.

Book Title: The Plutocracy Platform I chose this title for its alliterative catchiness and because it references two of the books themes: politics and class struggle. Author: Jeffrey Eugenides I chose Eugenides as my author because hes a gifted, Pulitzer Prize-winning writer and because I respect the contemporary literary style of his work; I would be honored to publish one of his books. Description: In the wake of a devastating political scandal and the lossforeverof the chance to hold Americas highest political office, millionaire Ward Sloan retreats to a tucked-away estate in Oyster Bay Cove, New York, to write his memoirs and stay out of the spotlight. Sloan cant escape his problems, however, especially when he begins getting anonymous death threats and disconcerting visits from both his mistress and his estranged wife. The escalating evil plaguing the former politician and financial consultant forces him to begin questioning the chain of events that led him to his current positionand his own sanity. Release Date: November 2012 Release date chosen to coincide with the 2012 United States presidential election. Publisher: Farrar, Straus and Giroux Farrar, Straus and Giroux is a respected company with a long history of producing fine literary fiction. They are a subsidiary of Random House and thus have the marketing budget of a major publishing house. Media: Full Facebook page with bio and photos for Ward Sloan Plutocracy Platform twitter updated with book news, campaign-style Plutocracy Platform web site (members only see below) Billboards in strategic (political & book-buying) cities, campaign-style Various other advertising, as per usual Eugenides book Collateral: Ward Sloan 2012 and The Plutocracy Platform campaign buttons Postcards with book information styled like a campaign mailer Plutocracy Platform web site (membership code with purchase of book) containing bonus content such as longer Ward Sloan bio, photos, video (campaign ads), secret signings, Oyster Bay house floor plan, etc.

Book Description

Inside cover copy

Ward Sloan could have been President. After revitalizing the Republican Party with his Plutocracy Platform, a policy that insists government belongs in the hands of the wealthy and powerful for the good of the people, Sloan coasts to an easy lead in the polls on the strength of his dashing good looks and potent charismabut everything comes crashing down on him when it is revealed that his wealth and reputation are built on a stolen fortune. Now a social pariah, Sloan must retreat to his estate in Oyster Bay Cove, New York. Holed up alone, trying to write his memoirs, Sloan is forced to face his pastthough he seems to remember less and less of it. He is flooded with hate mail, but a chain of anonymous death threats ominously stand out, warning him that his future could become just as violent as his past. By turns, his estranged wife and his mistress appear at the estate, both acting more bizarrely with each visit. Both seem possessed by a kind of terror that cant be explained, asking him questions he has no idea how to answer. Though formerly a financial consultant, Sloan cant seem to make the events in his life add up, and goes on a fact-finding mission to unearth his own secrets, before they potentially destroy him. Something has happened to the slick corporate world, the sumptuous life of moneyed luxury Ward Sloan has always inhabited, and someone wants Sloan silencedpossibly dead. Fighting progressive memory loss and a building psychosis, the only thing that can save him is the story he cant seem to find. Revitalizing that kind of novel known as the thriller, Jeffrey Eugenides craftily uses one man to examine the power plays of politics, the debilitating effects of mental illness and extreme anxiety, and the destructive bent of modern society. This gripping, tension-filled, taut-as-a-wire book is sure to engross Eugenides fans and newcomers alike.

Quotes: Any American who is prepared to run for president should automatically, by definition, be disqualified from ever doing so. Gore Vidal Democracy is when the indigent, and not the men of property, are the rulers. Aristotle Whenever a man has cast a longing eye on offices, a rottenness begins in his conduct. Thomas Jefferson Politics have no relation to morals. Niccolo Machiavelli

Farrar, Straus and Giroux German publishing conglomerate Georg von Holtzbrinck Publishing Group bought the majority of FSG from founder Roger W. Straus, Jr. in 1994; Holtzbrinck then bought 70 percent of Macmillan in 1995. FSG has been a subsidiary of Macmillan since that time. Farrar, Straus and Companywas founded in 1946 by Roger W. Straus and John C. Farrar. In 1964 Robert Girouxs name was added to the roster and the company became Farrar, Straus and Giroux. The firm is renowned for its international list of literary fiction, nonfiction, poetry and childrens books. Farrar, Straus and Giroux authors have won extraordinary acclaim over the years, including numerous National Book Awards, Pulitzer Prizes, and twenty-two Nobel Prizes in literature. Poetry has always played a pivotal role on the Farrar, Straus and Giroux list, which boasts some of the greatest names in modern verse, ranging from Elizabeth Bishop, Ted Hughes, and Philip Larkin to John Ashbery, Thom Gunn, and Les Murray. Other imprints include North Point Press; Hill and Wang; Faber and Faber, Inc.; Scientific American/Farrar, Straus and Giroux; FSG juvenile program Books for Young Readers; Graywolf Press; Drawn and Quarterly FSGs backlist is strong and varied and includes hundreds of books in a broad range of categories, from business to cooking to literature to poetry. They have many well-known and award-winning authors on their roster, which they emphasize in the About section of the web site. Notable titles include Night (Elie Wiesel); The Complete Stories (Flannery OConnor); Fahrenheit 451 (Ray Bradbury); Slouching Towards Bethlehem (Joan Didion); North (Seamus Heaney). In addition, they have many contemporary hits, like The Third Reich (Roberto Bolano) and A Long Way Gone (Ishmael Beah) a Starbucks-featured book. Their logo is a simple line drawing of three fish (one for each name). The simplicity of the drawing seems appropriate to their reputation as a renowned literary publisher of the old guard of publishings golden age. The FSG website is actually a page on Macmillans site, but it looks tastefully designed and elegant, befitting their reputation as an award-winning, literary publisher. The main page features a simple design that showcases one title front and center, but makes it easy to look for books by imprint or within categories like New Titles and Award Winners. There are also tabs for a seasonal catalogue, reading group guides, and FSG poetry to make navigation easy. The website really emphasizes FSGs history and legacy of quality writing.

It works by manipulating public perception so that ideas previously thought of as radical begin to seem acceptable over time. Move the Window and you change the debate. Change the debate and you change the country. This echoes the platform Ward Sloan runs onpersuading the American public that the wealthy should control the government.

Dear Mr. Clinton, Due to your long and patriotic service in American politics, your lasting popularity among the American public, and your reputation as a well-read and intelligent individual, we invite you to peruse the new novel from Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jeffrey Eugenides. In the wake of a devastating political scandal and the lossforeverof the chance to hold Americas highest political office, millionaire Ward Sloan retreats to a tucked-away estate in Oyster Bay Cove, New York, to write his memoirs and stay out of the spotlight. In The Plutocracy Platform you will find a critical, fictionalized treatment of the dangers of political power falling into the wrong hands, and the consequences of unethical behavior and betrayal of the American people. The Plutocracy Platform is both an indictment of the floundering state of politics in America and a close examination of the internal struggle between personal integrity and personal gratification. We hope this novel will provoke Americans to discuss these issues and to demand conscientiousness from their politicians. As a legendary former president, we welcome your contribution. Jeffrey Eugenides is one of the leading authors of our time, as evidenced by his many awards and vast readership. He holds degrees from Brown and Stanford Universities, and currently teaches young writers at Princeton University. His second novel, Middlesex, received the Pulitzer prize for fiction in 2002. What that novel did for the promotion of understanding of transgendered individuals will undoubtedly be mirrored by The Plutocracy Platforms effect on American politics in the 21st century. Farrar, Straus and Giroux is a general trade press in New York renowned for its international list of literary fiction, nonfiction, poetry and childrens books. The Plutocracy Platform will be available to the public starting November 6, 2012, to coincide with the presidential election of this year. We hope you will consider commenting on the manuscript, as your opinion is sure to influence American readers. Please feel free to contact us at any time with questions or comments by calling 212-741-6900. Best regards, Farrar, Straus and Giroux

Because Jeffrey Eugenides is a Pulitzer-winning author and the book deals with political themes, I thought former President Bill Clinton would be an excellent candidate to blurb The Plutocracy Platform. This is a cover letter requesting his review.

Research

Most of my work on Close Is Fine was in marketing. I was closely involved in obtaining blurbs, writing the marketing plan and various cover letters, facilitating the author interview that appears in the back of the book, setting up readings and a blog tour for Eliot, and planning the book launch at Portlands Doug Fir Lounge (thats the pretty invitation Krys Roth designed for me!).

Title: Close Is Fine Author(s): Eliot Treichel Contact info: holebubble@hotmail.com Book description Close is Fine is a collection of short stories primarily set in small-town Wisconsin. The collection is tied together by a strong sense of place and consistent themes that emphasize the way in which personal relationships are able to inspire self-reflection on an emotional, physical, and mental level. Though its set in rural Wisconsin, Close is Fine feels as if it could take place in any non-urban U.S. town. This quality allows the collection to resonate with anyone, regardless of residence, who has felt the inescapable pang of loneliness and realized the inherent value of being able to truly rely on oneself. In his debut collection, Treichels subtle but masterfully woven themes of family, fidelity, and friendship leave a tender ache in the heart of its readers. Category: Fiction, short stories (single author) Format: Trade paperback, e-book Illustrator: N/A Illustrations # (color/b&w): no interior images Trim size: Page count: Imprint: N/A Warehouse date: May 2012 Pub date: October 2012 ISBN13: 977-3-2010-73-1 List price: Print run: Book code book title abbreviation: CiF Edition: first Other books by author: n/a Competition Title: In The Bedroom Author: Andre Dubus Pub. Date: January 29, 2002 Publisher: Vintage ISBN: 9781400030774 Audience: Adult Page Count: 160 Price: $13.00 Amazon Ranking: #331,998 Synopsis: The seven stories collected hereincluding Killings, the basis for Todd Fields award-winning film In the Bedroomshowcase legendary writer Andre Dubuss sheer narrative mastery in a book of quietly stagger-

ing emotional power. A father in mourning contemplates the unthinkable as the only way to allay his grief. A boy must learn to care for his younger brother when their mother leaves the family. A young woman who has never lacked lovers despairs of ever finding love itself, and then makes an accidental discovery that brings her real joy. Culled from Dubuss treasured collections Selected Stories and Dancing After Hours, these beautiful stories of people at pivotal moments in their lives are some of the most bewitching and profound in American fiction. Similarities/Differences: Like Close is Fine, the protagonists in each story are linked through living in the same town/having a shared community and a shared history. The writing comes from a very place-based space and also employs a subtlety akin to Treichels style. In The Bedroom, however, takes place on the East Coast and usually involves upper middle class adults going through some sort of quiet emotional turmoil. Title: The Lone Surfer of Montana, Kansas: Stories Author: Davy Rothbart Pub. Date: 2005 Publisher: Simon and Schuster ISBN: 9780743263054 Audience: Adult Page count: 162 Trim size: 6.5 X 4.5 inches, paperback Price: $12.00 Amazon ranking: #725,443 Synopsis: Full of loneliness and hope, heartbreak and humor, Rothbarts tales blaze their way from Midwestern farm fields to state prisons and border-town brothels. Much like the lost, tossed, and forgotten items Rothbart collected n his acclaimed book, Found, the stories in The Lone Surfer of Montana, Kansas capture the oddity, poetry, and dignity of everyday life. Similarities/Differences: In both books the morality of the protagonists is open to interpretation, however it is quickly apparent that standard moral codes do not matter when deciding if each character in the stories is likeable or not. It becomes a non-issue. Choices, social status, and characters histories are not so much extrapolated upon with straight prose, but more so hinted at through dialog and what remains unsaid. Rothbarts collection uses much more street lingo, and appeals to a more hip, fast, and technology-inspired culture of readers than Close is Fine. Title: Twenty Grand, And Other Tales of Love and Money Author: Rebecca Curtis Pub. Date: 2007 Publisher: HarperCollins ISBN: 9780061173097 Audience: Adult, Women Page Count: 272 Trim Size: 6.6 x 4.7 x 2 inches, Paperback Price: $13.95 Amazon Ranking: #533,903 Synopsis: In this dazzling literary debut, Rebecca Curtis displays the gifts that make her one of the most talented writers of her generation. Her characters young women struggling to find happiness, love, success, security, and adventure - wait tables, run away from home, fall for married men, betray their friends, and find themselves betrayed as well. With elegant prose and a wicked sense of humor, these stories reveal Curtiss provocative and uncompromising view of life, one that makes her writing so poignant and irresistible. Similarities/Differences: Obviously, the theme of women struggling to find happinesssets it drastically apart from Close is Fine. The style of the prose is much more experimental than Treichels. The main similarity between the two books, and also a compelling way to write a short story collection in general, is that it centers around a specific region in America that becomes deeply rooted in each story as the collection moves forward. At the end of Curtis book, there is a special section in one edition that actually maps out all the places mentioned in the previous stories, complete with directions and Curtis own memories of going there, or of eating there, or of hiking on that particular mountain, etc. It creates a wonderful sense of belonging, even if the place itself is not one the reader is familiar with. Title: Death Is Not An Option Author: Suzanne Rivecca Pub. Date: 2010 Publisher: W.W. Norton & Company ISBN: 978-0393339901 Audience: Adult Page Count: 224

Trim Size: 7.1 x 4.9 x 1.5 inches, Hardcover Price: $14.95 Amazon Ranking: #347,457 Synopsis: The female protagonists in Riveccas debut collection have a lot in common, so much so that they at times feel like the same person, despite (slight) variations in context. They are a mostly Midwestern bunch, sassy, bookish, and Catholic (or lapsed Catholic), but its their ambivalent relationships to victimhood that provide the collection with its real material: some refuse to be pitied, while others dabble in self-victimization for selfish purposes. Many stories involve the tricky relationships between parents and their children as the children negotiate themselves into adulthood. Similarities/Differences: The difference lies in the writing styles of Treichel and Rivecca. Rivecca feels more immediate, of the moment (very 2010 as opposed to timeless) and it is obvious that the chaotic, chatty, fast-paced inner dialog comes from the brains of women. Otherwise, the two collections are a lot a like in that they are both strong, quite emotionally capable debut collections. The stories stand strong alone, yet weave together a larger narrative that gives it a novel-like feel. Even though the protagonists names are different, they can still be thought of as similar folks, navigating similar plights in life. Related topics to this book People and their place in life, emotionally and physically the boundaries we bump up against the fragility of our humanity our response in specific time and place Anytown,USA simultaneous isolation within a community -> despite deep connections, we can feel more isolated than eververy relevant to todays technological community measuring a character against their backdrop accepting your surroundings and living within their unchanging bounds Strongest selling feature(s) Genre/subject: Beautifully written short story collection that combines day-to-day type experiences with overarching themes of place and self. Author: A native of Wisconsin, Eliot now calls Oregon his home. He graduated from Bennington Colleges M.F.A. program and now teaches writing at Lane Community College. In addition, he has taught composition and has mentored Independent Studies in magazine journalism and adventure writing at Prescott College in Arizona. Eliot also works as a freelance writer, and is passionately committed to having a personal influence on his local literary community. Eliot Treichel has repeatedly demonstrated a passion for the education process and a devotion to small, independent presses. He has come to the table with quite an extensive awareness of Ooligans philosophy and our mission to impact the literary community in a sustainable way. His enthusiasm to work with us rather than with a larger press bodes well for the future of the presss relationship with the author and the ultimate success of this title. Treichels short stories have appeared in Beloit Fiction Journal, CutBank, Passages North, Southern Indiana Review and several other literary journals, including The Portland Review. His story Stargazer, one of the stories included in this collection, appeared as a Story of the Week in Narrative this June. In 2009, based on his story The Golden Torch, he received a full scholarship to the Tin House Writers Workshop. His story Good Potato Soil was nominated for the Best New American Voices anthology, and hes also been twice nominated for a Pushcart Prize. Treichels nonfiction writing, which often focuses on whitewater paddling or outdoor pursuits, has appeared in Canoe & Kayak, Paddler, Eugene Magazine, The Oregonian and other commercial periodicals. Tie-in with Holiday: Great winter holiday gift, especially since it will be released in the Fall 12. Arrange opportunities for Treichel to be a visiting writer at Lane Community College, Portland State, Bennington or other writing event (W2P?) to teach a writing workshop and promote CiF. Arrange readings at regional bookstores, both Portland and Eugene area. Arrange launch parties in Portland, Eugene, Wisconsin, and Vermont (where Treichel went to school). Have Portland be the parent location for the party and then get a big screen tv to Skype in the other locations. Have Treichel do a reading and then maybe find a way to connect with the other sites (have them tell a funny anecdote about Treichel or read favorite passages from the book, etc.). Coordinate a launch party at Backspace Caf in Portland. They would have the ability to handle the multisite Skype session and the space is great for mingling and arranging a reading. Maybe see if there is a local band that wants promotion in exchange for playing for free?

Dear _____________, How close is close enough? We are hoping you would like to find out. Ooligan Press is pleased to announce the release of our newest piece of literary fiction, Close is Fine set to hit stores in November, 2012 and we would like YOU to be a reviewer. We feel that with your unique perspective on storytelling and obvious passion for your craft, Close is Fine will resonate with your appreciation for excellent writing and engage you deeply, just like it did us. Close is Fine is the brainchild of first time author, Eliot Treichel, who we think is a genius at capturing place. It is a study of the snapshots that make up common life and the details that come into focus when you look just a bit closer. Emphasizing the frailty and fallibility of relationships, this beautiful collection provides a brief glimpse into the quirky and complex lives of the inhabitants of a small, rural Wisconsin town. Treichel draws us into a world where, with each characters struggle to define their individuality and reconcile their ideals with ordinary life, we are witness to their unique self-discoveries. At times mournful and haunting, this story collection celebrates the nobility of simple life, of striving and failing without ever losing hope. We would be glad to send you a hard copy or e-galley of the book so please let us know your preference. We also appreciate you taking time out of your busy schedule to focus some of your creative energy on reviewing our book. Thank you. Cheers,

7/1/13 9:16 PM

Dear Pacific Poetry Project: Alive at the Center poet, As you know, your poetry was chosen to be a part of Alive at the Center. Alive at the Center, the Pacific Poetry Projects inaugural collection, is an anthology of contemporary poetry from writers in Portland, Seattle, and Vancouver, B.C. highlighting the poetic atmosphere of each city. In order to promote this book as effectively as possible, we are giving all of the individual contributors the tools to self-market Alive at the Center to their friends, families, and communities. We hope that each poet will promote ATC in his or her own unique way, and further the books mission to celebrate the diversity of a plethora of gifted writers. We hope that all of the poets will find the resources included in the kit useful when promoting the book online and in their communities. In the kit please find a list of self-marketing tips for writers, samples of blurbs for ATC, instructions for creating a poetry video for the ATC book trailer (due by January 5, please!), a list of useful contacts, postcard and event poster designs, and logos for use in print or online. We ask that poets please keep in mind that we are a university press and as such would appreciate that any promotion of the book be respectful and uphold the reputation of Ooligan Press and its authors. We hope poets will find the Alive at the Center tipsheet especially helpful when choosing the right language to describe and characterize the book. In addition to the various marketing and promotional documents to be found within the kit, we have also included an order form so that poets can obtain as many copies of Alive at the Center as they need. Congratulations again on the selection of your work for inclusion in Alive at the Center, and for being one of the talented writers contributing to the rich literary culture of the Pacific Northwest region. Cheers! Sincerely, Jesse Snavlin and Tina Morgan Alive at the Center project managers

This is the self-marketing kit I put together for the poets of Alive at the Center. It included a tipsheet, marketing tips, blurbs, images and icons, and an order form.

Pacific Poetry Project: Tips for Self-Marketing

1. Create/update social media/blog with release dates, events, links to partial content, and more
Create and update your own Facebook page, Twitter account, website, Pinterest, blog, etc. promoting yourself and your writing, or contribute to Ooligan Press Facebook page and blog. This is a great way to build a following and keep your readers updated about the release date of Alive at the Center, reading events and the book launch party, and new writing by yourself or other PPP poets. You may contact Ooligans Social department for advice about your blog or social media accounts or to submit a post for Facebook or the Ooligan blog by writing to social@ooliganpress.pdx.edu.

2. Distribute event flyers to local area bookstores, coffee shops, art galleries, and other cultural businesses
Local businesses can offer great opportunities for promotion, especially since most are invested in the local cultural scene and local artists. Many have bulletin boards or other promotional spaces, as well as relationships with their regular customers, so there is great potential for word-of-mouth style publicity. Get to know the owners of your local businesses as a gateway to the wider public. Focus on businesses involved in the arts or literature first, then branch out. Get creative!

3. Contribute regularly to poetry/literature blogs and events websites in your area in order to build familiarity with your event
Much like building relationships with local businesses, you can also forge connections with internet organizations that have a local focus. Search for blogs and websites that keep an eye on local events and offer to contribute contentmost of these kinds of sites are run by a few or even one person, and depend on community participation for information. Dont forget about the blogs or event calendars of local publications, venues, clubs, etc., which can be a great way to get the word out about your events.

4. Contact local media with a press release mentioning the book /events
Dont be afraid to write your own press releases! Do a simple Google search for tips or templates to help you write a good press release; once youve written one youre happy with, use it to generate later versions specific to particular eventsjust substitute new information for old. Develop a master list of local media contacts (easily found by doing Google searches or even looking in the phone book) and send each new iteration of your press release to them.

89
PortfolioBook1.indb 89 7/1/13 9:16 PM

5. Have friends and colleagues write reviews on Amazon, their own blogs, etc.
Enlist the help of the people most likely to give ityour friends and family! Ask them to read your work and then review it for social reading sites or online book retailers. You can also reach out to other writers, whether you know them personally or not, and offer promotional trades. Write guest posts for other peoples blogs and offer them space on yours; ask people to post reviews of your work on Amazon or Goodreads; solicit reviews or blurbs that you can post to your social media accounts; see what other trades you can come up with!

6. Create and maintain an author website

Blogs and social media accounts are great for self-marketing, but nothing looks more professional (on the internet, anyway) than an actual website. Try to get your full name in the URL, and make sure to link your existing social media to your site. Also include links to internet bookstores or make your own shopping cart feature so people can buy your books. This way, readers can find all the information they need to know about you in one convenient place, and you have the opportunity to express yourself with your sites design and structure. Think of it as a fun personal project! For technical help you can contact Ooligans Digital Content department at digital@ooliganpress.pdx.edu.

7. Be aware of local events, such as book fairs and expos, that you can participate in
Stay up-to-date with whats going on in your community and/or with events or conventions near enough to you that youre able to travel to. These kinds of events can be great opportunities to network with other writers, readers, agents, publishers, etc. If a booth at a convention costs too much for you to manage yourself, team up with some fellow poets or other friends in the business and share the cost. If you attend an event, make sure you let people know about it beforehand and/or record your experience with pictures, video, blog posts, etc. that your followers can see afterward.

8. Learn to use social media to your advantage; take a look at other authors platforms to get ideas if youre stuck on what to do
Unfortunately, social media can be useless if its not done right. A blog that just takes up space on the internet and doesnt get updated regularly or a Facebook page with too much unflattering or obscene material, etc., can do you a disservice rather than marketing you effectively. For ideas about what works and what doesnt, visit the accounts of other writers or publishing houses and take a critical look at how their social media reflects on them. What do you like and what dont you like? What do their followers respond to, and what seems to fail at arousing reader interest? You can also do Google searches for tips and strategies.

90
PortfolioBook1.indb 90 7/1/13 9:16 PM

9. Comment and participate in discussions on other blogs to get your name out and build your credibility
Again, search out literary/author blogs and offer to guest-post or trade posts with the blogs owner. If youre having a hard time with that method, remember that you can always comment on blogs, either joining discussions and becoming, in a sense, a community member of that blog, or simply leaving a single comment with a remark about the post and a plug for your own website or book. And keep in mind that a blog owner who is not initially interested in hosting a guest post of yours might change their mind if they see you actively participating in discussions and contributing worthwhile information and opinions to their site.

10. Contact local libraries about readings or featuring the book

Libraries are a great, often unsung, resource for writers, especially writers who dont have a huge and dedicated following. Many libraries will allow you to host a program onsite that you can design yourself to suit your personal knowledge and interests. Many libraries host readings. Many host regular book clubs you can get in touch with who might be interested in reading your book(s). And you might get your book featured prominently on a new releases or local writers display, or talked up by the librarians to library patrons, if youre willing to go to the effort of getting to know the library employees.

Now that Alive at the Center is nearing publication, Ooligan Press needs promotional material from the people who know it best: the poets. We hope that you will be willing to provide a short blurb to be used as bonus material for the Ooligan website and social media platforms or in the book itself. We are looking particularly for blurbs about your city and what you love about itand it would be especially helpful if the blurb focused on the uniqueness of the poetry scene in your city, or why your city is important to the regional, national, or international poetry scene. Because of your creative contribution to the collection, we believe you are the ideal person to speak on this subject, and that readers will appreciate your appraisal. For examples of the praise Alive at the Center has already garnered, please see below. Thank you for your time. We hope to hear from you soon and look forward to receiving your input. Sincerely, Marketing team Ooligan Press Tart, sharp, unexpected, funny, sidelong, blunt, and gentle, with passages and lines of startling power and pleasure. Personally, I would buy this in a trice for the sheer quality, but consider, too, that your purchase helps jazz the art of storycatching and the community of storysharingand what could be cooler than that?" Brian Doyle, author of Mink River The Pacific Northwest is home for so many poets that metaphor isnt just a literary device but a way of life, yet often in the discussion of great literary cities in North America, Portland, Seattle, and Vancouver are rarely spoken of with the same adoration as New York, Boston, or even Los Angeles. The modesty and politeness of the Northwest certainly doesnt help. But Alive at the Center, a collection of the finest living poets working in the Pacific, eschews the quintessential Northwest politeness through poems that are clever, inventive, sexy, and rich with the spirit of a region that wont be forgotten the next time you talk about great literary cities. If Alive at the Center proves anything about Northwest poetry, its that we arent some ragtag group of poets in the upper left corner of a map we are, in fact, at the center. We are the home of the next generation contemporary North American poets. Read this book, and youll think so, too. Brian McGuigan, program director at Richard Hugo House

Up Nights: A Novel
Daniel Kine
SALES HOOK Up Nights follows the lives of four hapless youths living against the backdrop of post-9/11 America. With personal afflictions that reflect the social and cultural issues hindering modern America, their intertwining stories reveal the absence, fervor, and ingenuity of life on the outer edges of a disoriented society. DESCRIPTION Up Nights, Daniel Kines second book, is a classic road novel for a new generation. With direct, unrelenting prose, Kine tells the story of Arthur, a modern young American male making a living by taking advantage of happenstance. Arthur struggles to navigate his transitory existence alongside a childhood friend, Francis, their one-time mentor, Bill, and Bills on-again-off-again girlfriend, Vita. The four of them seek experiences that make them feel alive, looking for something to counter their ever-growing sense of futility and desperation. Francis searches for truth about his childhood, Bill and Vita briefly recover their lost love, and Arthur forms a fleeting connection with Rosalie, a stranger he meets in New Orleans. Through empty relationships, addictions, and brushes with the law, these individuals reach out to each other and to the lost and damaged people they encounter along the way. KEY SELLING POINTS The Portland setting makes this book appeal to the drifting subculture that has claimed Portland as a central hub. Portland is also currently a popular subject in mainstream culture, as in IFCs Portlandia. Offering an alternative to traditional happy-ending stories, Up Nights is populated exclusively by anti-heroes. There is a potential implicit link between this title and the Occupy movement, with the suggestion that Arthur and his companions belong to the disenfranchised ninety-nine percent. Without being overtly political, the momentum generated by Occupy could be used to appeal to the same section of the population. The far-flung settings in the book (Portland, New Orleans, Miami, Mexico, and Cuba) offer marketable road story, potential, with appeal to adventurous youth. AUDIENCE Fans of alternative lifestyle novels and other misspent youth stories. Young people (18-35) who identify with feeling lost and cynical like Arthur and his friends. Readers who feel they belong to the 99% or are invested in the Occupy Wall Street movement. Young men, especially those who are rebellious or restless. Older people who can identify with the hopelessness of being perpetually on the road; trapped in unemployment and/or addiction; seemingly drifting through life. Fans of the Beat movement and of road novels. AUTHOR BIO Daniel Kine is the author of Between Nowhere and Happiness (2009, Smallhand Press) and Up Nights (2013, Ooligan Press). Dear _____, My name is ______ and I am with the Marketing department at Ooligan Press. We are excited to announce that we will be publishing Up Nights, by Daniel Kine, in the spring of 2013. The authors second novel is a portrait of post-9/11 disaffected youth, who stumble through empty relationships, drug addictions, and brushes with the law, but still reach out to each other and to the various lost and broken people they encounter along the way. We are hoping you would be willing to receive an electronic copy of the manuscript and provide a short blurb that may be included on the back cover of the book. If you would like to see the manuscript and assist us by providing a blurb, please let us know at your earliest convenience and we will send you an electronic version for your review. Thank you for your time. We hope to hear from you soon and look forward to receiving your thoughts on the book. Sincerely,

Again, most of my work on the novel Up Nights was in marketing. I spent a lot of time in the Marketing group, half of it as department manager.

Dear _____, Ooligan Press is excited to announce its newest release, Up Nights, a work of literary fiction by Daniel Kine. We are contacting you for a blog tour we are putting together for Kines new novel. Your blog, [Insert Name of Blog], would be a perfect stop on our tour. [Insert reasons why we chose their blog in particular to make the letter a little more unique and personal.] Your participation in this tour would be an excellent way for your blog to gain more exposure, because we will be posting a link to your blog post on Ooligans blog (http://ooligan.pdx.edu/weblog/), Facebook and Twitter pages, as well as Kines own website (https://sites.google.com/site/danielbkine/home). The blog post itself will be about either Kines process of writing, or his experience of having Up Nights published. If need be, Daniel is also open to working with you to come up with a topic more appropriate for your audience. Up Nights, Daniel Kines second book, is a classic road novel for a new generation. In raw, unrelenting prose, Kine tells the story of the complexities of human relationships when four friends embark on an existential journey through the underbelly of society. As they drift from city to city, they each struggle to connect with the disenchanted people they encounter along the way. Up Nights speaks to the reality of the human condition and the unequivocal impermanence of life. Daniel Kine is also the author of the novel Between Nowhere and Happiness (2009, Smallhand Press). He was born in Toledo, Ohio, in 1984, and studied philosophy and literature in San Francisco, Mexico City, Guatemala, and Portland, Oregon. His writing has appeared in several publications, including Modern Review, Q Poetry, Pathways, and Indie Literature Now. His fiction has been described as concerning the rootlessness of modern youth. Common themes in his novels revolve around suicide, drug use, and the struggles of individual freedom. He now lives in London, England. Ooligan Press is a general trade press at Portland State University. In addition to publishing books that honor cultural and natural diversity, particularly in the Pacific Northwest, Ooligan is dedicated to teaching the art and craft of publishing. Under the direction of professional faculty and staff, students combine theory with practice in order to publish profitable books in real markets. If you are interested and would like to discuss the tour in further detail, or if you have any questions about Up Nights or Ooligan Press, please email us at marketing@ooliganpress.pdx.edu. We would also be happy to provide you with a digital review copy of Up Nights if you would like to read the novel before making your decision. Thank you for your consideration, and we look forward to collaborating with you. Sincerely, Ooligan Press PO Box 751 Portland, OR 97207 Phone: 503-725-9748 www.ooliganpress.pdx.edu

The Wax Bullet War

Sean Davis SALES HOOK This is a story for the mothers, fathers, family, and friends of war veterans. This is a collection of one soldiers memories, for those of us who support the troops but not necessarily the war or the reasons behind it; for those of us who have no idea what soldiers actually go through on a daily basis in Iraq; for those of us who have loved ones who have gone through it. Its a beautiful, harrowing, powerful ride through the reality of veteran life in the 21st century. DESCRIPTION In the first 155 days of 2012, there were 154 suicides among U.S. military troops. What is post-traumatic stress disorder? How does a society help those who return from war with completely different personalities? Follow Sean Davis life as he discovers the oddities of a pop-up America in a hostile desert wasteland; loses his best friend in a violent ambush; returns, critically wounded, to confinement in a place thats not his home; and deals with the fallout of PTSD and the horror of what he experienced in that war zone. Davis transcends politics without ignoring them to bring to light a story of the effects of war on a single soldier. Its not a manual for fixing the military, foreign policy, or the ravaging effects of PTSD; rather, its a guidebook that nudges us along, points out the details, and tells us about things we never knew existed. KEY SELLING POINTS This will be the first Iraq War memoir to address the topic of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in depth; will resonate with vets who suffer from PTSD as well as friends and family members coping with the issue Lack of a political agenda in the book means that readers of any political affiliation will be able to enjoy and learn from the material The everyman personality of the author combined with his strong writing and storytelling skills make the book identifiable to the average reader; the narrative is inviting and the main character empathetic AUDIENCE Adult male military supporters, ages 18-70. Current or veteran military members and their families. Members of any political party active in politics and political discussion. War protestors, male and female, ages 18-70, especially those supportive of American troops. AUTHOR BIO Not only is Sean Davis a veteran of the Iraq war who spent sixteen years in the military, he is a gifted writer with an interesting story. He attended art school before earning his bachelors degree in English from Portland State University and an MFA in Writing from Pacific University. He published the novel Motivation and Toleration under the name Ian Avi and has contributed to numerous publications including the Portland Mercury, Work Magazine, and The Good Men Project. He has also appeared on 60 Minutes and is cofounder of Hubris Press in Portland.

National Endowment for the Arts grant application

Programmatic Activities Ooligan Press constantly seeks to contribute worthwhile works to the literary community. While our focus is on representing regional and marginalized voices, we enjoy the flexibility to publish works of all kinds, from educational nonfiction to emerging fiction voices to young adult literature to poetry. Listed below are some of our finest books, but we have many other gems in our backlist that predate 2010. In addition to publishing books, Ooligan works within the regional literary community. We host a yearly publishing conference for writers called Write to Publish, which seeks to demystify the publishing industry for writers, and participate in Wordstock, the major annual Portland literary event. 2012 Alive at the Center Due for publication this April, Alive at the Center is the first installment in our Pacific Poetry Project series featuring outstanding Pacific Northwest poetry. The anthology will feature poets from three major regional cities: Portland, Seattle, and Vancouver, B.C. This anthology, compiled and edited by a team of outstanding poets from each city, is a cultural conversation among the unique urban communities whose perspectives share more than just a common landscape. Alive at the Center is also available in three smaller city-specific volumes, which contain only the poetry selections from that city. Each city-specific volume has been designed with its own unique cover, making these books worthy of collecting along with the main anthology. In a three-week period in April, launch parties for the collection will be held in each city featured in the anthology, in association with local poetry associations and their members. Close Is Fine Published in November 2012, Close Is Fine is the debut short story collection of regional author Eliot Treichel. Rural Wisconsinthe lonely, aching expanse of quiet isolationdoubles as a metaphor for the characters who yearn for a closeness in personal relationships that is just out of grasp. High school soccer teams, bear cubs, dog sleddingall are masterfully woven together in a landscape that becomes a character in itself. Treichel expertly captures the voice of theindividual, allowing any individual, anywhere, who has felt the inescapable pangs of loneliness, to connect to his characters aching hearts and quiet plights. Sales: 477 For the books release, Ooligan hosted a launch party at Portlands Doug Fir Lounge, with an attendance of about fifty people. Eliot continues to support the book through readings around Oregon, many of which Ooligan organized, including events at Powells Books, the Eugene Public Library, and St. Johns Booksellers. He was awarded a Career Opportunity Grant for $1250 from the Oregon Arts Commission to help support his promotion of the book. Write to Publish 2012 The 2012 edition of the Write to Publish conference focused on genre writing, with the goal of demystifying the publishing industry for aspiring writers. Notable authors in attendance included Phillip Margolin, Chelsea Cain, Lilith St. Crow, Lisa Hendrix, Jay Lake, and William F. Nolan; the conference featured author presentations, discussion panels, and workshops. Held on the Portland State University campus, attendance topped previous incarnations of the conference and enjoyed great success among its visitors. Sales: 47 Blue Thread Published in February 2012, the historical young adult novel Blue Thread, by Ruth Tenzer Feldman, was recently named a finalist for the Oregon Book Award for Young Adult Literature. In 1912, sixteen-year-old Miriam Josefsohn is groomed for the life of a socialite, but dreams of working in the family print shop. When her father refuses to train her as his replacement, Miriam decides to take control of her life and devotes herself to womens suffrage at the height of the Oregon campaign. A fantastical voyage through time and an introduction to the Daughters of Zelophehad lead Miriam to fight for womens rights in two very different eras. Sales: 977 For the books release, Ooligan hosted a launch party at the Oregon Historical Society. Ruth continues to promote the book, teach young adults about history and Jewish culture, and participate in literary events. Notable appearances include the Petticoat Postcards event at the Portland Central Library, the Book Fan Friday event at Powells Books, the Heirlooms and Hineni program at the Oregon Jewish Museum, the student-focused Oregon Writing Festival, Write to Publish, and the upcoming Blue Thread: Connections at Congregation Havurah Shalom in Portland.

The Yellow Wallpaper

It Is very seldom that mere ordinary people like John and myself secure ancestral halls for the summer. A colonial mansion, a hereditary estate, I would say a haunted house and reach the height of romantic felicity, but that would be asking too much of fate! Still, I will proudly declare that there is something queer about it. Else, why should it be let so cheaply? And why have stood so long untenanted? John laughs at me, of course, but one expects that in marriage. John is practical in the extreme. He has no patience with faith, an intense horror of superstition, and he scoffs openly at any talk of things not to be felt and seen and put down in figures. John is a physician, and perhapsI would not say it to a living soul, of course, but this is dead paper and a great relief to my mindperhaps that is one reason I do not get well faster. You see, he does not believe I am sick!

And what can one do? If a physician of high standing, and ones own husband, assures friends and relatives that there is really nothing the matter with one but temporary nervous depressiona slight hysterical tendencywhat is one to do? My brother is also a physician, and also of high standing, and he says the same thing. So I take phosphates or phosphiteswhichever it is, and tonics, and journeys, and air, and exercise, and am absolutely forbidden to work until I am well again. Personally, I disagree with their ideas. Personally, I believe that congenial work, with excitement and change, would do me good. But what is one to do? I did write for a while in spite of them, but it does exhaust me a good dealhaving to be so sly about it, or else meet with heavy opposition. I sometimes fancy that in my condition if I had less opposition and more society and stimulusbut John says the very worst thing I can do is to think about my condition, and I confess it always makes me feel bad. So I will let it alone and talk about the house. The most beautiful place! It is quite alone, standing well back from the road, quite three miles from the village. It makes me think of English places that you read about, for there are hedges and walls and gates that lock, and lots of separate little houses for the gardeners and people. There is a delicious garden! I never saw such a garden large and shady, full of box-bordered paths, and lined with long grape-covered arbors with seats under them. There were greenhouses too, but they are all broken now. There was some legal trouble, I believe, something about the heirs and co-heirs; anyhow, the place has been empty for years. That spoils my ghostliness, I am afraid, but I dont carethere is something strange about the houseI can feel it. I even said so to John one moonlit evening, but he said what I felt was a draft, and shut the window. 6

about it. They regard such children as property, as marketable as the pigs on the plantation, and it is seldom that they do not make them aware of this by passing them into the slave traders hands as soon as possible and thus getting them out of their sight. I am glad to say there are some honorable exceptions. I have myself known two southern wives who exhorted their husbands to free those slaves toward whom they stood in a parental relation, and their request was granted. These husbands blushed before the superior nobleness of their wives natures. Though they had only counseled them to do that which it was their duty to do, it commanded their respect and rendered their conduct more exemplary. Concealment was at an end, and confidence took the place of distrust. Though this bad institution deadens the moral sense, even in white women, to a fearful extent, it is not altogether extinct. I have heard southern ladies say of Mr. Such-a-one, he not only thinks it no disgrace to be the father of those little niggers, but he is not ashamed to call himself their master. I declare, such things ought not to be tolerated in any decent society!

7. The Lover
why does the slave ever

love? Why allow the tendrils of the heart to twine around objects that may at any moment be wrenched away by the hand of violence? When separations come by the hand of death, the pious soul can bow in resignation and say, not my will, but thine be done, O Lord! But when the ruthless hand of man strikes the blow, regardless of the misery he causes, it is hard to be submissive. I did not reason thus when I was a young girl. Youth will be youth. I loved, and I indulged the hope that the dark clouds around me would turn out a bright lining. I forgot that in the land of my birth the shadows are too dense for light to penetrate. A land where laughter is not mirth, nor thought the mind, nor words a language, nor even men mankind. Where cries reply to curses, shrieks to blows, and each is tortured in his separate hell.

Art Deco book design is difficult to pin down, as it incorporated elements of various schools of design that overlapped in the early twentieth century. It owed its decorative, luxurious sensibilities to the Art Nouveau period that preceded it, but it also gave a nod to the clean, crisp style of modernism that flowered in the 1930s. Art Deco embodied the adventurous spirit of the "Roaring '20s," a period

remembered for its flappers, its back-alley speakeasies, its abundance of expendable income, and its gorgeous embellishments, from the cascading beads of a womans party frock to the saturated colors and bold designs of all manner of art objectsincluding books. What follows is just a sampling of the beautiful creations, and some of their creators, from a well-loved and much-echoed era.

Linotype and Monotype

"In America, a fast-paced modernity took a particularly strong hold not just on the world of packaging and products, or on decorative objects and furnishings, but on advertisements, matchbook graphics, magazine covers, and book-jacket design," (Heide, Gilman 132). "New color lithography processes, inks, and paper production methods improved the technical quality of [published] books," (Heide, Gilman 136). The Industrial Revolution ushered in some new developments in printing technology: An automatic punch-cutter invented in 1885 meant type could be cast quickly and easily, making type design less of a fine craft and more of an automated process. In 1886 Ottmar Mergenthalers Linotype machine was introduced, which combined the keyboard unit, matrix magazine, and caster as one. The Monotype followed in 1887, patented by Tolbert Lanston. This machine kept the keyboard and caster separate, so that instead of slugs, or lines of type, it instead cast each character on an individual piece of metal. Both made book production a speedier, more automated process.

Rose Adler
An exhibition, held in Paris, showcasing international examples of the best in modern decorative and industrial arts. The exhibition featured sections for graphic design, book arts, and commercial art, further divided into subcategories. It was the event that launched Art Deco to the forefront of the worlds consciousness. A founding member of the Society of Original Book Binding, she produced fine books collected by patrons who appreciated her experimental use of colors and materials. "She constructed and organized a book's decor with architectural logic and rigor while simultaneously endowing her designs with a sensitivity and grace never spoiled by sentimentality. If her inexhaustible imagination inspired her to employ the most varied materials, including all leathers, suede, parchment, cork, amphibian skins, wood, ivory, etc...her creative imagination remained dominated by her gift as a colorist," (Huybrecht's Gallery).

Pierre Legrain
A diversely gifted artist, Legrain designed interiors as well as books. He shared a patron with Rose Adler, the French tastemaker Jacques Doucet. "Pierre Legrain's decors are almost always abstract and linear, with the letters of his book titles often serving as the ornamental motif. But notwithstanding their appearance of freedom, his compositions are conceived with an architectural rigor. Abandoning the customary browns, reds and greens that prevailed in bookbinding, Legrain employed leather as well as unexpected materials with unusual, light tones whose delicate, refined harmonies complemented the purity of his rhythms," (Huybrecht's Gallery).

Jacques Nathan Garamond

A founder of the Alliance Graphique Internationale, he was a painter and illustrator, and designed posters, trademarks, and packaging in addition to books. The Garamond in his name was actually a World War II addition, to hide his family name (Nathan) and safeguard against trouble with Nazi occupiers. His 1949 "Human Rights" poster for Unesco is considered his masterpiece.

Jan Tschichold (Universal alphabet, 192629)

A sans-serif typeface combining lowercase and uppercase letterforms in an attempt to create a universal, single-case alphabet. This was also attempted by designers like A.M. Cassandre, Bradbury Thompson, and Herbert Bayer. Promoted the "Constructivist" theory.

Edward Johnston (Railway, 1916)

Monotone sans-serif typeface created for the London Underground. Used in signage and advertisements for the underground system. Johnston was also type designer Eric Gill's teacher.

Paul Renner, Futura, 1926

Paul Renner (Futura, 1926)

Produced by the Bauer Foundry in Frankfurt, Futura is a modular sans serif because several letterforms share an element, like the lowercase o that is also used in the letters a, b, d, e, p, and q. This design was a more legible and practical version of the modular principle experimented with by previous typographers.

"A high-contrast, modified sans serif letterform with a distinctive thick body, which has been considered the archetypal Art Deco typeface," (Aynsley).

Rudolph Koch (Kabel, 1927)

A modular sans serif, competition for Futura. Designed for the Klingspor Foundry. Koch preserved more Roman features of type design than did Renner, like letter a and the slanted crossbar in the letter e.

Rudolph Koch, Kabel, 1927

William A. Dwiggins (Metro, 1929)

The first American version of the sans serif designs by Renner and Koch. The typeface was designed for the Linotype machine. Dwiggins also created the typographic house style for Knopf, and designed the famous Caledonia typeface.

Lucian Bernhard (Fashion, 1930)

Primarily an artist working in poster design and magazine art directing, the several roman typefaces he designed were distinguished by their long extenders. He also helped found the Contempora Studio with artists like Rockwell Kent and Paul Poiret.

Edward McKnight Kauffer (Victor Gollancz, Faber & Faber)

He started his career designing posters for the London Underground, then was commissioned by publisher Victor Gollancz to design book jackets. His designs were composed of relatively abstract shapes typically in two colors, which aligned with Gollancz's aesthetic as well as his budget. He also designed for Faber & Faber, who employed a wider variety of designs by various designers, so while a house style is not as recognizable, Kauffer's general style is still apparent.

John and Ruth Vassos W.A. Dwiggins (Knopf)

Studied under Frederic Goudy at the Frank Holme School of Illustration and is credited with being the first to use the term "graphic designer." He started designing book covers for Alfred Knopf in the early 1920s, accruing more than four hundred over a long period. He also designed for The Limited Editions Club, for which he created his most celebrated cover, for H.G. Wells's The Time Machine. A husband-and-wife team who collaborated on several books, including Ultimo and Contempo, both illustrated science fiction novels. John Vassos was an industrial artist whose work in the Art Deco period was very machine-influencedabstract, geometric, and hard.

Kent's cover design revitalized Moby Dick's popularity; Modern Library, 1930.

Cover and plates from Phobia, co-created and self-published collaboratively by John and Ruth Vassos (though only his name appears on the cover), 1931. John did the illustrations.

Rockwell Kent
According to the Philadelphia Museum of Art: "His bold and enigmatic images of mysterious, statuesque figures in spiritual communion with the natural world proved equally effective in corporate advertising campaigns and book projects alike." He designed for publishers including Random House, Doubleday, Harcourt, and Garden City Books.

John 1 6 Held, Jr.

The "Illustrator of the Jazz Age," as one of his biographies title proclaims, Held was a prolific illustrator for books and magazines who really embodied the 1920s flapper style. His name is synonymous with the "Roaring '20s" and the trends of the age. He designed book covers for books by F. Scott Fitzgerald and for issues of Vanity Fair, Life and other magazines. Much of his later work, like his woodcuts, were featured in The New Yorker.

Bookbinders in the Art Deco period experimented with new and exotic materials. They created beautiful custom books for patrons and collectors with materials like unusual leathers (crocodile, sharkskin, and snakeskin), metals such as platinum, aluminum, and steel, and fashioned inlays from rare woods, mother-of-pearl, or lacquer. The emphasis was on abstract and geometric shapes and patterns in lush, decadent colors.

This booklet was designed by Emily Gravlin in a variety of Art Deco typefaces. The body text is set in Futura, designed by Paul Renner in 1926, in eight-point size with ten-point leading. It was chosen for the round, inviting feel of the letterforms. The title and headers are set in Broadway, M.F. Benton's "archetypal" 1929 typeface. The section headings are set in Lucian Bernhard's 1930 design, Fashion, at eighteen-point size with twenty-point leading, to give the delicate flourishes of the typeface space to bloom. The subheadings are set in Kabel, by Rudolph Koch, 1927, at twelvepoint size with fourteen-point leading, to solidly anchor new topics in the text. The design and layout choices made for this paper are intended to celebrate the beauty and sophistication of 1920s art; I know I have fallen short, but it is only because my skill does not match my adoration for this very special era in book history.

This portfolio was designed by Emily Gravlin. The body text is set in Century Gothic, a geometric sans-serif designed in 1991, in ten-point size with twelve-point leading. It was chosen for its modern but relaxed look. The titles and headers are set in Monoglyceride, a free, modern digital typeface acquired from Urban Fonts. It represents modernity and a contemporary style that I admire. The small headers are in twenty-point size with twenty-two-point leading. The title is 120 points with 122-point leading. The design employs various wood-grain-patterned elements to echo the colors of the Pacific Northwest as well as the material books are made of in a timeless and modern way.
