Culminating: April 30, 2013 Unit C: Chemical Reactions Lesson 5.

1: Properties and Changes Goal: Identify evidence of a chemical change.

Lesson 5.6: Names and Formulas of Ionic Compounds Goal: Name ionic compounds. made up of a metal and a non-metal the name of the metal ion remains the same, the name of the non-metal ion changes to have the ending -ide names of ionic compounds involving multivalent metals should include roman numerals

Goal: Write the formulas for ionic compounds Write the chemical symbols of the elements beside one another. Write the charges of each element as superscripts. Cross-over the charges, and write them as subscripts. Reduce to lowest terms.

Lesson 5.9: Polyatomic Ions Polyatomic Ion: an ion made up of more than one atom that acts as a single particle Goal: Name polyatomic ions. Write the name of the metal. Write the name of the compound. Goal: Write the formulas for polyatomic ions. Follow the same procedure as writing the formulas for ionic compounds. Consider the polyatomic ion as a single unit when writing the chemical formulas for a compounds that includes a polyatomic ion. If the compound contains more than one of the polyatomic ion, write curved brackets around the ion and write a subscript outside the brackets. Lesson 5.10: Molecules and Covalent Bonding Molecular Compound: a pure substance formed from two or more nonmetals Goal: Name molecular compounds. If there is only one of the first molecule, write its name.

If there are more than one of the first molecule, use a prefix. For the second molecule, use a prefix and change the ending to -ide.

Goal: Write the formulas for molecular compounds. Write the name of each molecule. Apply appropriate subscripts by identifying prefixes. Lesson 6.1: Describing Chemical Reactions Goal: Define and write word equations. Word Equation: a way of describing a chemical reaction using the names of the reactants and products reactants are written on the left, products are written on the right of the arrow Goal: Define and write chemical equations. Word Equation: a way of describing a chemical reaction using the chemical formulas of the reactants and products reactants are written on the left, products are written on the right of the arrow Lesson 6.3: Conserving Mass in Chemical Reactions Goal: Define and understand law of conservation of mass.

Law of Conservation of Mass: the statement that, in any given chemical reaction, the total mass of the reactants equals the total mass of the products matter cannot be created or destroyed during chemical reactions, only rearranged

Lesson 6.4: Information in Chemical Equations Goal: Balance chemical equations. Coefficients can be added before chemical formulas in a chemical equation to make the numbers of atoms in reactants and products balance. Lesson 6.5: Types of Chemical Reactions: Synthesis and Decomposition Goal: Define and identify a synthesis reaction. Synthesis Reaction: a reaction in which two reactants combine to make a larger or more complex product; general pattern: A + B -> AB

Goal: Define and identify a decomposition reaction. Decomposition Reaction: a reaction in which a large or more complex molecule breaks down to form two (or more) simple products; general pattern: AB -> A + B
