Capabilities

Regional delivery HBO+EMTB conducts business from offices in 13 countries. HBO+EMTB is not a franchise our management structure and IT infrastructure allows us to operate as a unified practice, seamlessly servicing a regional client base. Expertise in particular industry sectors, client types or delivery methods exists across our network of offices. When commissions arise in specific geographical locations, these specialists provide conceptual expertise, supported by local offices for statutory compliance, management and production resources. Our account management and methodology provides consistency, quality and commensurate response to requirements wherever they arise in Asia Pacific, irrespective of scale. Clients benefit from harnessing the diverse resources of a multidisciplinary, regional practice.

Building Information Modelling HBO+EMTB is using the next generation of 3D Computer Aided Design (CAD) software. Our architectural projects are designed with Revit, a Building Information Modelling (BIM) software. BIM Software such as Revit allow a design to be drawn in three dimensions from day one of the design which creates a virtual building. The visualisation of an evolving design means alternatives are canvassed for quicker decision making. The entire design process becomes more efficient. With the aid of these 3D virtual buildings, a wider set of internal stakeholders such as staff, executives and management have the opportunity to engage at an earlier time than would have been possible in the past. All designers whether they are architects, interior designers or engineers work from the one BIM / Revit model. BIM enables our designers to more efficiently integrate our designs with other building services inputs and identify points of conflict between construction elements as they arise. This ability to prevent conflicts is a real benefit especially for technically complex projects

Sustainability HBO+EMTBs commitment to sustainability is not a response to current trends we have practised responsible design for decades. As designers, we have primary responsibility for shaping sustainable built environments. As a practice, we are aware of the importance of taking a green approach regardless of scale or budget. We collaborate with clients and consultant teams to integrate sustainable design without compromising budgetary constraints. Whole life cycle costing, embodied energy costs, and product and systems flexibility are analysed in the context of projected operating costs, potential gains in productivity, payback periods, and energy ratings tools. HBO+EMTB is an active member of the Green Building Councils of both Australia and New Zealand and over 25 employees have qualified as Green Star Accredited Professionals. In addition, we are familiar with similar local schemes in markets in which we operate such as BCA Green Mark, HK-BEAM, LEED and BREAAM. This commitment to research, education and staff development ensures the latest ESD developments shape our thinking.

BIM is particularly valuable for We offer expertise in commercially environmentally sustainable design. viable green initiatives across all our BIM is able to add a further dimension design disciplines. We are experienced to a design: time. The result is the in the delivery of environmentally ability to model the performance of an responsible outcomes for a breadth of architectural design over time. typologies, from corporate fitouts to masterplanned urban communities. The result is a powerful driver towards fully integrated sustainable design. Building and fitout performance can be adjusted for most efficient energy, lighting and spatial use. Fish Restaurant, Auckland Following a number of successful commissions for the Hilton Hotel, HBO+EMTBs Auckland studio recently provided interior design services for the fitout of Fish Restaurant. A partnership between Hilton Auckland and the Nourish Group, the restaurant is located on the first floor of the Hilton with one of the best outlooks on the Waitemata Harbour. The design intent was to create a dining experience which combines the unique local culture with the distinct style of an international hotel. The detailing and choice of materials has taken cues from the restaurants local and sustainable philosophy. The lighting was hand-blown by Wanganui glass artist Katie Brown and references the glass buoys formerly used in the Harbour. An outdoor eco-friendly fireplace was specified for its sustainable and aesthetic qualities and at night frames a view of the harbour through its warm glow. Making the most of the restaurants elevated waterfront position, the design places the stunning harbour views as the focal point. Timber slatted ceilings in the formal dining area add warmth, natural tones and materiality to the restaurant. They also frame the views of the harbour and create a visual connection between the indoor and outdoor wharf space. The introduction of the timber flooring in the outdoor dining area was an intentional nod to the typical New Zealand backyard deck and our tradition of eating outdoors.

Jervois Steakhouse, Queenstown New Zealand The client wanted a Jervois Steakhouse (JSH), a well recognised restaurant within Auckland, to be designed for Queenstown that not only connected to and stayed true to the brand but also transformed into a restaurant that Queenstown patrons would relish. HBO+EMTB was engaged to provide architectural and interior design services for the design and fitout of a new 133 seat restaurant and bar in an existing Sofitel hotel, Queenstown. The new steakhouse was designed to be part of a hotel building and also engages directly with the street, meaning it is perceived differently from an in-house hotel restaurant. JSH is a warm, inviting space with three open fireplaces and a landscape of different seating both inside and out. The main entry is through the bar which is semi industrial with old bricks lining the walls and up a spiral steel staircase to the busy restaurant. Custom light fittings and blackened floors are features of the interior. The restaurant layout and design responds to the seasonal nature of Queenstowns tourist based economy. The general footprint of the restaurant can effectively house full capacity, but doesnt feel empty when there are fewer diners within the restaurant during slower periods or off peak season.

The Rare Jewel, Sultanate of Oman HBO+EMTB designed a concept for The Rare Jewel, a striking, cutting edge mixed use development in the Sultanate of Oman. The design chisels the ancient rock and stone that is the bedrock of the local architecture into a sophisticated monolithic form destined to achieve an iconic status. Harmonious yet assertive, this strategically sited building was designed to enclose within its variegated outer shell an interior that rejuvenates, energises and inspires the distinguished patrons of its key offerings. From the premier family country club, a stunning five star hotel, luxurious apartments and high end retail outlets, an intuitively intelligent design maximises the surrounding natural resources while protecting from their harsher extremities. The Rare Jewel is an iconic design with unique architectural features that exude a sense of Western dynamism and Middle Eastern charm.

Top Caves Beachside, NSW

Caves Beachside, New South Wales HBO+EMTB provided architectural and interior design services for this resort community located at Caves Beach on the north coast of New South Wales. The design approach embraces a strong environmental response to sustainability, landscape and built form. The masterplan incorporates a variety of one and two storey weekenders, apartments, urban centre, recreational facilities and hotel. The historic caves are part of the water-worn sandstone enclosing headlands give a strong visual and historic connection to the area. Occupation of the site has left its mark however with a careful and sensitive response, the design will be a model for coastal development allowing access to quality facilities that will enhance the coastal/beach experience in a sustainable solution. In addition to regenerating the reserve to east and south, lagoon and revegetation to the north, the development increases overall housing choice, revitalise existing local centre and significantly improves public domain and commercial amenity. The site is unique, demanding a design solution that will become a model for this form of project Xanadu International Ecological Vacation Village, Zhangbei, Hebei Province China HBO+EMTB completed design and documentation of the Xanadu Ecological Resort and Hotel in Heibei Province, China. This 2,000 hectare vacation destination includes; nine villages, family farming plots, a Wellness Centre, an Equestrian Centre, an Equestrian Rare Breeds Zoo, a Bird Watching Centre, and an Ice Skating Centre. Located on a prominent hilltop beside a lake, the site has sweeping views of the surrounding Bashang Grasslands. It is a setting which required a rigorous design solution to ameliorate environmental factors such as strong winds and icy temperatures which make it a harsh landscape in which to spend time outdoors. HBO+EMTBs design creates spaces in the landscape offering shelter from the prevailing winds in the form of windbreaks and tree shelterbelts. The design also reinforces the grassland setting by introducing back to the area the full complement of native grasses, forbs and herbland plants that exists in the Bashang, creating a grassland that is animated by the wind, and changes in colour and texture with the seasons. Local flora is grown, harvested and processed for cosmetic use within the resorts spas, providing an industry and income for local farmers.

Sustainability

Healthy environments follow from sound environmental design and are vital to occupant comfort and satisfaction. At HBO+EMTB, we recognise the importance of integrating sustainable design principles into the built environment for these very reasons. In the work environment, improved staff comfort may also result in productivity gains, higher staff satisfaction levels and increased staff productivity whilst demonstrable pay back periods for many ESD initiatives further underscore the increasing commercial viability of a green approach. From the onset of the design process, we collaborate with our clients and consultants to identify areas where sustainability can be adopted within the design without compromising budgetary constraints. HBO+EMTB has LEED and Green Star Accredited Professionals [Green Building Council of Australia] on staff in each of our design disciplines. Across the HBO+EMTB group, staff are encouraged to stay abreast of ESD issues through attendance at relevant seminars or information sessions and regular review of articles related to ESD circulated by our Librarian. On the following page we have outlined some sustainability principles and ideas that may be integrated into BofAMLs new premises. Sustainability iniatives Management __ Working to LEED & Green Star standards __ Contractors holding Environmental Management system certification (EMS) as part of assessments against ISO14000 Series standard __ Eco specified suppliers __ Specific Waste Management Plan in place for contractors to implement Resource Reservation __ Water Efficiency fixtures and fittings ( 3 6 WEL Stars rated) __ Low maintenance building products __ Employ Disassembly reusable products (prefabricated modular components / off site constructions) __ Use Recycled content / Recyclable materials, or material easy to recycleeco specified suppliers __ Use Certified organic / renewable products, certified sustainable timber (FSC certified timber) __ Re-use materials from existing constructions on site or from reclaimed materials off site (eco specified suppliers) __ Designate space for recycling storage

ISO14001 Environmental Management System Accreditation

Our commitment to the environment is not merely a response to current trends HBO+EMTB have practised environmentally responsible design for decades. We have an Environmental Policy and specific Environmental Objectives and Targets which relate to how we operate and these have been approved by our Directors. We have an active Environmental Committee within the organisation with representatives across all aspects of the Group. Our key current goal is to obtain certification under ISO 14001. The first step in that process is an external review of our systems which is scheduled for mid 2010 We are confident that we have systems in place which will grant us this accreditation and will continue to expand our environmental consciousness and positive actions throughout the Group.

Sustainability

Case Study We have worked on a number of buildings where LEED has been explicitly achieved. These include current commissions that are seeking ratings, as well as certified projects. Macquarie Bank, Hong Kong LEED CI Gold HBO+EMTB designed Macquarie Banks Hong Kong offices in Citic Tower, and was subsequently engaged for their expansion into larger premises at IFC One. Accommodating over 1000 staff across six floors, the new environment adopts the imperatives of Macquaries corporate accommodation standards to create a healthy, technologically-enabled and flexible workplace. Culturally, the banks previous tenancy was hindered by separation across individual floors and separate lift zones, so fostering community and reinforcing a consistent Macquarie workplace experience was crucial. Feng shui considerations were accommodated from the selection of finishes and striking use of black, to the positive qi of the abstract dragon element that coils through each of the six floors. Feature screening around the utilities areas makes provision for plantlife in an aesthetically pleasing manner, and elements such as a dragonhead tortoise are placed on specificalldesigned plinths. Environmental responsibility and the demand for a healthy workplace was a significant project driver. HBO+EMTB worked closely with the projects LEED consultant, designing to achieve Gold certification under the Commercial Interiors rating tool. Sustainable initiatives include: __ energy efficient lighting including occupancy sensors in all individual rooms and perimeter sunlight sensors __ 30% of re-use of components including furniture (Lamex Furniture) and existing ceiling __ energy efficient water fittings & fixtures, whitegoods and T5 lighting __ specification of environmentally responsible finishes with sustainable supply chains, such as bamboo instead of timber and green-rated carpets (Shaw & Milliken carpets).
