UNMERCENARY - 27 JULY

St Panteleimon Unmercenary & Great Martyr

St Panteleimon was born to a pagan father - Eustorgios of Nicomedia - and a Christian mother St Eubula who named him Pantaleon, which means in all things like a lion, but later when he converted to Christianity, he changed his name to Panteleimon, which means All-merciful. He was taught about Christ our Saviour and His Holy Gospel of Salvation by St Hermolaos, the Priest who would eventually Baptise him. (Together with two other Priests - St Hermippos and St Hermocrates - St Hermolaos survived the terrifying massacre of 20,000 Christians in 303.) St Panteleimon had been educated as a Physician and held the exalted position of Physician to the Emperor and his Royal household, as well as to the noble families of his courtiers. However, St Panteleimon decided to renounce all his privileges and social status so that he could dedicate the rest of his life to the poor, the destitute and the needy. He tended to the needs of everyone who came to him, and Healed them in the Divine Name of our Lord Jesus Christ, refusing to accept any payment whatsoever. He also comforted, healed and encouraged innumerable prisoners who suffered brutal tortures most of whom were usually Christians. Reports of the compassionate, charitable and miraculously Healing Physician spread throughout the city, causing the ailing citizens to abandon their usual doctors and healers in preference to St Panteleimon. After several other Physicians laid unjust charges of sorcery and malpractice against St Panteleimon he was arrested and brought before the Emperor. St Panteleimon confessed to being a Christian and adamantly refused to renounce Christ and to offer sacrifices to the state idols. To disprove the charges of sorcery against him, St Pantelmon being confident in the True and Only Power of Almighty God - suggested that a man who had been paralysed for many years and who was well known to them all, be presented before the court to see whether he could be healed or not. First the pagan priests invoked their idols to heal the man but obviously without any success. Then to the utter astonishment and shock of all witnesses, including the Emperor, St Panteleimon, by calling on the Divine Name of our Saviour, Jesus Christ, immediately healed the paralytic. However, as soon as he recovered from the shock of the Miraculous Healing, the wicked, Emperor Maximian ordered the execution of the healed Paralytic and the torture of St Panteleimon. The Holy Hieromonks, St Hermolaos, St Hermippos and St Hermocrates were siezed as well and tried for their Faith, which they loudly and confidently confessed before the Emperor and all those present. As a result, they, too, were Perfected in Holy Martyrdom, being beheaded by sword. Throughout the many unspeakable tortures, which he endured, St Panteleimon remained steadfast in Faith and unharmed, which further enraged Maximian who ordered his beheading. The executioners tied St Panteleimon to an olive tree and when they tried to behead him while he was praying, their swords melted like soft wax, which terrified them beyond measure and made them fall to their knees in fear. At the end of St Panteleimons Prayers, the witnesses clearly heard ... a Voice from Heaven, calling the Holy Passion-Bearer by his new name and summoning him to the Heavenly Kingdom." St Panteleimon told the traumatised soldiers to rise and to complete the execution. As they followed his instruction, the olive tree became covered with fruit and although his body was cast into a fire, it remained unharmed and was secretly claimed and reverently buried by brave and devout Christians. May his memory be Eternal.
