Qatari artists who have received great acclamation for their paintings, classified as
Hurufyat, for their use of Arabic Calligraphy both as a conceptual and aesthetic artifice.

Show of Faith
10:00 am to 12:00 am
Building 18, Gallery 2
In celebration of the holy month of Ramadan, Katara Cultural
Village Foundation is proud to present a group show exhibition
of artists whose works explore notions of their faith. In keeping
with a month that promotes deeper contemplation, cleansing and
new beginnings, Show of Faith seeks to stimulate the spirit and
also to raise questions of whether being brought-up and living
either within or in close proximity to the seat of Islam, Makkah
and Medinah may affect the spiritual essence of the artists work,
whether as worshippers themselves, or as witnesses to the
millions of worshippers that flood in each year from all the around
the world. Through his series Ihramat, Ayman Yossri explores
the concept brotherhood, equality and individuality using the
context of Hajj as a metaphor for life. Young Saudi artist Basmah
Felembans Jeem stems from being in a country whose Wahhabi
Islamic traditions promote ritual and daily practice, her artwork
reveals a deeper mystical contemplation of the hidden aspects
of the religion. Ibrahim Abumsmars Blackstone is a work whose
concept is drawn from historical hadith, as a reminder of how to
apply lessons from these stories to our daily life today.
Upcoming artist Musaed Al-Huliss The Sleep of the Wicked is a
dark caution against corruption and immorality, prompting the
viewer to always heed the consequences of their actions, and
reminding one that life is ephemeral and that our deeds define our
future in the unknown hereafter.

Ibrahim Fakhroo has researched his collection for proof and

examples on how the development and improvement of Arabic
Calligraphy are intrinsically connected with the publishing and
diffusion of Quran, throughout history.

Metaphoric

Painting live performance

throughout Ramadan

Sabah Elarbilli

08:00 pm to 12:00 am
Building 19, Gallery 2
British artist Sabah Elarbilli is an elite pioneer in his chosen medium
of modern Arabic contemporary and traditional forms which are
most noted as remarkable and sometimes unconventional. Born
in Arbil, Iraq in 1977, Sabah Arbilli started his journey to become
one of the top Arabic calligraphy artists from a very young age.
Sabah`s knowledge of calligraphy deepened after starting his
engineering degree where he found the relationship between
the principals of calligraphy and engineering. This enabled him
to envisage calligraphy, the letter in a more accurate perspective
seeing the natural beauty in the form.
Katara will present 21 artworks for a new exhibition, demonstrating
for the very first time artworks produced live in a gallery by Arbilli.
He will capture the theme of Ramadan using letters and words
which unravel a message and meaning. The title thus explanatory,
metaphoric changes, when language changes, the innovation
rarely comes out of nowhere. Arbilli brings to an audience a
spectacular exhibition never seen before and works made showing
transition from present to past.

Oneness

Ceramic and mixed media installation

Shahida Ahmed

10:00 am to 12:00 am
Building 18
Shahida Ahmed is showcasing her art works for the very first time
here in Qatar. Oneness is based on the 99 names of Allah and
the 7 heavens. It looks at the faade of cubes using Kufic script
which creates a universal code to the audience. Shahida tries to
relate this with the bar code and identity of things surrounding us.
The 99 names of Allah are attributes to what we should all have
in character on the outside, but what is truly our inner self is the
unknown , just like the inside of the cube. Clay, wooden cubes
in varying sizes, heavy in form and in their monochrome glaze,
this huge installation exquisitely juxtaposes the most avant garde
modern style to illuminate an ancient and eternal effect. But in
their precise formation one is drawn through each layer of beauty
to a point of singular transcendent completeness. In the artists s
words: I continue to be inspired by simplicity and the beauty and
perfection of geometry The piece itself looks at geometrical form
and beauty through 7 layers, however resulting back to the middle
as the oneness, one God. The form of the cube also relates to
worship and the kabba.
Oneness is very simple: everything is included and allowed to
live according to its true nature. This is the secret that is being
revealed, the opportunity that is offered one universal truth and
one God. The design of the Kufic script to this piece has been
contributed by Doha based Sabah Arbilli, also exhibiting at Katara
Galleries during Ramadan 2013.

From Qurtuba to Cordoba

01 June - 01 December 2013

Infinite
Omar Khalifa

10:00 am - 10:00 pm
Building 13, Gallery 1
The city of Cordoba, declared World Heritage Site in 1994, is
known worldwide for its Arab-Islamic past. Qurtuba, previously
Roman, Byzantine and Visigoth, underwent such urban and
cultural development with the Umayyads that it became one of
the most important cities in the world. Worldwide acknowledged
monuments, such as the Mosque-Cathedral and the Madinat
alZahra Archaeological Site, bear witness to such splendour and
are outstanding examples of Arab architecture in Spain.
However, Cordoba prides itself with owning a much larger
collection of Arab-Andalusian remains spread across the city. With
the aim of rediscovering these Arab and Islamic legacies, Casa
rabe organised the participatory exhibition From Qurtuba to
Cordoba in April 2012, with the active involvement of its citizens.

13

Katara Outdoors
The idea behind it has been to reassess -through photography- the
diverse and rich Arab-Islamic heritage in the city belonging to the
period of al-Andalus.

Within the context of Qatar/ UK year of Culture 2013, Katara has

invited artist Omar Khalifa to exhibit a photographic installation
project at the Cultural Village Foundation, Katara.

The underlying inspiration, and the heart and purpose of the

work, comes from a deep interest in identity, multiculturalism, and
cosmopolitanism.

This exhibition displays a variety of ornamental details -testimony

of past splendour- which is often taken for granted by Cordobas
dwellers and visitors. The collection highlights emblematic
monuments, walls, doors, towers, minarets and baths, including
some examples of Mudjar art, a more recent architectural style
inspired by the influences of al-Andalus in the Iberian Peninsula.
After touring in Spain, the exhibition is brought to Doha thanks to
the shared efforts of Casa rabe and the Embassy of Spain in Qatar,
in cooperation with the Cultural Village Foundation KATARA.

This outdoor photography installation examines the nature of

being. Using digital multiple exposure techniques, an image is
crafted that gives us a sense of other-worldliness and depth of
perspective through the human form. This combination of man
and the elements can be seen in each image, raising questions of
identity, existence and reality. the nature of our very being. who
are we? and how are we perceived? what, in this city, does it mean
to exist?

Doha is a uniquely cosmopolitan city, with a weight of diverse

communities from across the world, all living together, performing
different and dependent functions in society, to be a part of that
society. We adopt identities and roles in transience, and we often
have little choice about it. Using a multiple-exposure technique,
Khalifa opens the door into each subjects character-driven souls,
playing with the fundamental idea of perception; of whom we
are, who we think we are, and how we are thought of. Share your
thoughts and images of the work online with #seethroughme.

the exhibition presented to visitors a valuable opportunity to

an ultimate extravaganza, rarely exposed to the public.

15 May - 23 June 2013

Eye to Eye Portraits by
Harding Meyer
Building 18, Gallery 2
The Cultural Village (Katara) organized the exhibition of the artist
Harding Meyer, which included 13 large size paintings, as the
painter has been chosen to be the supervisor of the workshop
with 14 participating artists, including 9 Qatari women. The critics
agreed that Meyers work was characterized by the exclusivity of
the personalities characters chosen by the painter as subjects for
his paintings, which clearly highlighted the language of eyes as
windows to the soul.
The work translated the reactions and interactions to be
communicated to the public, through the adoption of light and
shade, as well as the large size of the paintings, which helped to
give the characters some charm that the visitor needs to stand
long to understand its secrets. The observer of the Meyer art in
drawing faces sees the evolvement of the art pieces moving from
the direct shape to the distorted display as a part of the creative
process. Therefore Mayer worked to uncover the essence of
human nature, which made him say seeking to grab characters
from their daily data to create a new state of consciousness.
