Family Safety Day is a rousing success
By Jerry M. Gutlon
Area III Public Affairs
CAMP HUMPHREYS – A Family Safety Day developed with
children in mind was held at the Humphreys Community Activity Center
Aug. 18.
Randy Turnage, Area III safety manager, said the daylong event
was a “rousing success,” with more than 300 people in attendance.
“This is the first safety day we’ve staged specifically for the kids,”
he said. “And, of all the many safety days we’ve held, this was probably
the best one we’ve ever done.”
“We felt it was the right time to conduct a safety day for children,
with school right around the corner,” Turnage explained, “and we got
terrific support from a whole slew of great sponsors who supported
us from day one.”
Turnage said he and his staff – along with Area III Commander,
Col. Michael J. Taliento Jr. – have fielded dozens of congratulatory
telephone calls from grateful parents.
More than a dozen organizations and businesses, including DECA,
donated funds, prizes and food, in addition to the time and effort
invested. A drawing was held and 15 bicycles, valued at roughly $2,000,
were given away.
Booths were manned by representatives of the Korean Medical
