A Tribute to All Mothers

by Clydene Overbey It would be hard to explain the love of a mother. I miss Mama so much it hurts. God gives us to our parents and our moms are the main caregivers while daddies were the breadwinners. Most mothers didnt work outside the home when I was growing up. I was in high school when Mama started work in the school lunch room where I still saw her every day. It was the lunch room then not cafeteria as it is called now. A mother is someone who loves unconditionally and places the needs of her children above her own, on a personal level, and not only with words, but also actions. A mother is a person who seeing there are only three pieces of pie for four people, promptly announces she never did care for pie. Mama ate the back and wings of fried chicken and made us think thats what she wanted. A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials, heavy and sudden, fall upon us. When adversity takes the place of prosperity, when friends who rejoice with us in our sunshine desert us, when trouble thickens around us, she still will cling to us and hold us up. Mama prayed for me as long as she lived. She prayed when I had no idea she was praying, but I know her prayers of protection, when she couldnt even see me, were definitely answered. A few years before Mama died she told me how she laid in bed sometimes half the night praying for her kids. Mama loved country music, but she let me listen to rock and roll and Elvis on the old gray radio and even said she liked it. Mama played the harmonica, which we called French harp, and my how she could make it talk. She had a gallon freezer bag with all her French harps in her purse. She had several keys that she played in. When we were kids I remember her sitting down in her old tattered rocking chair and playing whenever she had some time to unwind. There were times then when I didnt want to hear it, but oh how I would love to hear it now. Some mothers are kissing mothers and some are scolding mothers, but it is love just the same, and most mothers kiss and scold together. I never knew just how much Mama loved me or what that love meant until I became a mother. I then remembered all the ornery things I did and all the worries I caused Mama. There was no way to repay all the hurt, worry and trials I caused her, not that she would have wanted me to, but there is a hole in my heart that can never be refilled now that she is gone. On the other hand a big part of me went with my son when he died. No explaining that either. Some heart-aches are never ending because a mothers love is the most powerful love under Gods love for us. Mama was famous for saying things like, When I was your age, kids had it much harder; I didnt get to go and do half the things you kids did; just because everyone else is doing it doesnt mean; I didnt have all these things you kids take for granted, I had to walk miles to school and I wanted to go; if I had sassed my mother the way you do me shed have; how many times have I told you, no means no; did you wash your ears? because I said so; and one Ive never really figured out, stop that bolixing around, you are gonna keep bolixing around, look at him/or her bolixing around. I dont have the faintest idea what bolixing around meant, but I do know it wasnt good. Mama would say, Ill swan, for a lot of things. It was kind of her form of cursing and as close as she ever got to a swear word. Mama could hear through walls and she never lost that ability. Just try and whisper clear across the house, whispers never helped. I thought she could also see and hear through walls as well as the back of her head. She seemed to read my mind as well. You just cant get away with anything with mothers. Mothers deserve all our appreciation and love. If you have your mother alive and well then you are blessed beyond all understanding. Love her, respect her, obey her, and if she is elderly visit her often. I regret not visiting Mama a lot more than I did. As important as mothers are to us it is amazing how they are taken for granted. Mothers Day shouldnt be the only time you arise and call them blessed. Love your mothers unconditionally as they love you. Jesus loved his mother greatly and provided for her even as he hung dying on the cross. John: 19-25-27: Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mothers sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, Dear woman, here is your son, and to the disciple, Here is

Shooter School held at Altus

Even though the Spring Gala was canceled the Pyrotechnic Shooter School still went on. There were over 50 participants who attended the school. We had a total of 75 people at the Altus Rural Fire Department. The participants of the class learned how to shoot fireworks. On Friday night, May 3, live shots were conducted for some of the participants. If you heard the booms, that is what it was. Saturday, May 4, starting at 8 a.m. the class began and went until dark. Liberty Pyrotechnics provided three meals for the participants. Despite on and off rain throughout the day, the participants shot live shots to prepare for the grand finale show that was held in the City of Altus around 9 p.m. The participants put on the firework show and I must say if you missed it, you missed out. The owner, Scott Wheeler, said he will be doing this again next year for our community. This is a great thing to have in our area not only for the participants who come from all over Arkansas, Missouri and Oklahoma, but for our local businesses. If you didnt get to attend this class, be sure to attend next year. We will get the word out early next year so you will have time to sign up for it. Altus Fire Department had four attend this year. We now will have four, possibly five, licensed shooters for this years firework show on July 4th which will be held in the City of Altus. Thank you to all who came out and helped with serving food and with traffic. - -Randy Kinsworthy, chief

Slimrock president speaks to Rotary

Altus Area Sunset Rotarians recently learned about the operation of Cedar Ridge Quarry near Cecil from Slimrock LLC president Jeff Byler, who was introduced by club member Thomas Post. Byler, who has a background in sales and marketing, ran the company remotely from Colorado before moving to Ozark in 2011. According to the speaker, the quarry, is located on 400 acres on Oak Bend Road, cuts and fabricates natural cleft flagstone at that location and marble from Marble City, Okla. The company sells in Canada and coast to coast in the U.S., he said, and offers raw blocks or finished stone. Slimrock currently has about 30 employees and has employed as many as 75, depending on the availability of

stone reserves, he said. All employees are cross-trained. Gary Au was chosen to receive the Rotarian of the Week medallion by the previous weeks winner, Paul Post. At last weeks meeting, Au presented the medallion to the club as a whole. Guest speaker was Linda Millsap, director of the Ozark Area Chamber of Commerce, whose program was on the Chambers new interactive website.

UAFS registration now underway

Summer registration is now open at the University of Arkansas/Fort Smith, according to Penny Pendleton of Fort Smith, dean of enrollment management. The first summer term begins June 3 with five-week and some 10-week enrollment options. The second summer term starts on July 8. In most cases, classes meet Monday through Thursday. New students may apply online at www.uafs.edu prior to visiting with an admissions officer to help them through the admissions process. Moore said that choosing to enroll for summer school now is the perfect time to gear up for college classes during the summer months. She said that, although some classes are filled because current students have already enrolled for the summer, many options still remain available. Fall registration for transfer and returning students with 13 credit hours or more has already begun. New, transfer and returning students with 12 hours or less must register for fall classes during new student orientation programs throughout the summer. The Admissions and School Relations Office is located on the second floor of the Smith-Pendergraft Campus Center. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fridays. The class schedule is available on the UAFS website under Academic Quicklinks. For more information call the admissions office at 479788-7120 or 1-888-512-5466 or visit www.uafs.e du/admissions/new-student-orientation.

From that time on, this disciple took her into his home. Who can find a virtuous woman? She is far more precious than jewels. Strength and honor are her clothing, and she can laugh at the time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom, and loving instruction is on her tongue. She watches over the activities of her household and is never idle. Her sons rise up and call her blessed. He husband also praises her: Many women are capable, but you surpass them all! Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fears the Lord will be praised. ~Proverbs 31:10, 25-30 back events, Arkansas has collected over 33 tons of unneeded medications.
