ECET 2310 (Electronics II) Laboratory Exercise 3 Single-Stage BJT Amplifier Design
[This laboratory exercise incorporates numerous BJT amplifier design concepts, including: dc biasing, transistor modeling, small-signal analysis, effects of source and load resistances, low-frequency response effects, and high-frequency response effects. The first four concepts were covered in ECET 2300 (one of the prerequisites to ECET 2310) and the last two concepts are covered in ECET 2310. Reference applicable sections of chapters 4, 5 and 9 in your textbook (Boylestad and Nashelsky, Electronic Devices and Circuit Theory) if you need assistance with this design.] Design a single-stage BJT amplifier that will meet certain design criteria. First, design on paper a circuit that will theoretically meet the stated performance goals. Second, verify the design by using PSpice. Third, build the circuit and check its performance. Fourth, if necessary, modify the design so that all criteria are satisfied. Fifth and finally, use the Computer Aided Test (CAT) system to measure a widerange of data to document your amplifiers performance.

Design Criteria:
1. Supply: 15 V 1.50 mA 2. Signal: 100 mVp-p from a 1.0 k source 3. Output: 5.0 Vp-p 10% across a 56 k load with no visible distortion 4. Frequency response: The frequency response of the amplifier must be flat ( 0.5 dB) for 100 Hz f 20 kHz. The overall lower cutoff frequency (lower half-power frequency) of the amplifier must be less than 35 Hz. The overall upper cutoff frequency (upper half-power frequency) of the amplifier must be between 50 kHz and 200 kHz. 5. Components: 5% resistors (no variable resistors or combinations) 20% capacitors (you may use one capacitor decade box for performance testing) 2N2222 transistor: typical hFE = 75 = hfe and hib = 26 mV/IC

Procedure:
Part A. Amplifier design (MUST BE DONE BEFORE LAB): 1. Using the information given in the Design Criteria, design an amplifier that meets all of the goals on paper. Substantiate all design work on paper. 2. Using PSpice verify the design by making: a. a transient plot of the signal voltage and load voltage for two periods. (Set the source voltage to a 100 mVp-p , 1 kHz sinewave in this situation) b. a plot of the overall voltage gain magnitude (in dB) versus frequency (in Hz) of the amplifier from 30 Hz to 300 kHz. Part B. Performance testing of the amplifier design: 1. Build your amplifier circuit and measure the dc parameters: IC and VCE. Measure the output ac voltages (p-p) at 35 Hz, 100 Hz, 1kHz, 20 kHz, and at 200 kHz. Modify the design until the amplifier meets ALL design criteria. Substantiate all design modifications. Be sure the circuit is working before using the Computer Aided Test (CAT) system. 2. Use the CAT system to make measurements between 30 Hz and 300 kHz. Take 250 measurements. 3. From the measured data (CAT system) determine the percent difference from the nominal design values for the output voltages at 100 Hz, 1 kHz, and 20 kHz. Determine the dB change in gain at 35 Hz, 100 Hz, 20 kHz, and at 200 kHz from the dB gain at 1 kHz. 4. The report (if required) should contain all design work and evaluation as well as the plots (CAT and PSpice) and copies of the pertinent measured data (CAT).
