ASSIGNMENT-2 Connection
1. What are the advantages of bolted connections over riveted or welded connections? 2. Explain Lap and Butt joint with sketches. 3. List the failure modes that may control the strength of a bolted joint. 4. List some advantages of welding over bolting. 5. Design a lap joint and butt joint between two plates having thickness 12 mm and 16 mm are connected by a single bolted joint with 20 mm diameter bolts at 70 mm pitch. Calculate the efficiency of the joint. Take fu of plate as 410 MPa and assume 4.6 grade bolts. 6. Two plates 10 mm and 16 mm thick are to be joined by a double cover butt joint. Assuming cover plates of 8 mm thickness, design the joint to transmit a factored load of 650 kN. Assume Fe410 and grade 4.6 bolts. 7. Design a connection of a truss joint as shown in fig.1 using M16 black bolts of property class 4.6 and grade 410 steel. 8. Find the maximum load which the bracket shown in fig.2 can transmit if five grade 4.6 bolts with a diameter of 20 mm are used and plates connected are 10 mm thick.

9. Design a connection to joint two plates of size 250x 12 mm of grade Fe410, to mobilize full plate tensile strength using shop fillet welds, if (i) a lap joint is used (ii) a double cover butt joint is used. 10. An ISA 150x75x10 mm is subjected to axial tensile force of 180 kN connected by its longer leg to 10 mm thick gusset plate. Design welded connection for shop welding. 11. A tie member of a truss consisting of an angle section ISA 65x65x6 of Fe410 grade, is welded to an 8 mm gusset plate. Design a weld to transmit a load equal to the full strength of the member. Assume shop welding. 12. A bracket plate is welded to the flange of a column ISHB 300 as shown in fig. 3. Calculate the size of the weld required to support a factored load of 150 kN.

ASSIGNMENT-3 Tension member


1. List the different modes of failure of tension member. 2. Explain block shear failure in plates and angles. 3. Find tension carrying capacity of single angle ISA 100 x100 x 8 mm connected to an 8 mm thick gusset by means of three bolts of 20 mm diameter at pitch of 80 mm c/c in one line, if the yield and the ultimate stress of the steel used are 250 MPa and 410 MPa, respectively. 4. Design a suitable angle section to carry tensile force of 280 kN. Use bolted connection. 5. Select a suitable angle section to carry a factored tensile force of 180 kN assuming welded end connection. Assume design strength as fy =250 MPa. 6. Design a tie member of roof truss subjected to working loads of 80 kN(DL) and 120 kN(LL). Use double angle section connected back o back on either side of gusset 8 mm thick. Use bolted connection. Fy=250MPa and fu = 410 MPa for both member and bolt material. What will be the capacity if the angles are connected on the same side of the gusset plate. 7. A diagonal member of a roof carries an axial tension of 500 kN. Design the section and its connection with a gusset plate and lug angle. Use fy =250 MPa and fu =410 MPa

Assignment-4 Compression member


1. Explain different end conditions of columns with their effective length. 2. What is difference in behavior of short and long compression members ? 3. Determine the compressive strength of a single angle strut ISA 90 x 60 x 8 mm with centre to centre length of 2.5 m. The angle is loaded through one leg and ends are fixed. Consider 1 bolt at each end. 4. Calculate compressive strength of 2 ISA 80 x 80 x 8 mm placed on either side of gusset plate 8 mm thick with effective held in position at both ends but restrained against rotation at one end. The length of member is 3 m and fy is 250 MPa.

5. Determine the design axial compressive load on the column section ISMB 400 @ 61.6 kg/m having length 4.5 m between the intersections and pinned at the ends. Take fy is 250 MPa. 6. Design a double angle section to act as a compression member in a truss having 3.5 m length and to carry a factored load of 180 kN. (a) Connected back to back to both side of gusset plate (b) Connected back to back to one side of gusset plate 7. Design a suitable section for a column 3.5 m long which is effectively held in position and restrained against rotation at one ends, in order to carry a factored load of 400 kN. 8. Design a built up column with two channels toe-to-toe to carry a factored load of 1800 kN. Take the effective length as 5.2 m. (a) Design it as a laced column and also design the lacing. (b) Design it as a battened column and also design the battens. Design a base plate for a column of ISHB 300 carrying a factored load of 680 kN. Assume that the column is supported on a concrete of grade M25.
