Tile Fixing and Grouting Techniques

Tile Fixing Techniques

The adhesive is applied to the prepared surface with a trowel and then combed through with a suitably sized notched trowel in straight ribs to give a ribbed mortar bed. The tiles should be fixed within the open time of the applied adhesive and pressed into place with a twisting and sliding action to achieve the required contact. For tiling to walls in dry internal locations the adhesive contact should be at least 50% of the back of the tile. When tiling to floors and all external locations, or in wet areas such as showers and swimming pools, solid bed fixing should be achieved. To achieve a solid bed usually requires the tiles to be buttered immediately prior to placing into the ribbed bed so no voids are left beneath the tiles.

When fixing floor tiles, a pourable adhesive can be used if preferred to enable solid bedding of the tiles without the need to butter the backs of the tiles. For Natural Stone fixing - see page 9.

The size of notched trowel chosen depends on the tile size, the surface being tiled, the profile on the back of the tile and the degree of coverage required.

Tile Grouting Technique with Cement-Based Grout

Using a rubber squeegee work the cement-based mortar into the tile joints ensuring they are completely filled, deep joints can usually be filled in one operation without the grout sagging in the joints. When the mortar firms up in the joints this allows for washing down to produce a virtually flush finish, with a smooth surface by using just a wet sponge.

If an area is left with dried residue on the tile face prior to cleaning, the grout residues may, within the working time of the grout mortar, require moistening in order to make washing off easier.

Any dry film remaining on the tile face after cleaning down can be easily removed by using a damp sponge once the mortar has hardened in the joints.

Tile Fixing and Grouting Techniques

Tile Grouting Technique with ARDEX WA EpoxyBased Grout

1. First, ensure that you are ready with the correct tools and sufficient materials. Ensure that you have protective gloves, ample fresh water and have read the precautions on the containers. Add the complete contents of the hardener container into the container of resin. Mix the resin and hardener together then transfer some of the mix back to the hardener container to disperse any hardener not transferred initially. Transfer this material back to the resin container then thoroughly mix the hardener and resin together until a uniform mortar is produced. Mixing should be carried out using a propeller type stirrer with a slow speed drill which will make mixing easier and faster. When mixed, the mortar should be removed from the container and spread out onto the wall or floor tiles or an impervious surface e.g. metal plate, to ensure the maximum working time of the mortar by preventing self-heating in the container. 2. Work the mortar into the dry joints immediately after mixing, using a suitable rubber backed squeegee, ensuring that the joints are completely filled. N.B. Some porous and matt finished tiles are prone to surface absorption of epoxy resin. To avoid shading variations apply the mortar over the entire tile surface. 3. The use of a good rubber backed trowel/squeegee removes virtually all surplus material from the surface of the tiles and will make cleaning easier.

4. Mist spray water onto the wall tile surface prior to emulsifying the grout residues.

Step 1

5. Cleaning the residues from the surface of the tiles should proceed as soon after application as possible. Use a Scotchbrite pad and a little water, working in circular movements to emulsify the residues on the tile surface whilst applying gentle pressure. Blue pads should be used for cleaning ARDEX WA grey and white pads for ARDEX WA white. N.B. If the Scotchbrite pad is pressed too hard onto the tiled surface, more mortar will be removed from the joints. Take care to ensure that empty joints are kept dry and not accidentally filled with emulsified material. 6. Smooth the joint surface by gently wiping along the joint surface with a moist sponge to obtain a satisfactory finish. Carefully remove the emulsified material from the surface of the tiles with a squeezed out sponge, wiping with each face once before rinsing again in clear water. Water should be changed on a regular basis. A square cut sponge wiped diagonally across the surface of the tiles will leave the joints as flush as possible. Slowly wipe across to allow the sponge time to absorb the slurry as it passes over the tiled surface. 7. Note: Once the cleaning has been completed, the joints should be allowed to harden sufficiently before a final clean down to remove any residual film which may remain after wiping with a sponge. The use of a Scotchbrite pad and water will remove this film, this final cleaning should be carried out within 24 hours of application.

Movement Joints

Movement Joints
The incorporation of movement joints is an important part of a ceramic floor or wall tiling project and should be detailed at the commencement of work. Movement joints are incorporated to accommodate moisture or thermal movement and drying shrinkage of the background or substrate to be tiled. Detailed advice is given in the relevant sections of BS 5385 parts 1, 2 and 3, extracts of which are given here.

Note: Stresses occur in the tiled installation as a result of movement due to such factors as drying shrinkage and moisture, thermal changes and creep. These stresses can cause loss of adhesion, bulging or cracking of the tiling but they can be localised by incorporating movement joints. 10.2 Location Movement joints should be located in the tiled installation to coincide and be continuous with all existing structural movement joints, although they are isolated by suitable thicknesses of back-up material. Where tiles are fixed to an intermediate substrate, the movement joint should extend through the intermediate substrate. Where backgrounds are mature and stable, the movement joints in the tiling, which are not to be confused with structural movement joints, should extend only through the tiling and its bed, and should be a minimum of 6mm wide. 10.3 Disposition and Forming When detailing the disposition of movement joints, the designer should consider the following locations in relation to their effect on the setting out of the tiling: a) Over existing and/or structural movement joints; b) Where tiling abuts other materials; c) Junctions between different background materials, where tiling is continuous across them; d) Storey heights horizontally and approximately 3m to 4.5m apart vertically; ideally, they should be located over movement joints in the structural background and at structural material changes; for example, horizontal joint at top and bottom of floor slab, vertical joint at internal corners and at junctions with columns; e) External angles, vertically between 0.25m and 1m from the angle and symmetrically wherever possible. Where movement joints in tiling occur over movement joints in the background, they should coincide and be continuous with these joints and should be of a suitable width to permit the sealant to accommodate the expected movement.

6.8.1.3 Other movement joints Flexible joints should be inserted over supporting walls and beams at intermediate positions to accommodate deflection of the base and movements in the flooring. Flexible joints should be used at floor perimeters and to divide the floor into bays at the intervals recommended in 7.1.6.4. Wherever possible they should coincide with structural features, e.g. columns and door openings, or they can be planned to provide a decorative panelled effect. Where high temperatures are expected, for instance around boilers, over heating installations or from strong sunlight, an assessment of the likely temperature range and corresponding linear changes in the flooring should be made to determine whether and where any additional allowance for movement is necessary. In floors that have to withstand hard-rimmed wheel traffic or the dragging of heavy loads, the position of movement joints should, where possible, be planned so that they do not occur in the traffic area. Where this is not practicable the joints should be of types having their edges reinforced with metal or rigid plastic sections. Joints other than those protected by metal or rigid plastics edging, subject to traffic heavier than light pedestrian, should not be wider than 10mm. Information on the permissible maximum and minimum joint widths should be obtained from the manufacturer of the particular joint filling selected.

Internal Wall Tiling BS 5385-1 : 2009 6.5 Movement Joints

6.5.1 General Consideration should be given at the design stage to the provision of movement joints; the type and location of movement joints involve considerations of construction materials, bedding systems, anticipated temperature and humidity conditions, areas concerned and the setting out of the tiling. Note: Stresses occur in the tiled installation as a result of background movement due to such factors as drying shrinkage and moisture and thermal changes. These stresses can sometimes cause loss of adhesion, bulging or cracking of the tiling, but can be localised by incorporating movement joints. Where the background is mature and stable, e.g. existing rendering or plaster, the movement joints in the tiling, which are not to be confused with structural movement joints, might need to extend only through the tiling and its bed, and should be a minimum of 6mm wide. Materials for movement joints should conform to 5.9. 6.5.2 Location Movement joints should be located in the tiled installation to coincide and be continuous with all existing structural movement joints, although they are actually formed as separate joints isolated by suitable thicknesses of back-up material. The movement joints should be able to accommodate expected movement and when detailing the location of movement joints in tiling, the designer normally specifies that they are positioned in the following locations. a) Over existing and/or structural movement joints; b) Where tiling abuts other materials; c) Where tiling is continuous across junctions of different background materials; d) In large tiled areas, at internal vertical corners and at 3m to 4.5m centres horizontally and vertically; e) Where stresses are likely to be concentrated, for example at changes of alignment. Where large degrees of thermal movement or vibration are expected, the frequency of movement joints should be increased to accommodate the movement. Movement joints in the tiling should be of a suitable width to permit the sealant to accommodate the expected structural movement. Conversely, in small tiled areas in normal conditions, intermediate joints should not be necessary on walls up to 6m long provided the background is strong and dimensionally stable, there is adequate compressible joint width around each tile and movement joints are included at internal angles.

7.1.6 Movement joints

7.1.6.1 General Care should be taken to ensure that levelling screeds or tile beds adjacent to movement joints are fully compacted. Movement joint cavities should extend through the tiling, tile bed and levelling screed and should be completely filled and sealed after the grouting of the normal joints. Where separating layers are incorporated, however, the movement joint should extend to this layer but should not penetrate it. Prior to the filling and sealing operation, the joints should be thoroughly cleaned of all extraneous matter, excess grout, dust, etc. 7.1.6.2 Structural movement joints Movement joints should be inserted in the bed and tiles over movement joints and/or contraction joints in the base. They should be continuous with the base joints and should be of sufficient width to permit the joint filling to accommodate the expected movement. In the event of the base joints not being true, e.g. not straight and parallel, or their layout not coinciding with that of the tiles, the siting of the movement joints in the finish as stated might not be acceptable and a decision as to any alternative procedure should be obtained from the building designer or engineer or their agent. 7.1.6.3 Perimeter joints Movement joints should be inserted where the tiling abuts restraining surfaces such as perimeter walls, columns, curbs, steps and plant fixed to the base. In floors with dimensions of 2m or less between restraining surfaces, perimeter joints are not necessary unless the conditions that can generate stresses are likely to be extreme, for example, violent temperature changes or prolonged immersion in liquid. 7.1.6.4 Intermediate joints The need for intermediate joints between perimeter joints depends on the dimensions of the floor; for example, with the exception of those on suspended construction, in floors with less than 10m between perimeter joints no intermediate joints are necessary but in larger floors should be employed to divide the area into bays of size not greater than 10m x 10m. On suspended floors, stress-relieving joints should be inserted where flexing is likely to occur, e.g. over supporting walls or beams. For floors which might be subjected to significant thermal changes, i.e. direct sunlight in atria, or underfloor heating, etc., the floor area should be divided up by movement joints into bays of size not greater than 40m2 with an edge length not greater than 8m.

Interior and Exterior Floor Tiling BS 5385-3 : 2007 6.8 Movement Joints
6.8.1 Types of movement joints 6.8.1.1 General Stresses can result from factors such as drying shrinkage, deflection and moisture movements in the base and thermal and moisture changes affecting the flooring. These stresses can sometimes cause loss of adhesion and bulging or cracking of the flooring. To counteract this, movement joints extending through the tiling and its bed should be incorporated in the installation. The building designer should assess the magnitude of any stresses and decide where movement joints should be located, having regard to all the relevant factors including the type of flooring and bed. Movement joints for the floor tiling are as follows: a) Flexible joints aligned to structural movement joints; b) Flexible joints to accommodate smaller movements than structural joints. Note: For movement joints in special conditions refer to BS 5385-4. 6.8.1.2 Structural movement joints Structural movement joints in the bed and tiling should be sited immediately over and be continuous with structural movement joints in the base. This procedure might not be acceptable if the base joints are not straight and parallel, or if their layout does not coincide with that of the floor tiles; in these circumstances, guidance should be sought from the building designer or engineer.

External Wall Tiling BS 5385-2 : 2006 10 Movement Joints

10.1 General Consideration should be given at the design stage to the provision of movement joints. The type and location of movement joints are influenced by considerations of construction, materials, bedding systems, anticipated temperature and humidity conditions, areas involved and the setting out of the tiling. Sealants and back-up materials for movement joints should be in accordance with 5.9.

Floor Tiling - Background/Substrate Preparation

Internal Floors
CEMENT/SAND SCREED
New cement and sand screeds require at least 3 weeks drying time prior to fixing tiles.*

Background/Substrate Preparation
All backgrounds must be rigid, clean, stable and free from any barriers to adhesion such as dust, plaster droppings, grease, polish and any water softenable or loosely adhered materials. Good adhesion to a stable background is very important to guarantee the successful application of tiling. Surfaces to be tiled must be flat and when checked with a 2m straight edge, any gap under the straight edge between points of contact with the surface should not exceed 3mm (Surface Regularity 1). Any small scale irregularities should be pre-smoothed before tiling. * With an unbonded ARDEX A 35 cement/sand screed tiles can be fixed after only 24 hours, with a bonded ARDEX EB 2 cement/sand screed tiles can be fixed after only 3 hours. If thinner layers need to be made up, consideration should be given to the use of the appropriate ARDEX smoothing compound.

ANHYDRITE SCREED

Ensure that the surface has been prepared in accordance with the manufacturers instructions and is free of dust, is hard and the anhydrite screed is fully dry. Use ARDEX P 51 primer diluted 1:3 by volume with water.

HARD FLOORING GRADE ASPHALT SANDED

With well adhered sand key no primer is required. If sand key is poor or worn off, proceed as for smooth asphalt.

HARD FLOORING GRADE ASPHALT SMOOTH

Use ARDEX P 82 primer.

EXISTING CERAMIC TILING

Ensure existing tiling is well adhered. Thorough cleaning and rinsing off essential.

Primers
ARDEX P 4 - Solvent free primer for internal/external application to walls, floors and ceilings. Used prior to the application of ARDEX ceramic tile adhesives and levelling compounds. Produces textured surface and dries in one hour. Virtually drip free. Paricularly useful for tile on tile applications. Applied to concrete, cement/sand screeds, ceramic tiles, terrazzo.

TERRAZZO
Ensure existing terrazzo is well adhered. Thorough cleaning and rinsing off essential; mechanical preparation may be required.

CONCRETE
Ensure that new concrete is at least 6 weeks old prior to tiling. Check that surface curing agents are removed.

WET LOCATIONS

Backgrounds should be water resistant and suitable for direct fixing. Tiles should be solid bed fixed.

ARDEX P 51 - For use with ARDEX X 7001. Also for use on porous and absorbent anhydrite screeds.

TIMBER FLOORS
Use undiluted ARDEX P 51 only with ARDEX X 7001/ARDEX X 7001 W. Use ARDEX P82 or ARDEX P 51 with ARDEX S16/ARDEX E90. ARDEX P 82 - Non-flammable, water dispersed epoxy primer for bonding to smooth impervious surfaces including existing ceramic tiling, internal asphalt, terrazzo, sound and well adhered paint coatings and old adhesive residues, prior to the use of cement-based adhesives.

External Floors
CEMENT/SAND RENDER AND SCREED
Wood float finish and prevent rapid drying out. Allow to air dry for at least 2 weeks (renders) or at least 3 weeks (screeds) prior to tiling.*

1 2 3

Bed thickness maximum 3mm unless using ARDEX S 20. Adhesive bed thickness not greater than 6mm.

CONCRETE
Allow at least 6 weeks drying time prior to fixing tiles onto new concrete. Ensure all formwork release agents are removed.

EXISTING CERAMIC TILING

Ensure existing tiling is well adhered and can support the new tile bed. Thorough cleaning and rinsing off essential.

ARDEX WPC can be used to protect moisture sensitive backgrounds in wet locations, prior to fixing tiles using the appropriate ARDEX cement-based adhesive.

BRICKWORK
Allow new walls to dry for at least 6 weeks prior to direct fixing or rendering.

Wall Tiling - Background/Substrate Preparation

Internal Walls
CONCRETE
Allow at least 6 weeks drying time prior to fixing new tiles onto new concrete. Ensure mould oil and curing agents are removed.

External Walls
CEMENT/SAND RENDER AND SCREED
Wood float finish and prevent rapid drying out. Allow to air dry for at least 2 weeks (renders) or at least 3 weeks (screeds) prior to tiling.*

CEMENT/SAND RENDER
Wood float finish and prevent rapid drying of the surface for 1 to 2 days. Allow to air dry for at least two weeks prior to tiling.*

CONCRETE
Allow at least 6 weeks drying time prior to fixing tiles onto new concrete. Ensure all formwork release agents are removed.

GYPSUM PLASTER

EXISTING CERAMIC TILING

1 3

Do not use in wet or damp conditions, must be dry and at least 4 weeks old. Brush down surface prior to tiling. Where required use ARDEX P 51 primer.

Ensure existing tiling is well adhered and can support the new tile bed. Thorough cleaning and rinsing off essential.

BRICKWORK
Allow new walls to dry for at least 6 weeks prior to direct fixing or rendering.

PLASTERBOARD

Ensure boards are rigidly braced and adequately supported; fix directly to the paper facing. Do not skim with plaster.

* With ARDEX AM 100 Rapid Hardening One Coat Tiling Render tiles can be fixed only 2 hours after application. For tiling in dry locations the adhesive coverage should be at least 50%. For tiling in wet locations solid bed fixing is required (No voids behind tiles).

AERATED CONCRETE

Allow at least 6 weeks drying time for new walls before tiling or rendering. Render should not exceed 13mm in thickness.

EXISTING CERAMIC TILING

Ensure existing tiling is well adhered and can support the new tile bed. Thorough cleaning and rinsing off essential. In dry locations where required use ARDEX P 82 / ARDEX P 4 primer.

WOOD-BASED BOARDS

Avoid if possible, refer to BS 5385:Part 1. If installed, the boards must be dry and conditioned to the correct moisture content and their backs and edges suitably sealed prior to being rigidly fixed. Where required use ARDEX P 82 primer.

COMPOSITE BOARDS

Check with manufacturer for guidance on dimensional stability. Priming or surface preparation may be required.

Primers
ARDEX P 4 - Solvent free primer for internal/external application to walls, floors and ceilings. Used prior to the application of ARDEX ceramic tile adhesives and levelling compounds. Produces textured surface and dries in one hour. Applied to concrete, cement/sand screeds, ceramic tiles, terrazzo. ARDEX P 51 - For use on plaster before fixing with ARDEX or ARDEX-FLEX cement-based adhesives. ARDEX P 82 - Non-flammable, water dispersed epoxy primer for bonding to wood-based surfaces and existing ceramic tiling prior to the use of cement-based adhesives.
1 2 3 4

BRICKWORK
Allow new walls to dry for at least 6 weeks prior to direct fixing or rendering.

CONCRETE BLOCKWORK
New walls should be built with dry blocks. Allow 6 weeks drying time before direct fixing or rendering.

WET LOCATIONS

Backgrounds should be water-resistant and suitable for direct fixing. Tiles should be solid bed fixed.

Maximum weight of tiling per square metre is 20kg. Maximum weight of tiling per square metre is 32kg. Bed thickness maximum 3mm.

ARDEX WPC Flexible Rapid Drying and Setting Waterproof Coating Can be used to protect moisture sensitive backgrounds in 49 domestic/commercial wet locations, prior to fixing tiles using ARDEX D30 or the appropriate ARDEX cement-based adhesive.

COVERAGE This will depend upon tile size, joint width, depth and the Grout Coverage Figure (G.C.F.). Use the following to estimate the approximate grout requirements for square or rectangular tiles (all dimensions in mm): Stage 1. ADD length and breadth of tile together. 2. MULTIPLY result by joint width. 3. MULTIPLY result by joint depth. 4. MULTIPLY result by the Grout Coverage Figure (G.C.F). 5. DIVIDE result by length of tile. 6. DIVIDE result by breadth of tile. The result is the material requirement in kg per sq metre.

SUMMARY Material required is:(length + breadth) x width x depth length x breadth EXAMPLE Using ARDEX-FLEX FL Tiles 300mm x 300mm x 10mm; joints of 10mm:(300 + 300) x 10 x 10 x 1.75 = 1.16kg/m2 300 x 300 Thus one 10kg bag of ARDEX-FLEX FL will grout up to 8.6m2 of tiling. x G.C.F. = kg/m2

Quick and easy grout coverage can be calculated using the cement and epoxy based grout calculator at ARDEX online: www.ardex.co.uk/calculator.asp
