Initial Observation: SBI is one of the largest banks on Earth in terms of branches, accounts, and other metrics. The bank is majority-owned by the Indian government. The bank undertook many computerization initiatives to be up to date with the latest technological advancements. In 1991 it installed total branch automation using Kindle (now Misys) Bankmaster to be

deployed in the largest branches. State Bank of India computerized all its branches by January 2004, rolling out Bankmaster in 7,526 additional branches in nine months. State Bank of India was initially running a branch system and when it found that as a competitive disadvantage it changed to a single centralized core banking system in India so that customers could do business with any branch. It introduced FNS BANCS architecture in collaboration with TCS and HP. TCS and HP then conducted another scalability test in September 2006 to determine if the system could process SBI's entire base of 100 million accounts with sustained peak online throughput of 1,500 transactions per second. Faced with deregulation, privatization and globalization, the Indian banks are slowly looking at various options to stay ahead in the steady race. So SBI also to keep up with the competition has been introducing new technologies to its IT system. SBI has recently launched various cost-effective channels, such as SBI Tiny Card (biometrically enabled card), kiosk banking (internet enabled kiosk/computer with biometric validation) and cell phone messaging channel (secured transactions on low-cost mobile phone) Today most of the banks have their own in-house IT department which not only takes care of deployment and implementation issues but is also into developing specific and customized applications for the bank. Every bank is expanding its IT division and making huge investments to develop the division as a profit center by itself. SBI provides Personal Banking Corporate Banking and various other services.
