How to prep your yard
for summer parties
Backyard soirees are a staple of summer for many
families. Whether hosting a family reunion, a
gathering of friends or a mix of both, such
gatherings can be a great time to reconnect with
your loved ones in a relaxing and natural setting.
Hosting such gatherings might not require as much
work as organizing a more formal get-together, but
that doesnt mean summer soirees dont require a
little work in advance of the guests arrival. Thats
especially true if you plan to host the party outdoors
in your yard, which will need a little TLC before
guests arrive. The following are a few tips to get your
yard ready before your next summer soiree.
* Cut the grass and clear your walkways. Cutting the
grass before guests arrive might seem like common
sense, but try to do so a couple of days before the
party. This gives you an extra day or so to clear the
walkways of grass clippings, and it saves you the
trouble of cutting the grass on the day of the party
when youre likely to have more pressing tasks to
take care of.
* Decorate your yard. Decorations are a staple of
parties held indoors, so why not decorate your
homes exterior when hosting a get-together in the
backyard? Use freshly cut flowers from your own
garden as centerpieces on your patio furniture, or
purchase flowers of various colors from your local
florist to add a dash or two of color to the festivities.
* Clear the yard of toys. Before guests arrive, clear
the yard of the kids toys, putting them away so
guests dont injure themselves by stepping on errant
action figures or skateboards left hidden in the grass.
* Trim trees and shrubs around walkways. While a
backyard barbecue is less formal than a party held
indoors, you still want your home to be as
accommodating as possible for your guests.

MARTINSBURG - Those engines you
hear revving might be the sound of Bike
Night organizers getting ready for the big
event.
This year, Bike Night, which features a
benefit ride throughout the region by
hundreds of area motorcycle enthusiasts, is
set for the evening of Saturday, Aug. 24 in
downtown Martinsburg. Bike Night is
hosted by the Blue Knights, a law
enforcement motorcycle club formed in
2001. The club, comprised of active and
retired law enforcement officers, has more
than 50 members.
Its an event that draws riders as well as
eager onlookers, all of whom line Queen
Street as the bikers make their way from
the countryside to downtown. Once the
ride concludes, bikers park their
motorcycles along the main thoroughfare
of downtown, allowing non-riders to
catch a glimpse at some of the most
beautiful motorcycles in the area. As the
crowd ogles the bikes, riders make their
way through vendors to hear the sounds
of live music.
It really is quite a sight to behold, said
KC Bohrer, president of the Blue Knights,
who has helped organize the event for
many years. The bikes are beautiful, the
crowds are well-behaved and its a win-
win for the City, as well as the non-profits
we support. This year we are happy to
have three great bands for those attending
to enjoy as well as our first annual
Baddest Bike Contest.
The Blue Knights partner with Main
Street Martinsburg to host the event in
downtown Martinsburg.
Since 2004, the Blue Knights have
shared nearly $100,000 in proceeds from
the event with Hospice of the Panhandle
and other local charities. The Knights also
assist ill and distressed police officers and
their families.
We have enjoyed a wonderful
relationship with the Blue Knights for
nearly 10 years, said Hospice CEO
Margaret Cogswell. They are terrific
supporters of Hospice and we are so
grateful for their ongoing commitment to
our organization.

RANSON, W.Va. - On the 1 7th of
August every year, to raise awareness of the
benefits of breastfeeding and the need for
global support, the World Alliance for
Breastfeeding Action organises World
Breastfeeding Week. World Breastfeeding
Week is celebrated in 120 countries and
marks the signing of the WHO/UNICEF
document Innocenti Declaration, which
lists the benefits of breastfeeding, plus
global and governmental goals.
To mark this occasion, thousands of
breastfeeding women and their babies/
children across the world will gather in
their own communities on August 2 and 3
to take part in the Big Latch On, a
synchronized breastfeeding event in
multiple locations.
University Healthcare Jefferson Medical
Center will hold its 3rd annual Big Latch
On event on Saturday, August 3 at 10:30
am. The event will be held in the medical
centers first floor conference room, and all
area women who are breastfeeding their
babies/children are invited to attend.
Tours of Jefferson Medical Centers
obstetrics unit will be offered following the
Big Latch On.
The first Big Latch On took place in
Aotearoa New Zealand in 2005 and was
introduced to Portland, Oregon in 2010
by Joanne Edwards. It has now taken off
globally and in 2012, 8862 children were
counted breastfeeding as part of the
Global Big Latch On.
The Big Latch On provides the
opportunity for breastfeeding women to
get together in their local communities,
host their own events, and identify
opportunities for on-going support.
Breastfeeding contributes to the normal
growth and development of babies/
children. The World Health Organization
recommends breastfeeding exclusively for
the first six months of a babys life to
optimize these benefits.

Girls Club of the Eastern Panhandle will
host its 2013 Elimination Dinner and
Silent Auction fund raiser on Saturday,
July 27 at St. Josephs Parish School in
Martinsburg.
The evening will begin at 5:30 with
dinner at 6:30 pm. Sponsorships are
available as well as tickets to the dinner.
Tickets are $50 per couple, including
dinner and drinks. A silent auction will
also be held throughout the evening. The
