DEPARTURE DAY

about the erdman residence

Many of our research fellows are staying at the grand Erdman residence. The Erdman residence was one of the earlier compounds of the post mining era having been built in the late 1970s by Jerry Wexler of Chicago real-estate fame and Susan Hannah. The residence included a pool house, a tennis court with a bubble, the Rocket Ranch (the caretakers house), and the Big House, built for parties. After Jerrys death in the early 1990s, it was divided up and sold off separately. It is rumored that the Yamaha grand piano was played by Jackson Browne, along with Sting and others of the time who enjoyed the entertainment and hospitality of the residence.

If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other.

Our human compassion binds us the one to the other - not in pity or patronizingly, but as human beings who have learnt how to turn our common suffering into hope for the future.
-Nelson Mandela

14

faculty

A human being is part of a whole called by us universe, a part limited in tie and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest, a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restriting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.
- Albert Einstein

15

I can do no other than to have compassion for all that is called life. That is the beginning and the foundation of all ethics.

We are each made for goodness, love and compassion. Our lives are transformed as much as the world is when we live with these truths.

The individual is capable of both great compassion and great indifference. He has it within his means to nourish the former and outgrow the latter.

The whole idea of compassion is based on a keen awareness of the interdependence of all these living beings, which are all part of one another, and all involved in one another.

Erdman Energy encourages practical, achievable methods for reducing mankind's carbon footprint. From biofuels (Virent Energy) to photovoltaics & solar thermal production and storage to heliostats and electric vehicles, the goal is to demonstrate how to use and produce energy with more compassion for the earth and all its inhabitants.

TELLURIDE INSTITUTE

The Telluride Institute is an innovative non-profit organization that fosters the transition to a sustainable world. We do this by working with commuities, businesses, and the public sector to create and advance real solutions which support the health of environments, cultures, and economies. We collaborate with leading artists, scientists, and educators to map a progressive future. Since its founding 26 years ago, the Telluride Institute has raised some $4 million towards its charitable goals, millions more in volunteer time, and has played a significant role in giving Telluride some serious cultural and educational identity during the period when the shape of the maturing resort was in flux.

The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.
